The Anti-Empire Report
Some things you need to know before the world ends

William Blum
I'm often told by readers of their encounters with Americans who support
the outrages of US foreign policy no matter what facts are presented to
them, no matter what arguments are made, no matter how much the
government's statements are shown to be false. They include amongst their
number those who still believe that Iraq had a direct involvement in the
events of September 11, that Saddam Hussein had close ties t! o al Qaeda,
and/or that weapons of mass destruction were indeed found in Iraq after the
2003 invasion. My advice is to forget such people. They would support the
outrages even if the government came to their homes, seized their first
born, and hauled them away screaming, as long as the government assured
them it was essential to fighting terrorism (or communism)...

Execlusive: The Head of Mosul’s Dominican Monastery Talks to the Iraqi League
:: media bureau::iraqi league ::
...Sister Mary is a distinguished and highly learned Iraqi with a great
deal of wisdom and wide awareness of history and current affairs. Fluent in
French, the smile never seems to depart from her face, but yet she
vocalises her pain as she talks the IL about the US occupation of her
beloved country Iraq. She says 'Iraq has never been through harder times,
and has never seen a greater criminal than the U! S occupation which came
to destroy a civilisation in its totality, basing its invasion on lies and
deceit in order to justify its despicable crime. It’s the occupation’s
deliberate policies that are directly responsible for the ugly sectarian
and ethnic violence; it is trying to convey to the world the notion that
Iraqis are unable to co-exist as brothers as has been for centuries. I
cannot understand how some Iraqis are working with the occupation against
their people and their country’...

Iraq is now an American colony
Truth About Iraqis
For those of you who have doubted the intentions of the Bush administration
and the US military in Iraq, recent testimonials have uncovered that Iraq
is now an American colony with a permanent military presence. When Iraqis
protested at the illegal invasion and occupation of their country, we were
told that the US military would remove itself once requested to do so by
the Iraqi people...

God Forgive America
Kurt Nimmo
Instead of "God Bless America," we should put "God Forgive America"
bumperstickers on our cars. Americans, as participants in horrendous war
crimes, should ask for forgiveness. America is a killer nation—not only do
we kill Iraqis and Afghans, but we are in the process of killing ourselves.
"After forming microscopic and submicroscopic insoluble Uranium oxide
particles on the battlefield, they remain suspended in air and travel
around the earth as a radioactive component of atmosphe! ric dust,
contaminating the environment, indiscriminately killing, maiming and
causing disease in all living things where rain, snow and moisture remove
it from the atmosphere," writes independent scientist and international
expert on radiation, Leuren Moret"...

Lynchings and Holy Wars
Zeyad, Healing Iraq
Black-clad Mahdi army militiamen drag the body of Sheikh Ghazi Al-Zoba’i,
the Imam and preacher of the Al-Sabbar mosque around a street in
Husseiniya, a mixed suburb north of Baghdad. I reported this lynching
incident during the sectarian attacks that followed the Samarra shrine
bombing. This is an extremely disturbing cell phone video clip of the whole
scene. Someone shouts: "drag the Wahhabi," while another describes him as a
"bastard." They pause a moment to search f! or a wire, then they dump him
on the side of the road. Another militiaman suggests they bury him. "What
do you mean bury him?" the gang leader snaps back with indignation. "Leave
him here to the dogs." Then they joke about his underwear and cover the
corpse with a cardboard.

Sectarian Internal Migration Plagues Iraq
Samir Haddad, IOL Correspondent
Faced with simmering sectarian tensions and the looming prospect of a civil
war, thousands of Sunni and Shiite families are fleeing their homes and
moving to areas where their respective sects are in majority. Some 2425
Sunni families have migrated from Shiite-dominated provinces such as
Karbala, An-Najaf, Al-Qadisiyah and Babil, according to statement by the
Ministry of Migration and Emigrants, a copy of which was obtained by
IslamOnline.n! et. They have moved to cities such as Fallujah, Samarra,
Al-Latyfiah and Al-Mahmoudyah, where Sunnis are in majority, added the
statement...

administration official who unmasked the identity of an undercover CIA
operative to Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Bob Woodward in mid-June 2003
and conservative columnist Robert Novak a month later. The identity of this
official is shrouded in secrecy. In fact, his name, government status, and
the substance of his conversation with Woodward about the underc! over
officer are under a protective seal in US District Court for the District

Volunteers for Endless War
Cindy Sheehan, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Being on the road constantly and being in the trenches for peace leaves me
little time (and, if truth be told, little inclination) to keep up with
George's dishonest and often incoherent ramblings; nonetheless, this week,
two of his more calculated comments caught my attention. The first comment
was on the White House lawn on Sunday, March 19th, the 3rd anniversary of
the invasion. By the way, the White House website has entitled this spe!
ech "The President's Remarks on the Third Anniversary of the Liberation!!!!
(italics and exclamation points added by me) of Iraq"...

to launch meetings and talks on Iraq as soon as possible. "I hope the US
and Iran will start their meetings and talks as soon as possible and the
knot in relations between the two countries would be untied through the

Blaming the Media for Bad War News
Norman Solomon, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Top officials in the Bush administration have often complained that news
coverage of Iraq focuses on negative events too much and fails to devote
enough attention to positive developments. Yet the White House has rarely
picked direct fights with US media outlets during this war. For the most
part, President Bush leaves it to others to scapegoat the media. Karl
Rove's spin strategy is heavily reliant on surrogates. They're likely to !
escalate blame-the-media efforts as this year goes on...

The no-fly big lie
Eli Stephens’s Left I on the News
George Bush spoke again (sigh!) yesterday, repeating his recent (and
frequent) lie about Iraq (known by its first name, "Saddam") having refused
to "disclose" and "disarm" (although he temporarily dropped the one about
"denying" the insptors). But he added another one, one of the traditional
American big lies: "He also was firing on our aircraft. They were enforcing
a no-fly zone, United Nations no-fly zone, the world had spoken, and he had
taken shots at Bri! tish and U.S. pilots." Now I know, and you probably
know, that the "no-fly zones" were imposed by the United States (and its
junior flunkies across the "pond"), not by the United Nations...

Iraqi Exile Speaks Out Against the Targeting of Gay Iraqis by Shia Death Squads
Democracy Now!
...Shiite death squads in Iraq have been systematically targeting gay
Iraqis for persecution and execution. The attacks follow a death-to-gays
fatwa issued by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani last October. In a question
and answer section of his website, Sistani says homosexuality is
"forbidden" and calls for the killing of gays in the "worst, most severe
way." The story comes in this week's issue of Gay City News. It rep! orts
that the Badr Corps have heeded Sistani's call and have been targeting gay
Iraqis. The Badr Corps is the military arm of the Iranian-backed Supreme
Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a powerful Shia group that is
the largest political formion in Iraq's Shia community...

A Stone in the Lake
John M. Peters
Last week’s Operation Swarmer was ballyhooed as the largest U.S. combat air
operation in Iraq since 2003. Designed to take the Iraqi insurgents by
surprise and wipe out the obstacle to peace in Iraq. (Seems I have heard
that line before.) Utilizing a succession of military and civilian
bureaucrats, Washington has spent three years trying to impose its
blueprint upon an increasingly resistant Iraqi population. The world’s most
expensive military has been deployed to try to force ! political change and
define the boundaries of a conflict which knows no boundaries. After three
years, Washington is farther than ever from its illegal goals. Take
Operation Swarmer...

The War Lovers
John Pilger
..."There’s no doubt," said Matt Frei, the BBC’s man in America, "that the
desire to bring good, to bring American values to the rest of the world,
and especially now to the Middle East . . . is now increasingly tied up
with military power." Frei said that on 13 April 2003, after George W Bush
had launched "Shock and Awe" on a defenceless Iraq. Two years later, after
a rampant, racist, woefully trained and ill-disciplined army of occupation
had brought "American values" of sectarianism,! death squads, chemical
attacks, attacks with uranium-tipped shells and cluster bombs, Frei
described the notorious 82nd Airborne as "the heroes of Tikrit."...

Chavez: U.S. Has Been Routed in Iraq
CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER, The Associated Press
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Tuesday that U.S. troops have been
routed by a strong resistance movement in Iraq, but haven't pulled out
because officials in Washington won't acknowledge defeat. The United States
would also suffer a tremendous military defeat if the Bush administration
decided to invade Iran, Chavez told a group of foreign diplomats and
government supporters at the Miraflores Presidential Palace. "The U.S. emp!
ire is defeated in Iraq, they just don't want to admit it," Chavez said to
rousing applause...

No escape for fearful Palestinians in Iraq
Maher Nazih, Reuters
Reports of kidnappings, murder and persecution of Palestinian refugees in
Iraq have forced many to try to flee, but for most there is nowhere else to
go. Jordan's closure of its borders with Iraq on Sunday to prevent the
entry of 89 Palestinians seeking sanctuary from Iraq's carnage shows the
refugees have few options. Sheikh Ayman Mustafa, a 33-year-old Palestinian
cleric who lives in one of the rundown apartment buildings in Baghdad that
are home t! o thousands of refugees, said an explosion of sectarian
violence had made it too risky to stay in Iraq (...) Amnesty International
said Jordan was obliged to allow the Palestinians over the border.
"Palestinians have been killed in Iraq and they will risk death if they
return. We also call on armed groups to stop these killings," Nicole
Choueiry, the human rights group's spokeswoman, said by telephone from
London. "This period is very difficult for the Palestinians. They are
kidnapped and killed and tortured," said a Palestinian diplomat in Baghdad
who asked not to be named...

58 Dead As Violence Continues in Iraq
STEVEN R. HURST, AP
The U.S. military spokesman in Iraq asserted Thursday that major violence
is largely confined to just three of the country's 18 provinces, but
fighting there raged on with at least 58 people killed in execution-style
slayings, bombings and gunbattles. For the third straight day, Sunni
insurgents hit a major police and jail facility - this time with a suicide
car bombing that killed 25 in central Baghdad. The attacker detonated his
explosives at the entranc! e to the Interior Ministry Major Crimes unit in
the Karradah district, killing 10 civilians and 15 policemen, authorities

Anatomy of a Rebel Strike
An attack northeast of Baghdad, which freed 33 prisoners and killed 17
security officers, was a bold and highly coordinated operation.
Richard Boudreaux and John Johnson Jr., Los Angeles Times
Since last year, the city of Muqdadiya had not been considered especially
vulnerable. There were shootings and bombings from time to time, but police
would round up suspected rebels in nearby villages, as they did last
weekend, and haul them to cells in the downtown courthouse. ! Then at dawn
Tuesday, masked men came to break the detainees out. Descending from a
dozen cars and pickup trucks laden with mortars and grenades, they
surrounded the judicial compound and blasted away, killing at least 17
policemen and guards and freeing 33 prisoners in one of Iraq's boldest
insurgent raids in months...
