Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Thursday, 19 November 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice
...The Arab Baath Socialist Party in Iraq published a declaration on Friday
entitled "Religious Reaction is the historically the closed reserve for the
policies of the United States." The Baath statement denounced the activity
of various forms of religious reaction. In the first place there is the
religious reaction that acts hand in glove for Iran, and has d! one so
under the Shah as well as under Khomeini (...) As it served Iranian
interests in Iraq, it also targeted the Arab character of Iraq and its
unity as a country. In the second place, the Baath statement said, there is
the religious reaction that has historically served western colonialism and
US imperialism. It served US imperialism in its global cold war against the
socialist camp after the Second World War, the Baath statement said...

Troops raid Mosul hospital
Guardian
...In Mosul, Iraqi commandos, again backed by US forces, focused on the
city's al-Zaharawi hospital, which they cordoned off after receiving
information that insurgents were using it to treat their wounded. They
stormed the building overnight and arrested three suspects, according to
the US military...

Utter Contempt for Humanity
Rahul Mahajan, Empire Notes
...American soldiers and members of the new Iraqi National Guard stormed
the Abu Hanifa mosque either directly after or during prayers (reports
differ), opening fire on worshippers, killing four and wounding nine. Built
on the resting place of Abu Hanifa, the "Imam Aadham" (great imam), founder
of the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, the mosque is probably the
most important Sunni mosque in the country (...) There could hardly be a
more pointed insult! to the Sunni population of Iraq than to kill people
there while at prayer, with "Pieces of brain ... splattered on one of the
walls inside the mosque while large blood stains covered carpets in several
places" and to arrest the chief imam of the mosque, Sheikh Muayid
al-Aadhami...

'The war is over, but there is no peace ... and the killings go on'
Abbas Ahmed Ibrahim, Independent
This is a strange time in Fallujah. They say the war is over, but there is
no peace. Every day there is shooting, and there are still killings going
on. There is very little left of the town now, everywhere there are
buildings which have been destroyed. There is also a terrible smell. We
know what it is - it is the smell of dead bodies. Many have now been
cleared away, but the smell does not go away, it will stay ! with us for a
long time...

USA military success in Iraq greatly exaggerated
Ernesto Cienfuegos, La Voz de Aztlan
The success of the USA military occupation of Iraq and of the recent
assault on Fallujah is being greatly exaggerated by US generals and the
Zionist controlled media. On Friday June 13, 2003, this author wrote an
article "IRAQ: 'Guerilla Warfarè is taking a heavy toll on US occupation
forces" that has proven prophetic. The article addressed the lethal Che
Guevara type "Guerilla Tactics" that the Iraqi insurgency was utilizing a!
gainst the occupiers and that in the "Iraqi environment" it will be next to
impossible for the invaders to win in this type of warfare...

Tomgram: On "Iraqifying" the Quagmire
Draining the Swamp
Tom Engelhardt
...News about the resulting devastation grows worse by the day, though the
announced body counts of dead insurgents -- 1,200 or more -- can't be
trusted. (I'm reminded of the informal "Mere Gook Rule" of the Vietnam War
when it came to body counts: "If it's dead and it's Vietnamese, it's VC
[Vietcong].") But the main point no one will make in the American news
mainstream -- where U.S. military self-constraint tends to be emphasized
and mi! litary claims about efforts to avoid civilian casualties are
printed without significant comment -- is simple indeed: The levels of
destruction in Falluja were not a by-product of the campaign, but the
product itself. The rubblizing of whole neighborhoods was meant. The Bush
administration may indeed have invaded Iraq on a theory, not a plan, but
the assault on Falluja itself was planned with great care over significant
periods of time...

Destroying a city to show who's boss
Socialist Worker
THE SAME people who wanted you to believe in weapons of mass destruction
and "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq are now trying to sell you a U.S.
military "victory" in Falluja. And once more, the U.S. media are parroting
their line. "Breaking a city in order to fix it," declared a headline in
the New York Times--an echo of the notorious statement by a U.S. military
officer in Vietnam that his forces had destroyed a village in order to
"save" it...

On executions, beheadings, and other propaganda operations
Larry Chin, Online Journal Associate Editor
...Reports of the genocidal mass murder, atrocities and war crimes now
being committed by US forces in Fallujah (also see dispatches by Dahr
Jamail from Iraq) have been "countered" by a video of the apparent
execution of Margaret Hassan, a CARE relief official who was beloved and
respected by Iraqis and non-Iraqis alike. This act, blamed on insurgents,
has prompted outrage among Iraqis against rebel fighters. Bu! t was the
Hassan killing part of a British intelligence operation?...

Weasel Words by the Dogs of Straw
William Bowles
...On 17 November the Foreign Office issued a response to the report in the
Lancet that calculated that deaths in Iraq (excluding those in Fallujah
from the current blitzkrieg and those of last April's attack on Fallujah)
were in the order of 100,000 and this number is more than likely to be on
the conservative side as it deliberately excluded Fallujah figures in order
not to skew its findings. According to the FO, total deaths since the
invasion last March ! were in the order of 3,800. And where did it get
these numbers from? The destroyed Iraqi Ministry of Health. Well whaddya
know but then what else can we expect from a government that fabricated an
entire lie in order to justify the invasion in the first place...

US battle plans begin to unravel
Michael Schwartz
In the New York Times this week the first crack appeared in the armor of
the "victory in Fallujah" facade maintained by the major US media since the
battle began. Eric Schmitt and Robert Worth discuss a secret Marine Corps
report that reveals the major bind the US has gotten itself into by
sweeping through Fallujah and attempting to pacify it. This US strategy has
created exactly the dilemma that many critics of the war had been
predicting: in order to hold Falluj! ah the United States has to keep large
numbers of troops there, and then the Americans will not have sufficient
troops to handle the uprising elsewhere in the Sunni areas....

The Failure of the Corporate Media's Coverage in Iraq
Democracy Now!
As the situation in Iraq continues to grow more bloody by the day, the
unelected interim government of Iyad Allawi continues its crackdown on the
Iraqi media. Last week, Allawi's government threatened media organizations
that do not report on the Iraqi governments spin on the siege of Falluja,
saying reporters must differentiate between, "innocent citizens of Fallujah
who are not targeted by the military operations and between the terrorist
grou! ps who infiltrated the city and took its people hostage under the
pretext of resistance and jihad"...

Insurgents loot police uniforms
News.telegraph
Insurgents have acquired thousands of police uniforms after officers
deserted their posts when rebels attacked stations in Mosul. About 3,200 of
the Iraqi town's 4,000 police officers dropped their weapons and ran off,
intimidated into submission by groups of armed insurgents during a 48-hour
period, it has emerged. American-led troops will now potentially face
rebels wearing police uniforms making it extremely difficult to distinguish
them from policemen...

What was the principal motive for the U.S. invasion of Iraq?
Notes from the Editors, Monthly Review
...U.S. corporate interests and the U.S. government have never been shy
about explaining—at least within business circles—their postwar economic
goals for Iraq, which were to start with a "Mass Privatization Program."
Robert Ebel, former vice president of a Dutch-based oil exploration
company, now connected to the influential Washington-based Center for
Strategic and International Studies, makes it clear that U.S. !
corporations are prepared to invest tens of billions of dollars in Iraq and
are insisting that Iraqi oil be privatized. "We're looking for places to
invest around the world. You know, along comes Iraq, and I think a lot of
oil companies would be disappointed if Iraq were to say 'we're going to do
it ourselves.'"...

Fallujah captives: Saddam set up insurgency cells in 2001
SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM
Insurgents captured in Fallujah have told Iraqi military interrogators that
most of those fighting in Fallujah were former security officers for the
regime of Saddam Hussein. The insurgents said Saddam organized special
operations units, starting in 2001, to counter any foreign invasion in
Iraq. Most of those units, the insurgents said, are still active in the
Sunni Triangle...

Killing on Tape and the Broader War Criminality
Paul Street, www.dissidentvoice.org
Why do they hate us? Because "we" are, among other things, war criminals.
If you are Arab and/or Muslim today, chances you have been watching,
hearing about, discussing, and feeling deep rage over some terrible film
footage. It's been the story of the day on Al-Jazeera, played and discussed
and denounced over and over again. The white imperial Marines walk into a
mosque in ravaged Fallujah, where the bodies of dead and injured !
resistance fighters lay prone on the floor...

Reuters Chief and Editor of todaysalternativenews.com Condemn U.S. Killing
of Journalists in Iraq
Sam Hamod and Agence France Presse
...For the past two years, we have been pointing out that the U.S. military
has been targeting foreign, non-embedded, journalists because they don't
want any independent photos or stories coming out of Iraq to show the
brutality and killing by American trooops. See some of our articles on the
U.S. policy of killing Arab and other independent journalists on our site.
We are pleased t! hat the head of Reuters News Service, Mr.David
Schlesinger, has come out with the truth, that the U.S. military was
responsible for these deaths...

Commons motion to impeach Blair gets go-ahead
David Hencke, The Guardian
The parliamentary motion to impeach Tony Blair for "gross misconduct" over
the war against Iraq will be published next Wednesday, the day after the
Queen's speech. It will be the first to be tabled in 198 years, since Lord
Melville, a close friend of the then prime minister, William Pitt the
younger, faced impeachment for misusing public money in running the
Admiralty. Senior parliamentary officials, including legal advisers to the
Commons S! peaker, Michael Martin, on Wednesday night approved the wording
of the text as meeting parliamentary rules, allowing the motion to be
tabled on the first day of the new session. The Tory chief whip, David
Maclean, has paged every Tory frontbench MP telling them not to sign it...

The Crushing of Fallujah
JAMES PETRAS, CounterPunch
...Yes, there are differences between Shirer's account of Nazi propaganda
in defense of the conquest of Europe and the US media's apology for the
invasion of Iraq and Israel's slaughter of the Palestinians: One is
committed in the name of the Fuehrer and the Fatherland, the other in the
name of God and Democracy. Go tell that to the bloated corpses gnawed by
dogs in the ruins of Fallujah...

Success of US assault on Falluja disputed
Aljazeera.net
...Furthermore, a report leaked to The New York Times, quoting US marine
officers in Falluja, warned of the "outstanding resilience" of fighters
opposed to the presence of foreign troops in Iraq. Fighters would continue
to disrupt efforts to set up reliable Iraqi security forces and to hold an
election in late January, the marine intelligence report was quoted as
saying...
