The programme has been specifically designed to effectively and practically train participants in skills, tools and methods for integrating peacebuilding and development work, collecting together best practices and lessons learned from the field to assist individuals and organizations to strengthen their work in program design and field implementation in conflict affected communities. Particular focus is placed upon developing conflict sensitive and peacebuilding effective development and programming, supporting and strengthening local capacities and national peacebuilding and development infrastructure, and improving project development, planning and implementation. This includes: Ø Towards Better Peace Practice: Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation in the Field; Ø Integrating peacebuilding and conflict transformation into development work, including development work in war and violence affected communities and post-war recovery; Ø Peacebuilding and Conflict Sensitive Development Work: Improving Development Through Peacebuilding and Peacebuilding through Development Ø Integrating peacebuilding in DDR, aid, development and relief operations; Ø Developing conflict transformation and peacebuilding capacities within organisations and partners - supporting local capacity development and community and national peacebuilding resources and infrastructure; Ø Peace and Conflict Impact Assessments Ø Designing sector specific peacebuilding and conflict transformation interventions and strategies for: community-based organisations, local authorities, national and cultural groups, youth, women, media, and businesses; PaD will help you or your organisation’s staff to: Ø Benefit from best practices and lessons learned for peacebuilding, conflict transformation and development programing and implementation from the field; Ø Improve program and policy design, development and implementation Ø Explore the most up-to-date work being done in the field by national and international organizations; Ø Develop effective, practical methods for integrating peacebuilding and conflict transformation into the work of organizations/institutions/agencies; Ø Explore all stages of programme development, implementation, follow-through and post-programme/project work for peace and conflict impact assessment; Ø Ensure the development of projects and programmes appropriate for conflict settings, with particular focus on developing sustainable processes and strengthening and supporting local/national resources and capacities for peacebuilding; WHO IS THE PROGRAMME RELEVANT FOR? WHO SHOULD APPLY? v Field Staff v Country Directors and Project and Program Managers v Partner Organisations working in Peacebuilding, Development, Community-Based Work, Gender, Social and Ethnic Conflicts, and Conflict Transformation v Peaceworkers, Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation Practitioners v Directors & Programme Managers / Coordinators of Organisations / Agencies / Departments working in violence and war affected countries, in aid, development, and emergency relief, and/or in organizations with programmes in peacebuilding and conflict transformation, including national, international, head office and field staff v International and National Development Agencies and Inter-Governmental Organisations Staff – UN Agencies, OSCE, CoE, OAS, AU, AL, EU, ASEAN v Local and National Government Authorities responsible for mediation, negotiation, development programming and post-war recovery in violence and war affected communities v Government and Agency/IGO/NGO Policy Makers and Strategic Planners v Peacekeeping forces and officers engaged in peacekeeping, peace interventions and DDR programmes THE TRAINING PROGRAMME PROGRAMME OUTLINE & CALENDAR The PaD Training Programme will take place from Monday to Friday, July 24 - 28, 2006 at the International Peace and Development Training Centre of the Romanian Peace Institute (PATRIR) in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Participants will be expected to arrive by Sunday, April 23rd at the latest. The Training Programme will be divided into Morning and Afternoon sessions for each day, combining intensive training, group work, workshop sessions, and individually designed working modules. There will be a one and a half hours break for lunch and individual work in between, and additional breaks for tea and coffee in each session. The programme will begin each day at 09:00 and end at 18:00. Advanced Preparation Materials A web-site will be created in advance of the programme to assist participants with training materials and resources to prepare for the programme. These may also be shared with organisational colleagues and staff. Upon completion of the five-days training a CD will be provided to all participants with selected materials, including handbooks, best practice and lessons-learned guides, manuals, and follow-up materials to assist participants and their organizations. Additional books and materials will be provided to the participants together with their welcome package upon their arrival to the programme. Please Note: The participation fee covers the course costs/participation in the training programme, accommodation, breakfast, lunch and three dinners, and all course materials. THE TRAINER AND FACILITATOR Kai Frithjof Brand-Jacobsen is founder and Director of the Peace Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR) and Co-Director of TRANSCEND, and is on the Executive Board of the TRANSCEND Peace University (TPU) where he is Course Director for the courses Peacebuilding and Empowerment and War to Peace Transitions. He is a global consultant and expert advisor and practitioner on peacebuilding, conflict transformation, war-to-peace transitions, and post-war reconciliation and healing, and has worked in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Russia, Moldova, South Eastern Europe, Colombia, Cambodia, southern Thailand, Burma, Somalia, Aceh, North America, and the Middle East at the invitation of governments, inter-governmental organisations, UN agencies, and local organisations and communities promoting local development, community empowerment, and peacebuilding. He has written and published widely, and is author of The Struggle Continues: The Political Economy of Globalisation and People's Struggles for Peace (Pluto, forthcoming), co-author, together with Johan Galtung and Carl Jacobsen, of Searching for Peace: The Road to TRANSCEND (Pluto, 2000 & 2002) and Editor of the TRANSCEND book series published together with Pluto Press, Critical Peace Studies: Peace by Peaceful Means. He is currently working on preparing a comprehensive handbook for Peacebuilding, Conflict Transformation and Post-War Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Journal of Peace and Development and the Executive Board of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, and an Associate of the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research, as well as an advisor to several governments, foreign ministries, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Council of Europe. In 1999 he was founder and Director of the Coalition for Global Solidarity and Social Development, and in 2000, together with Johan Galtung, he was founder of the Nordic Institute for Peace Research (NIFF). Since 1996 he has provided more than 250 training programmes in peacebuilding, development, and constructive conflict transformation to more than 5000 participants in 36 countries. Kai Frithjof Brand-Jacobsen will be supported by the staff and additional trainers of the Peace Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania (PATRIR). THE ORGANISERS TRANSCEND - A Peace and Development Network for Conflict Transformation by Peaceful Means TRANSCEND is a network of more than 300 practitioners and scholars in peacebuilding and development from over 80 countries around the world. Committed to the promotion of peace by peaceful means, TRANSCEND has 24 active programmes, and conducts its work through action, education/training, dissemination and research. Its aim is to address the core challenges facing Romania and the countries of South and Eastern Europe, to strengthen and empower grassroots organisations and citizens’ action, to mobilise people for active peace work and peaceful conflict transformation, and to address the structural causes of poverty, human rights violations and economic and social injustice. PATRIR is an institute and an organisation for research, training and active peace work. PATRIR organises training programmes in peacebuilding and peaceful conflict transformation; peace journalism; democracy and human rights; multi-culturalism; empowering civil society; gender and peace; people-centred, sustainable development; post-war reconstruction, rehabilitation, reconciliation and healing; and, environment and ecology.
