Baghdad Burning - Osservatorio Iraq
Devo scriverlo velocemente. Niente elettricità per tre giorni di seguito
(beh, a meno di non contare quell'ora magnifica che abbiamo avuto 3 giorni
fa ...). I generatori a benzina funzionano a stento.

Iraq e i crimini commessi» (...)

To torture is to lose the war
William Pfaff
A historian in the future or a moralist is likely to think the Bush
government's enthusiasm for torture the most striking aspect of its war
against terror. This started very early. Proposals to authorise torture
were circulating even before there was anyone to torture. Days after the
9/11 attacks, the administration made it known that the United States was
no longer bound by international treaties, or by US and established US
military standards, concerning torture and t! he treatment of prisoners...

In Defense of 'Chemical Ali'
Jude Wanniski
...The NYTimes has lately been noting that he is called "Chemical Ali" by
Iraqis, but I also think this "nickname" was cooked up fairly recently and
was broadcast by the U.S. press corps. He may be an evil fellow, for one
reason or another, but I doubt "Iraqis" refer to him as "Chemical Ali"
(...) You will find appended below an op-ed article that appeared in your
newspaper on Jan. 31 of this year by the CIA's senior analyst during the
Iran-Iraq war, Dr. Stephen Pelletie! re. He argued that whatever
human-rights abuses Saddam Hussein may have engaged in, genocide was not
one of them, and that the Halabja episode in particular did not involve any
deliberate gassing of Iraqi Kurds (...) "Chemical Ali" supposedly gave the
order to the Iraqi Air Force to drop chemical bombs on Halabja, but W.
Patrick Lang, who was the senior analyst for the Defense Intelligence
Agency in that period and who concurs with Pelletiere on the facts in
evidence, tells me the armies exchanged gas by mortars and no aircraft were
used - as was reported by the New Yorker. Incidentally, there is still no
evidence that any Iraqi Kurds died of gas ordered by "Chemical Ali," a
nickname cooked up by the same propagandists at the Pentagon who made "Ali"
the king of spades in its deck of cards...

British doctors' role in Iraq jail abuse faces probe
Lois Rogers, Medical Editor, Sunday Times
THE General Medical Council has requested an investigation into the role of
British doctors who treated Iraqi prisoners who were allegedly abused while
detained in British army camps. It has asked Ian Jenkins, the
surgeon-general, to look into the activities of those who supervised
interrogations or treated Iraqi civilians with injuries allegedly caused by
abuse...

Unite Against America, Saddam Urges from Prison Cell
Scotsman.com
Ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein urged his compatriots to remain
united against the US occupation and warned of the potential dangers of the
upcoming elections, his lawyers said today (...) "The president sent
recommendations to the Iraqi people to remain united and not fall in the
trap of America's slogans," she said. "He said Kurds, Arabs, Shiites,
Sunnis and Christians are all Iraqis who all have to stand united against
the American plot" (! ...) When he heard aircraft flying over his detention
location, Saddam said: "These are probably going to Fallujah. I live with
their pain"...

Dear Santa Bush
Mikel Weisser
I am writing you to thank you for the wonderful presents you've given me so
far this year and get in my wish list for next year. I hope that you don't
think I have been naughty just because I spent the whole year trying to get
you thrown out of office and indicted for war crimes...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday, 19 December 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice.
...Eyewitnesses told the correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam that at 5:45am
Sunday morning American troops stormed into Bushra's home looking for her
brother whom the US accuses of being a member of the Resistance. The
brother was not home, but as American troops ransacked their living
quarters, Bushra noticed one of the soldiers staring at her and smiling.
Bu! shra's mother said the girl shuddered as she was convulsed with fear.
The Americans intended to take her with them as a prisoner. Panicked, she
ran out into the street where one of the soldiers shot and killed her...

A letter to the People of America
Is America better off after Invading Iraq?
Safiyyah al-Khayr, Iraqwar
...I believe that the American People are better than the criminals that
run their Congress, Senate and Whitehouse and have confidence that common
sense will prevail over imperial hubris and ignorance. It is in the best
interests of America for the American People to reclaim their Constitution
and civil rights and to adhere to the Geneva Conventions and embrace
International law. O' People of America take ! back your government. Take
the power away from the Zionists, Halliburton, and other big interests, and
put it back into the hands of the People - all of the People. It is
necessary to reject an Administration built on lies and illegal policies
which violate not only the U.S. constitution, but violate the dignity of
Americans and the people of the world...

An Alphabet, to educate US soldiers and help them flee Iraq
Abu Assur, Al-Moharer
You know what an alphabet is, US cannon fodder? Alphabets are usually for
toddlers, they are written, and sung by moms and dads to rock the babies to
the sound of beautiful words, so they will be ready to confront life in
tranquil and elevated way. It helps them read and get informed; because
extra information is an extra candle we hold in dark moments. Culture and
education help people from the cradle to the grave, to mend for them!
selves and avoid to be laughed at, to enroll for the US army to defend
Rumsfeld fortune and to be led like sheep and to be slaughtered in Iraq
battlefields for the lord idol of Zion...

IPS. "They used everything—tanks, artillery, infantry, poison gas. Fallujah
has been bombed to the ground." Mr. Hammad is from the Julan district of
Fallujah, where some of the heaviest fighting occurred.

Aren't they attacking the Palestinians and Iraqis on behalf of Zionism?
Ibrahim Ebeid, Al-Moharer
...As we have stated before, the Zionists were giving the task to destroy
Palestine and its society and the American Imperialists entrusted to
destroy Iraq and its institutions. Destruction in Iraq and Palestine became
overwhelming, displacing the Palestinians and Iraqis became the tyrannical
policies of this unholy alliance. Last week, the news came out of occupied
Baghdad, that the American invading forces attacked! Hay Al-Baladiyat, a
section in east Baghdad where displaced Palestinians live...

American soldiers and fighting terrorism
Big terrorists in a kindergarten
Residents of the Palestinian quarter in Baghdad - Al-Moharer
...Shortly after his arrival this officer attacked the Palestinian quarter
and destroyed its contents including the children toys and the computers.
The attack which continued from 4:00pm to midnight created a state of
horror among the men, women and children. In the next day the First
Chivalry Division headed by Colonel Robert issued a statement saying that
it has arrested w! hat it described as "some big terrorists". The local
residents commented ironically on the attack as saying that the Americans

Iraq Faces Winter With Little Electricity
Reuters
Sabotage attacks on power plants, transmission lines, oil pipelines and
fuel trucks are keeping the electricity out for more than 12 hours a day in
Iraq, leaving many people to face a freezing winter by candlelight. Iraqi
officials, wary of growing instability before the elections, say outages
have reached crisis proportions, especially in the capital, with no end in

What happened in Kurdish Halabja?
Mohammed al-Obaidi, Aljazeera.net
The truth of what happened in Halabja had always been hidden from the
public, and many who knew exactly what happened in this Kurdish village in
the second half of March 1988 disputed the western media coverage of the
story. It is a fact that key Kurdish leaders aided by the CIA and the
Israeli Mossad have used a wide network of public relations companies and
media outlets in the west to manipulate and twist the truth of what
happened in Kurdish ! Halabja in 1988 in favour of the Kurdish political
parties (...) "And it is an especially crucial issue right now. We say
Saddam is a monster, a maniac who gassed his own people, and the world
should not tolerate him. But why? Because that is the last argument the US
has for going to war with Iraq."...

A poll governed by fear: millions will get no chance to vote, and the war
will go on
Patrick Cockburn, The Independent
...The Iraqi election on 30 January, for which campaigning began last week,
will be one of the most secretive in history. Iraqi television shows only
the feet of election officials rather than their faces, because they are
terrified of their identity being revealed. It will be a poll governed by
fear. Those fears were amply borne out yesterday when insurgents launched
attacks on election offices ! in northern Iraq...

Intelligence Estimate States the Obvious: Bush is Losing Iraq
Kurt Nimmo
Supposedly, this is news: "the United States and its Iraqi allies aren't
winning the battle against Iraqi insurgents who are trying to derail the
country's Jan. 30 elections, according to administration officials,"
reports the Seattle Times. "Nor have the United States and interim Iraqi
government been able to find any divisions they can exploit to divide and
conquer the Sunni Muslim insurgency," according to "classified"
intelligence estima! tes. Of course not. Because wars of national
liberation cannot be defeated unless excessive violence and brutality are

More casualties of war: US soldiers charged in deaths of Iraqi civilians
and fellow servicemen
Joseph Kay, WSWS
The US military has charged seven soldiers, members of the same battalion,
with murder in the deaths of four Iraqis and two US servicemen. The charges
arise from incidents this August and September that reveal a great deal
about the character of the war and its brutal consequences, both for Iraqis
and for American soldiers. Five of these men come from the same unit,
Charlie Company of the 1st Battalion,! 41st Regiment (1-41), which numbers
about 150 soldiers. Evidence presented at the trials begun earlier this
month indicates that several of the soldiers from Charlie Company
cold-bloodedly murdered unarmed Iraqi civilians...
