The UN, Palestine and Iraq
Ibrahim Ebeid, Al-Moharer
Kofi Annan, The Secretary General of The United Nations Organization,
declared that the US led war against Iraq was illegal. He told the British
Broadcasting Corp. radio that the US - led invasion did not conform to the
United Nations Charter. His comments do not represent any change of heart
in his position nor they introduce a genuine change in the attitude of the
United Nations Organization (...) In spite of not having a Security Council
Resolution "legalizing" this war, the United! Nations, through its Security
Council, recognized the US war against Iraq and cooperated and still
cooperating with its programs and agenda...

U.S. Plans Year-End Drive to Take Iraqi Rebel Areas
DEXTER FILKINS, NYTimes
Faced with a growing insurgency and a January deadline for national
elections, American commanders in Iraq say they are preparing operations to
open up rebel-held areas, especially Falluja, the restive city west of
Baghdad now under control of insurgents and Islamist groups (...) "We need
to make a decision on when the cancer of Falluja is going to be cut out,"
the American commander said. "We would like to end December at local co!
ntrol across the country"...

Saddam's lawyers doubt trial soon
UPI
Defense lawyers representing former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein said
Sunday they doubt Iraqi official claims that his trial will soon start.
Jordanian defense lawyer Mohammad Najib al-Rashdan told United Press
International statements by Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi stating
Saddam's trial will begin next month are unlikely to materialize.
Al-Rashdan, one of 24 lawyers defending the former Iraqi president, said
problems have begun to arise in the Iraqi court that is set to hear the
trial...

Blair told Bush he 'would not budge' in support for war. Leaked documents
show a gulf between public statements on Iraq and private talks with the
White House. Francis Elliott reports
Independent
Tony Blair privately promised George Bush he would not budge in his support
for "regime change" in Iraq more than a year before the invasion. The Prime
Minister was also told by an adviser he would have to "wrongfoot" Saddam
Hussein into providing an excuse to go to war, and that Mr Bush had no
answer to the question of "what happens the mornin! g after". An
extraordinary cache of leaked documents this weekend forced Mr Blair to
deny that the planning for post-invasion Iraq had been inadequate. Amid a
deteriorating security situation in the country, Mr Blair blamed terrorists
for trying to stop the creation of a stable and democratic Iraq. But the
leak also lays bare the gulf between what Mr Blair and his aides said in
public about Iraq and their private discussions with the White House. On
the eve of Mr Blair's visit to Mr Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, in March
2002, for example, Mr Blair's official spokesman dismissed suggestions that
he was going for a "council of war"...

Britain to cut troop levels in Iraq
Jason Burke, chief reporter, The Guardian
The British Army is to start pulling troops out of Iraq next month despite
the deteriorating security situation in much of the country, The Observer
has learnt. The main British combat force in Iraq, about 5,000-strong, will
be reduced by around a third by the end of October during a routine
rotation of units...

US air strike targets Falluja
Aljazeera.net
A US air strike has killed four people and left five wounded in Falluja,
hospital sources say, while a large offensive against the city is being
planned, a US newspaper reports. The US military said a strike was carried
out at 1830 GMT on a checkpoint in northern Falluja. "Four people were
killed and five wounded," said Dr Ali Hiad Mashalani at Falluja General
hospital...

UK ministers 'kept in dark' over abuses at Abu Ghraib
Severin Carrell and Andrew Buncombe
A senior British intelligence officer knew in January this year that Iraqi
prisoners at Abu Ghraib were allegedly being abused but failed to tell his
superiors, The Independent on Sunday can reveal. Colonel Chris Terrington,
one of the highest-ranking British military intelligence experts posted to
Iraq, was told there was "one or more" secret inquiries into alleged abuses
at the infamous prison - four months before Tony Blair and Geoff Hoon, the
S! ecretary of State for Defence, were informed...

We're back at war in Iraq, says general
Sean Rayment
Gen Sir Mike Jackson, the head of the Army, has admitted that British
troops in Iraq are "back at war". He is the first authoritative figure to
concede that war is still being waged in Iraq, 16 months after President
George W Bush declared that combat operations were over...

Eclipsed in Iraq
William Greider, The Nation
...The United States is "losing" in Iraq, literally losing territory and
population to the other side. Careful readers of the leading newspapers may
know this, but I doubt most voters do. How could they, given the martial
self-congratulations of the President and relative restraint from his
opponent? High-minded pundits tell us not to dwell on the long-ago past.
But the cruel irony of 2004 is that Vietnam is the story. The arrogance and
deceit - the utter waste of human life, ours and theirs ! - play before us
once again...

TvNewsLIES.org Editor's Offer to George Bush & PNAC: I'll Pay for Your
Vacation in Iraq or Afghanistan!
TvNewsLIES.org
Mr. Bush,

I have heard you, your administration, members of Congress and your PR firm
known as the American news media, repeat over and over how much better off
the world is with Saddam Hussein deposed. I have however, yet to hear any
detailed explanation or see any evidence that validates this claim. Prior
to your decision to obliterate a sovereign nation and deliver the
equivalent of 10 September 11th events to the people of Iraq, the people if
Iraq were not afraid to walk the streets, go to work or send their children
to school. Your actions, which have resulted in the murder of thousands
more civilians than all the terrorists in history combined have been
capable, has made life in Iraq a living hell...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 17 September 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial
...American F-16 and F-18 fighter bombers as well as Apache helicopters
carried out continuous and hysterical bombing from 3:30am until 5:00am
local time Friday morning of the Ridwaniyat Zawbi` area in the village of
Zaydan, 20km south of al-Fallujah. The area is home to members of the
Zawbi` tribe. The local correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that
the American aircraft dumped more than 14! massive anti-personnel container
bombs as well as napalm on the rural community. Each container bomb
consists of about 2,000 bomblets that blast apart near the ground to kill
any and all living things...

The acid test of Bush's folly
Simon Tisdall, The Guardian
The corrosive impact of the Iraq crisis in almost all areas of
international relations, as well as on Iraq's long-suffering civilians, was
dramatically demonstrated yesterday by the UN general secretary Kofi
Annan's blunt declaration that last year's war was illegal. The recent spat
between the US and Iraq's northern neighbour Turkey is a case in point.
Since the war officially ended, Turkey has fretted about Iraq's possible
fragmentation, Kurdish separatism, and the safety of Ir! aq's ethnic Turk
minority...

How can you hold elections amid all this savagery?
Patrick Cockburn, Independent
"In Iraq, there's ongoing acts of violence but freedom is on the march,"
said President George Bush breezily earlier in the week. No it isn't. The
violence is getting worse by the day, and freedom is visibly on the
retreat. The US and the interim Iraqi government do not have full control
of almost any Iraqi city or town outside Kurdistan. The insurgency is
spreading. Iraqis speak of their country fragmenting into competing centres
of power like Lebanon in t! he 1970s...

Mounting concern in US, Europe over Iraq debacle
Patrick Martin
A series of negative and critical comments—most notably from UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan—has highlighted the growing concern in the political and
media establishment that the US occupation of Iraq is turning into a
political and military disaster. In both the United States and Europe,
representatives of the ruling classes fear that the Bush administration has
set into motion a process of political upheaval, not only in the Middle
East, but internationally...

Turkey snaps over US bombing of its bretheren
K Gajendra Singh
For the first time since the acrimonious exchange of words in July last
year following the arrest and imprisonment of 11 Turkish commandos in
Kurdish Iraq, for which Washington expressed "regret", differences erupted
publicly this week between North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies Turkey
and the US over attacks on Turkey's ethnic cousins, the Turkmens in
northern Iraq (...) The deterioration in US-Turkish relations underlines
the fast-changing strategic scenario in the ! region in the post-Cold War
era after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the September 11 attacks on the
US, the US-led invasion on Iraq, now conceded as illegal by United Nations
Secretary General Kofi Annan, and the deteriorating security situation in
that country...

Free Arab Voice
...American snipers on Hayfa Street in Baghdad on Monday spent their

Center across the street from their perch. Five Iraqis, three of them
children, were shot to death by the US troops in this manner, according to
the local correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam...

Editorial: Iraq/Is it becoming a lost cause?
Star Tribune.
The news about Iraq this week has been all bad. Indeed, if you read what
the experts say, Iraq may now be a lost cause. Some sensible people are
beginning to utter the unthinkable: Bring the troops home and refuse to
pour more blood and money into an obvious -- and monumental -- U.S. defeat.
That is not an easy notion to contemplate for two reasons: what it would
leave in Iraq and the Middle East, and the explosive repercussions it would
have for the United States at home and ab! road. But that it is being
uttered aloud in polite company underscores a reality Americans must face:
There is no good road forward in Iraq...

Insurgency Deepens Plight of Iraq's Allawi
HAMZA HENDAWI, Associated Press
Ali Eidan knew exactly where to put the blame for the blood he swept off
the floor of his grocery store after a bomb blast killed dozens of people:
the interim government of Prime Minister Ayad Allawi (...) The perception
of Allawi as America's puppet is ever more entrenched as he embarks next
week on his first official trip to the West...

AMS: US actions foiling hostage deal
Aljazeera.net
Iraq's influential Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) has accused the US
army of hampering efforts to secure the release of two abducted French
journalists Muhammad Ayash al-Kubaisi, the representative of AMS abroad,
said on Friday, "We are under the impression that the American forces do
not want the hostages to be freed, because each time we get near a
solution, these forces push for a military escalation"...

US soldiers shoot first, no questions asked
Gethin Chamberlain
HIS name was Ahmed Hameed and he was 36 years old. He had taken the wrong
turning up to the checkpoint on the July 14 Bridge which spans the Tigris
on the south-eastern edge of what used to be known in Baghdad as the Green
Zone, but which has now been renamed the International Zone. Now he lies in
a body-bag a few yards away from the US army gun tower which opened fire on
him as he tried to turn his moped around...
