The siege of Tal Afar follows the familiar pattern of brutal American
incursions into densely populated civilian areas under the pretense of
fighting terrorism. It is a ritual that is repeated endlessly despite the
dismal results. The Pentagon seems to prefer these grand displays of
military strength to anything that might produce a political solution. It
brings to mind the old saw, "The definition of insanity is doing the same
thing over and over and expecting a diff! erent result." This appears to be
the guiding principle at the Defense Dept. with Tal Afar serving as the
most recent example of the insanity. In thepresent case, a city of 250,000
has been 90% evacuated after weeks of artillery bombardment, bombing raids,
downed power-lines, destruction of the water-system, and routine intrusions
into the homes of civilians. Ho-hum. Such paltry events never even reach
the front page of American newspapers where the ceremony of American
suffering is the only topic of interest...

of New Orleans, and in view of the comprehensive militarization of the
concept of social welfare in the United States, and, further, in view of
the fact that at every opportunity people’s tax money is being shifted

-- instead of being spent on infrastructure (e.g. the levees) prior to this
socially-created catastrophe or on humanitarian relief efforts after such
disasters -- we on the Left must ask ourselves some hard questions. Must we
always remain reactive? Wait for the rulers to act and then react to the

Must they always determine the battle, the pace and the framework? Turning

Rebels Kill Seven Occupation Troops in Iraq

evacuated to here, but one nephew who had a broken leg was trapped in New

died in the American assault. Most of the bodies of those killed by! the US
forces were still buried in the rubble of their homes which were bombed
