The Common Market of the South (Mercosur) was established in 1991 with the Treaty of Asunción with the goal of creating a common market among Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.[1] Venezuela joined in 2012, and Bolivia, a current Mercosur Associate Member, is in the process of gaining full membership.[2] As of 2012, Mercosur had a combined GDP of $3.5 trillion USD, and is the world’s fourth-largest trade bloc.[3]Although it has not achieved the level of membership and degree of integration originally envisioned, Mercosur represents a regionally and internationally important economic bloc.

A cuatro meses del asesinato de la reconocida activista ambiental y defensora de los derechos indígenas Berta Cáceres, otro asesinato demuestra que la impunidad prevalece en Honduras. Este nuevo asesinato ocurrió el día 6 de julio donde la víctima, Lesbia Yaneth Urquía fue también miembro del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH, organización cofundada por Berta Cáceres hace 23 años enfocada a la defensoría de los derechos ambientales e indígenas). Urquía se unió a COPINH tras el golpe de estado en 2009 contra el presidente electo, Manuel Zelaya, donde se destacó como figura prominente en la lucha contra la construcción de la represa hidroeléctrica Aurora I, en la municipalidad de San José, La Paz.
