Oil in the election
Salah Al-Mokhtar, Al-Ahram Weekly
...One of the most important reasons for insisting on holding elections is
to set up an Iraqi government that the US is able to describe as
legitimate, which could then be presented to the international community as
the product of free elections. It would then have the authority to take
decisions and sign treaties that would be enforceable under international
law. This is exactly what America needs to make happen in order to achieve
two fundamental goals: a spe edy withdrawal from Iraq to avoid further
human and material losses at the hands of a fierce Iraqi armed resistance,
and the signing of long-term strategic and economic agreements...

Roots of a tragedy in Texas "The war changed who my son is"
Cindy Beringer, Socialist Worker
JUST BEFORE the Iraq war began, Rev. Johnny Williams Sr. and his wife
Patricia went on an East Texas television station to talk about their faith
that God would protect their Marine son in that war, and send him home
"better and whole." Now his mother says, "Something happened to my son.
Some of the things that he endured I may never know. But it changed who he
is, and I'm sorry." Johnny Lee Williams was arrested Ja nuary 22 in Arizona
and charged with the murder of Megan Holden of Tyler, Texas...

The Shi'ites' Faustian pact
Pepe Escobar
In Najaf, the holy Shi'ite city, the grand ayatollahs are busy advancing a
religious agenda: Ali al-Sistani, Mohammad Ishaq al-Fayad, Bashir al-Najafi
and Mohammad Said Hakim compose the al-marja' iyyah (source of infallible
authority on all religious matters). They are unanimous: the Shi'ite
religious parties, the big winners in the elections, must implement Sharia
(Islamic) law - and in fact this is one of the parties' top priorities.
This does not mean that Sistani wants - or needs - to control an Iraqi
theocracy: it means that the Shi'ite religious parties themselves - led by
secular people - will give birth to an Iraqi Islamic republic..

Dance, Hospitality, and Bribes
Raed Jarrar, Raed in the Middle
Adnan Al Janabi is an educated person. I know him since many years through
a mutual friend. He studied, lived and worked in Europe for a long time. He
was an Important person in Iraq's politicseven before the war, as a big
tribe leader, and a member of the Iraqi parliament. Unfortunately, he is
playing a very bad role in the post-occupation Iraq (...) The US occupation
brought some Chalabis from outside, and created dozens or new home-made
Chalabis...< br>

Emma Gunby
The British Army camp where the alleged abuse of Iraqi prisoners took place
was "infected" by high-ranking soldiers who allowed mistreatment to take
place, a court martial heard yesterday. Corporal Daniel Kenyon, one of
three soldiers accused of abusing captured looters, told the court his men
had been poisoned by the atmosphere at Camp Bread Basket, in Basra,
southern Iraq...

Profiteering from the Iraq war
Burhanuddin Hasan
...America lost its cherished values of justice and respect for human
rights when it imprisoned thousands of PoWs from Afghanistan and Iraq as
"war combatants" at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib prison where American
soldiers committed atrocious human rights abuses against defenceless
prisoners who were denied all legal assistance, in flagrant violation of
the Geneva Conventions. America also put an embargo on media coverage of
these prisons, violating the freedom of information guaranteed in the US
Constitution. Now, several vested interests of the United States in waging
war against Iraq have come to light. The Centre for Corporate Policy has
issued a list of big US multinational companies that have earned huge
financial benefits from the Iraq war...

Shia rebels to work with British army
Neil MacDonald, Financial Times
...The British say they have reached a tacit understanding with local
organisations associated with radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to
maintain security as a Sadrist-dominated provincial council takes shape.
According to local candidates, Sadrist-leaning candidates will take more
than half of the 20 seats on the Maysan provincial council when results are
announced in the next few days...

From Haiti to Iraq and Beyond
The Pirates' Brand of 'Democracy'
The Black Commentator
The U.S. is determined to "make the pursuit of freedom the organizing
principle of the 21st century," said Condoleezza Rice on the Paris leg of
her worldwide debut as Secretary of State. The real nature of this
pirate-imposed brand of "democracy," designed to bestow absolute freedom of
action to U.S. corporations, is evident in Iraq and Haiti. After attempting
to straightjacket future Iraqi governments with laws that would h ave
allowed 100 percent foreign ownership of key state assets - in direct
contradiction of the Iraqi constitution - and placing exiles in nominal
power, the U.S. reluctantly agreed to hold elections. Yet the Americans
continue to harden at least 12 "enduring bases" as if they have no
intention of leaving, no matter what Iraq's future government says...

Iraq Insurgent Attacks Kill More Than 50
MARIAM FAM, AP
A car bomb detonated by remote control exploded Thursday in Baghdad,
killing two Iraqis but missing a U.S. military convoy as insurgent violence
claimed more than 50 lives. Clashes between Iraqi police and rebels erupted
along a major highway southeast of the capital. With violence on the rise
after the Jan. 30 election, Iraqi officials announced they would seal the
country's borders for five days this month around a major Shiite religious
holiday...
