US 'in double attack' on Fallujah. US Tactic in Fallujah: Bomb Cars, Wait
for Help, Then Bomb Helpers
Agence France-Presse
AT least three people were killed in a double US air strike on the
insurgent stronghold of Fallujah in Iraq, witnesses said today. "A plane
fired a missile which struck cars at the northern entrance (to the city),
and residents rushed to the scene to assist the wounded," said a taxi
driver who witnessed the raid last night. "There was one killed and four to
five wounded," 29-year-old Amer Aba! s said. Another witness, Ahmed
Abdallay, said: "At least two other people were killed in the second
attack. Two bodies were taken to a clinic"...

Majority of Brits Want Iraq Pullout Deadline
Reuters
Most voters want Prime Minister Tony Blair to set a date for the withdrawal
of British troops from Iraq, according to a poll for the Guardian. Seven
out of 10 of those polled by ICM said Blair should set a deadline for a
pullout of the 8,500 British soldiers in Iraq...

Sequestro di due giornalisti francesi in Iraq
Manuel Freytas, www.resistenze.org

Outside View: Iraq -- Disastrous illusions
UPI
For the past 18 months, the Bush administration has lied to the American
people about the rationale for war in Iraq, and it has compounded these
lies by providing misleading information to justify its actions, topping
all this by disseminating the disastrous illusion of a rosy future for
Iraq. By now everybody knows there was no plan for how to govern the
country once major combat was over, no strategy on how to secure Iraq in
the post-Saddam era, and no consideratio! n of the potential for armed
resistance...

WMD, Blix, and Us
A.J. Chien , ZNet
With more than half of the US public now having misgivings about the Iraq
war, it has become fashionable and easy to brandish criticisms of the war's
rationale. Foremost among them is the failure to find weapons of mass
destruction (WMD). Not only many journalists, pundits, and politicians but
even the Bush administration concedes this retrospective weakness in the
rationale. And then, unfortunately, there is much of the peace movement. No
one who cares about peace should argue! against the war on these grounds.
If WMD were found, would that then be justification?

Blair is being grotesquely disingenuous
The Herald
TONY Blair cannot be allowed to get away with the grotesquely disingenuous
assertion that we are now seeing some kind of "second" conflict in Iraq, as
if it were somehow different and separate from the war he launched against
that country. This is not the case. The bloodshed and violence we are now
seeing on a daily basis in Iraq spring directly from the invasion and the
disbandment of the Iraqi army; they are the entirely predictable – and
predicted – consequenc! es of the actions taken by the British and US
governments. The forces driving the carnage are those which we released...

Massive U.S. offensive reported in Ramadi
UPI
A massive offensive designed to eliminate Iraqi insurgency in Ramadi has
rocked the city, U.S. military officials said. M1-A1 Abrams tanks, Bradley
fighting vehicles, and armored Humvees took to Ramadi streets as soldiers
patrolled streets searching for weapons and militants, Stars and Stripes
news reported Monday. Shops were closed and most residents stayed indoors,
officials said...

A strident minority: anti-Bush US troops in Iraq
Ann Scott Tyson | Correspondent of The Christian Science Monitor
..."Nobody I know wants Bush," says an enlisted soldier in Najaf, adding,
"This whole war was based on lies." Like several others interviewed, his
animosity centered on a belief that the war lacked a clear purpose even as
it took a tremendous toll on US troops, many of whom are in Iraq
involuntarily under "stop loss" orders that keep them in the service for
months beyond their scheduled exit in order ! to keep units together during
deployments. "There's no clear definition of why we came here," says Army
Spc. Nathan Swink, of Quincy, III...

A `Cut-and-Run` Decision Cooking?
Jude Wanniski
Novak's column today isn't quite conclusive, but you can bet he is ahead of
the pack in sniffing out the Bush team's recognition that it will have to
pull all the U.S. troops out of Iraq next year. All of them: "Inside the
Bush administration policymaking apparatus, there is strong feeling that
U.S. troops must leave Iraq next year. This determination is not predicated
on success in implanting Iraqi democracy and internal stability. Rather,
the officials are saying:! Ready or not, here we go." Novak is correct that
Team Bush will have to deny a "cut-and-run" decision is in the early
planning stages, but behind all the happy talk from the President about the
progress being made, it looks like the "insurgents" have won...

"Bushery"
Eric Fottorino, t r u t h o u t
Behind the numbers, there are the deaths. All kinds of deaths. Civilians
and military, those with "weapons in hand" and those "who were just passing
by that way" who will never again pass by anywhere. Iraq has become an
enormous statistic of violent mortality. So here we trace curves, fill out
diagrams to create a more removed version of this humdrum horror, but how
speaking it is, screaming even...

Why We Cannot Win
Al Lorentz
Before I begin, let me state that I am a soldier currently deployed in
Iraq, I am not an armchair quarterback. Nor am I some politically
idealistic and naïve young soldier, I am an old and seasoned
Non-Commissioned Officer with nearly 20 years under my belt. Additionally,
I am not just a soldier with a muds-eye view of the war, I am in Civil
Affairs and as such, it is my job to be aware of all the events occurring
in this country and specifically in my region. I have come to the concl!
usion that we cannot win here for a number of reasons...

Bush’s Hollow Iraq Narrative
Bill Berkowitz, www.dissidentvoice.org
The occupation of Iraq is spiraling out of control, averaging more than
three US deaths a day since the beginning of September. Yet despite the
cascading bad news -- the US casualty count has jumped from 1,000 on the
morning of September 7 to 1,029 at press time -- President Bush is
steadfastly sticking to his narrative. The occupation of Iraq is muddled,
confused, and messy and the prospects for the future are bleak...

The Great Betrayal
Kim Petersen, www.dissidentvoice.org
...The allies denounced and dealt harshly with traitors and what they
considered to be potential traitors in WWII. Occupation was anathema and
the heroic resistance was lauded. Why then is the terminology of former
WWII allies reversed in Iraq? Occupation is legitimate and resistance is
terrorism? Collaboration is exemplary?...

Losing Our Humanity
Bud A. McClure, CommonDreams.org
The war in Iraq is lost. The tipping point has been surpassed and no amount
of violence unleashed by the U.S. military can restore the equilibrium in
that country. Our invasion has plunged them into chaos. Iraq has now
entered the beginning stages of civil war which will last for many years to
come...

Tribunal Convenes, Convicts Bush
Carl Doerner, www.dissidentvoice.org
...The Nuremberg tribunal in the aftermath of World War II, presided over
by American Prosecutor Robert Jackson and Judge Francis Biddle, held that
any war of aggression be, henceforth, considered a violation of
international law. The first, irrefutable charge of which George W. Bush
stands guilty is that, like Adolph Hitler, he planned and carried out a war
of aggression against Iraq - this being the supreme violation of
international law...

US confirms captive beheaded in Iraq
Aljazeera.net
A US official has confirmed that a purported Iraqi group has beheaded a US
captive in Iraq. Earlier, a video appearing on a website thought to be
affiliated with groups sympathetic to Jordanian-born fugitive Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi, identified the captive as Eugene Armstrong and showed a masked
man cutting his head off with a knife. The US official said Armstrong's
body had been recovered in Iraq, but did not specify where nor when this
transpired...

Sunni body opposes sectarianism
Aljazeera.net
The Committee of Muslim Scholars, two of whose members were murdered on
Monday, was set up just four days after the fall of Saddam Hussein's
government and is Iraq's main Sunni organisation. The committee, which
consists of 13 clerics plus a 55-strong consultative council, oversees some
3,000 mosques across Iraq. One of the committee's main objectives is to
create an atmosphere free of sectarianism so that Iraqis can live as "one
people in a united country", said the ! committee's public relations
director, Abd al-Salam al-Qubaisi...

overstepped the line of what was permissible in Germany...
