Syrian thought experiment
Xymphora
There are apparently still a few stragglers who refuse to accept the fact
that the American multi-trillion dollar mistake in Iraq was made under the
influence of Israeli agents in the White House (...). Of course there were
many other reasons for the attack, and the politics of empire requires that
many interest groups have to be serviced when such a major action is taken.
No one can argue that the Israeli agents were the only reason for the
attack. The Israeli agents were not a! sufficient condition for the attack,
but they were a necessary condition. The attack would never have occurred
but for the actions of those working for Israel...

The Iraq war debate in the US
Truth About Iraqis
...In conclusion, the debate raging in the US is a shadow of what it could
really be and is underserved by US censorship. Not enough information is
made to the reader/viewer who mistakenly believes he/she is informed. But
now, with the wiretapping scandal in the GOP, quick on the heels of the
DeLay scandal coinciding with the Abramoff scandal, and sugar-topping the
AIPAC investigation, America may finally be waking up. Americans don't like
to be fooled. When they g! ive trust to something or someone, it is
sancrosanct. To have that trust betrayed is not so small a transgression...

The US-Iran ‘crisis’ – it’s the oil stupid
William Bowles
...Anybody who doesn’t think control of energy sources is at the root of
USUK actions in Iraq and elsewhere is suffering a serious (but hopefully
treatable) delusional disease of denial. Even the most cursory exploration
of the 20th century reveals the centrality of oil to pretty well every
event of any significance, and in no small part goes a long way toward
explaining why the corporate/state media won’t go near the subject with a
length of oil-drilling ! pipe—except to deride the idea...

Baath Party Statement
The fifteenth anniversary of the Eternal Mother of all Battles: The ongoing
confrontation, confirms the legitimacy and the importance of the Armed
Resistance in the Great Confrontation.
The Arab Baath Socialist Party
Since the night of the sixteenth over the seventeenth January 1991 and
until this very moment, the Baath has and still is undergoing a direct,
multiple and repetitive military confrontation with the US imperialism, its
allies and its stooges. The Baath through its pat! riotic, national, human,
civilization and ideological ranks was always and still is aware of being
targeted by enemies of Iraq and the Arab Nation because its renaissance
project from one hand, and because its holding on principals, its
continuing struggle to put in practice, defend its renaissance project and
its Jihad to rout the aggression and the Occupation, to safeguard the
unity, the freedom, and the Arab identity of Iraq, and confirm its
historical right to take back the usurped and amputated portions of Iraq...

War's Stunning Price Tag
Linda Bilmes and Joseph Stiglitz, Los Angeles Times
Last week, at the annual meeting of the American Economic Assn., we
presented a new estimate for the likely cost of the war in Iraq. We
suggested that the final bill will be much higher than previously reckoned
— between $1 trillion and $2 trillion, depending primarily on how much
longer our troops stay. Putting that into perspective, the highest-grossing
movie of all time, "Titanic," earned $1.8 billion worldwide — about half
the cost t! he U.S. incurs in Iraq every week...

American who advised Pentagon says he wrote for magazine that found forged
Niger documents
Larisa Alexandrovna
A controversial neoconservative who occasionally consulted for the Bush
Defense Department has confirmed that he was a contributor to the Italian
magazine Panorama, whose reporter first came across forged documents which
purported that Iraq was seeking to obtain uranium from Niger. The bogus
documents became the basis for the infamous sixteen words in President
Bush's 2003 State of the Union Address, in ! which he detailed his case for
war. Their origin has been one of the most persistent mysteries in how
American intelligence on Iraq was so wrong...

Interview with Michel Chossudovsky
Monday Brownbagger
...We have to start the challenge at all levels, municipal, provincial,
federal, international and we ultimately have to educate the public. We
have to confront the media-the media is complicit in this project because
if it were doing its job it would at least be informing people of the
devastating impacts of a nuclear holocaust and it would be explaining to
people the use of tactical nuclear weapons means nuclear war. There is no
other way of saying it...

Raw Story

in early 2002 that the sale of uranium from Niger to Iraq was "unlikely"

according to a secret memo that was recently declassified by the State
Department, the NEW YORK TIMES' Eric Lichtblau will report Wednesday...

Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice.
...The puppet governor of the southern Iraqi city of al-Basrah, Muhammad
al-Wa’ili, has accused Iran of helping to smuggle Iraqi oil out of the
country and of repeated attacks on US-installed Iraqi puppet border guards.
The puppet official made the accusation after Iranian coastal border guards
killed an Iraqi puppet coast guardsman and kidnapped nine more o! f them in
the course of a confrontation which occurred when a force of Iraqi puppet
coastal border guards pursued a ship that was smuggling Iraqi oil out of

Tomgram: De la Vega, Does the President Really Know Best?
Tom Engelhardt & Elizabeth de la Vega
In every way they could imagine -- unnoticed in broad daylight and in the
darkness of eternal secrecy -- the President and his top officials have
been hardest at work not at governing the country but at bulking up
presidential powers. This, it now seems, was the centerpiece of an
audacious law-breaking plan -- or even, you might say, a law-breaking
vision -- involving illegal war, illegal treatment of captives, illegal!
detentions, illegal spying on citizens, and so on -- in which global and
domestic power would be nailed down for a generation...

Shortage of fuel resulting in prohibitive prices
IRIN
Ongoing shortages of fuel and constant attacks on oil refineries are
causing abrupt increases in official fuel prices as well as price hikes on
the black market in the capital, Baghdad. "We have been suffering from a
huge loss of money due to the attacks on our oil refineries that have been
costing the ministry around US $22 million dollars per day," Salam Jihad,
spokesperson for the oil ministry, said. According to Jihad, fuel prices
have to be increased to h! elp cover the ensuing costs. He said there could
be as much as a 100 percent increase in current prices until the end of

Surface-to-Air Missile Downed U.S. Chopper in Iraq
Attack Has Ominous Implications, Marking First Time Insurgents Shoot Down
U.S. Aircraft With Missile
ABC News
Pentagon officials tell ABC News they believe Iraqi insurgents used a
Russian-made SA-7 surface-to-air missile to shoot down a U.S. military
helicopter on Monday. The AH-64 Apache crashed north of Baghdad, killing
the two crew members. It was the third American chopper to go down in 10
days. It's a troubling new development because ther! e are hundreds -- and
by some estimates thousands -- of SA-7 missiles that are unaccounted for in
Iraq. The weapons had been part of Saddam Hussein's arsenal, much of which
was looted after the invasion. But until now, insurgents had never
successfully used them against an American aircraft...

Rome prosecutors to charge U.S. soldier with murdering Italian agent in Iraq
AP
Italian prosecutors investigating the killing of an Italian secret service
agent at a checkpoint in Iraq plan to charge a U.S. soldier with murder and
attempted murder, Italian media reported Tuesday. U.S. gunfire killed
Nicola Calipari near the checkpoint March 4 as the agent was heading to
Baghdad airport in a car with an Italian journalist who had just been
released after being held hostage by militants. The ANSA and Apcom news
age! ncies reported Tuesday that prosecutors planned to charge the soldier
with murdering Calipari and attempting to murder the agent driving the car
as well as the journalist, Giuliana Sgrena, who were both wounded during
the incident...

A Call to America: Dare to Make a Principled Stand
Monica Benderman, OrbStandard
...Americans are deserting their duty to their country, and their
Constitution, every time a member of government, a member of the military
or a member of our community uses fear-based threats to cause them to run
away rather than stand for what they believe. Americans desert their
country and the foundations upon which it was built every time they believe
it is another's responsibility to bring about the changes necessary to keep
ou! r country strong; every time they run and hide to keep from facing the
challenge of standing against a corrupt policy or law. Government
institutions, community projects, and military policies will remain corrupt
as long as Americans are willing to avoid their responsibilities...

... One of our nation's most highly decorated combat veterans offers his
thoughts on the current war against Iraq, including why "we should get out
fast!" Brigadier General Andrew Gatsis is one of our nation's most highly
decorated veterans (...) The general is angry at what the president and his
administration have done. They originally claimed the attack on Iraq was
needed to fight terrorism and now insist that the effort is needed! "to
build democracy" in Iraq. He wants to know: "Who are we to tell the Iraqi
people what kind of government they should have?" "We invaded a country
that posed no threat to us," says the general. "What's different about what
we have done in Iraq and what Hitler did when he sent his forces into
Czechoslovakia in 1939?...
