Release Tareq Aziz and All the Detainees in Occupied Iraq
Ibrahim Ebeidd
...The International Red Cross Committee was informed many times about the
ill treatment and torture of the Detainees in Iraq but no stand was taken
by this institution. The INCRC instead of exposing the terrorizing act of
the occupation forces in Iraq took the stand of the aggressors by keeping
silence. The members of the legitimate Leadership of Iraq succumbed to
severe torture and inhumane treatment. The President of Iraq was mistreated
a! nd tortured, also the Vice President, Mr. Taha Yasin Ramadan, had to
treat his wounds with water and salt, no one was spared the abuse of the
malpractice of Bush’s democracy. Some of the detainees died from torture or
by depriving them medical care or good nourishment. Some became very frail
and dying in their cells that are not fit for animals and less for human
beings such as Tareq Aziz. Mr. Tareq Aziz, the legitimate Deputy Prime
Minister of the legal Government of Iraq is no exception. His health is
deteriorating very fast and rapidly he is approaching his death in a small
cell, that according to his Lawyer, is not fit for dogs...

Reinventing Sharon, Tom Friedman style
Mike Whitney
It’s rare when the New York Times Pulitzer-toting pundit, Tom Friedman,
diverges from his favorite theme of globalization. But, when he does, it’s
usually to scold the victims of Israeli occupation for failing to adjust to
their ever-shrinking landscape. In Thursday’s column, Friedman rattled off
a few fatherly reprimands to the errant Palestinians while offering advice
on how to remake the Arab world. "Is there an Arab Sharon?" Freidman
wonders; implying that p! eace would be possible if only the Palestinians
could produce leader similar to Ariel Sharon (...) For Friedman to imply
that an "Arab Sharon" would resolve this bitter multi-generational conflict
shows his disregard for the facts as well as history. What Friedman calls
"the positive side of (Sharon’s) legacy" is a tidy bit of revisionism that
borders on the absurd. If Friedman chooses to demonstrate his adulation of
power and brutality, that’s his business, but Sharon never distanced
himself from his murderous career. Friedman has no right to do it for him...

I Didn't Know This About Saddam Hussein
Phillybits
...Within a period of just a few years, the state provided some social
services to Iraqi people unprecedented in other Middle Eastern countries.
Saddam initiated and controlled the "National Campaign for the Eradication
of Illiteracy" and the campaign for "Compulsory Free Education in Iraq,"
and largely under his auspices, the government established universal free
schooling up to the highest education levels; hundreds of thousands learned
to read in the years fol! lowing the initiation of the program. The
government also supported families of soldiers, granted free
hospitalization to everyone, and gave subsidies to farmers. Iraq created
one of the best public-health systems in the Middle East, earning Saddam an
award from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO)...

Iraq Interior Minister Okayed Torture: Ex-General
Islamonline.net
Iraq's Interior Minister Bayan Jabr Solagh and senior officials at his
ministry have condoned torture and abuses of detainees, a ministry's
whistle-blower who was in charge of the special forces unit said in new
statements. Muntazar Al-Samarrai, who fled Iraq for Jordan last year, said
an interior ministry squad has been set up at Solagh's orders, which
intimidated Iraqis, mostly Sunnis, and arrested scores without court
warrants...

Nuclear War: Depleted Uranium
Jack's "Straight-Speak"
...The use of, and continued use of depleted uranium weapons—bombs,
missiles and bullets—is nuclear war in no uncertain of terms. And those
within our government and Department of War know this, also in no uncertain
of terms. In 1964 this government and War Hawks knew what Agent Orange
usage in Vietnam would do to human beings—poison and kill them—not to
mention salting the earth. They also are well aware of what they are doing
with using Depleted Uranium Weap! ons. Lies, deceptions and constant
cover-up are the order of the day by the White House, Congress, the Courts,
the Veterans Administration, the Department of War and the Pentagon on just
how dangerous and harmful depleted uranium is...

Iraqi journalist tells his story in American prison
Baghdad Dweller
Ali Omar Abrahem al-Mashhadani is an Iraqi journalist arrested or better
say "abducted" from his home and family by US occupation forces since
August, 2005. Ali is released today after five months without any charge, I
found this Arabic interview with Ali explaining his experience in different
American prisons in Iraq (...) For five months I have been move to
different prisons, I tried to keep my strength and hide my weakness from
the American! soldiers, I tried to support my fellow (brothers) citizens
who imprisoned with me in case they show some weakness. Now I am free all
what I want to do is to be alone and cry as much as I can ...

US bombing in northern Pakistan: an act of imperialist recklessness
James Cogan, WSWS
The US air strike carried out on January 13 on the isolated village of
Damadola, near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, was as reckless as it
was criminal. At least 18 civilians were killed, including five women and
five children, further inflaming already high political and social tensions
inside Pakistan. Under international law, the strike was an act of war. The
Pakistani government of President Pervez Musharraf has collabo! rated with
the US takeover of Afghanistan and its broader international aggression,
but it has never formally granted the US military the right to cross the
border and carry out operations on Pakistani soil or airspace...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 16 January 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice
...In a dispatch posted at 5:10pm Mecca time Monday afternoon, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that the official spokesman for he Iraqi puppet army in
al-Fallujah, Nahi al-Ka'bi had told a press conference in the government
office building in the city Monday morning that 1,000 additional US troops
were going to arrive in the city in the next few days in order to re!
inforce the US and Iraqi puppet units already operating there(...) To
respond to this increase in Resistance activity in al-Fallujah, al-Ka'bi
told the press, the reinforced American and Iraqi puppet forces are
planning to launch raids and searches in every house and neighborhood of
the city, in the hopes of arresting Resistance fighters and anyone who
might be helping them. At the Monday morning press conference, al-Ka'bi
declined to give further details on the impending offensive against the
al-Fallujah population. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent, however, noted
that all the four entrances to the city had been closed as of dawn on
Monday, preventing local residents who wanted to leave from getting out.
The city remained sealed off as of the time of reporting...

Tyrant in the White House
Bush Crosses the Rubicon
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
...President Bush has used "signing statements" hundreds of times to
vitiate the meaning of statutes passed by Congress. In effect, Bush is
vetoing the bills he signs into law by asserting unilateral authority as
commander-in-chief to bypass or set aside the laws he signs. For example,
Bush has asserted that he has the power to ignore the McCain amendment
against torture, to ignore the law that requires a warrant to spy on
Americans,! to ignore the prohibition against indefinite detention without
charges or trial, and to ignore the Geneva Conventions to which the US is
signatory. In effect, Bush is asserting the powers that accrued to Hitler
in 1933...

Top judge replaced in Saddam trial
Mariam Karouny
The Iraqi court trying Saddam Hussein named a replacement on Monday for the
chief judge after failing to persuade the present lead magistrate to
withdraw his resignation, said chief prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi. Judge
Rizgar Amin, who asked to be excused last week after complaining of
government interference in the case, would not attend the next hearing on
January 24, Moussawi said; his deputy on the five-member judging panel
would preside in his place...

Tears of a Neocon
And Now the Good News, From Daniel Pipes
JOHN WALSH
Want to hear some good news? Try neo-con Daniel Pipes. When he weeps, we
cheer, so check out his piece "My Gloom: Back to September 10" (...) For
Pipes the occupation of Iraq and the occupation of the West Bank are both
running out of steam, and in his eyes that is a tragedy. He is worried sick
that peace may be breaking out all over. But even if we are far, far from
that happy day, we can at least rejoice in one neocon's misery over! that
prospect and draw some hope from his gloom...

Martin Luther King and Iraq
Truth About Iraqis
...But while King's memory is celebrated, his warning and his teachings are
for the most part forgotten. Most people, if they stretch their minds,
remember his "I have a dream" speech. The media plays this in music videos,
news clips, documentaries and films. But other speeches, which are more
critical of US role in the world, are overlooked (...) What would King have

The media on Feinstein on Alito; Feinstein (and McCain) on Iran (and Israel)
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
...But what Feinstein had to say is even more instructive. George Bush
recently let loose on people who think that the invasion of Iraq had
anything to do with Israel. Well, here's what Feinstein has to say about
the "threat" from Iran: "I think Iran has much more opportunity to create
devastation in the Middle East than Iraq at this time. I think it's a very
serious threat. I think this new president! of Iran is very difficult to
predict. He clearly holds very radical, almost fanatic views certainly with
respect to Israel. I don't think it's a stretch to say that if the Iranians
had a nuclear missile that this president might well use it against
Israel." So after the U.S. attacks Iran, let's not hear any nonsense about
how it had nothing to do with Israel...

How the West and the West Bank Were Won
Jason Miller
As I write to you from the heart of the Midwest, the epicenter of one of
history's most egregious and shameful genocides, I watch with horror and
moral revulsion as the US military industrial complex underwrites and
supports a similar act of social extermination in the Middle East. CNN
informed me yesterday that the mighty US military had killed eighteen
civilians in Pakistan due to "bad intelligence" in the ongoing "war on
terror". As an ally in this "war on t! error", Pakistani leaders were
justifiably upset. Can you imagine the repercussions if Pakistan killed
eighteen American civilians on US soil in a "strike against terrorists"
based on "bad intelligence"? There would certainly be hell to pay. Yet in
this instance, the Pakistanis will be lucky to receive an apology...

'Marshall Plan' for Iraq Fades
Doug Smith and Borzou Daragahi, LATimes Staff Writers
After more than 2 1/2 years of sputtering reconstruction work, the United
States' "Marshall Plan" to rebuild this war-torn country is drawing to a
close this year with much of its promise unmet and no plans to extend its
funding. The $18.6 billion approved by Congress in 2003 will be spent by
the end of this year, officials here say. Foreign governments have given
only a fraction of the billions they pledged two years ago. With t! he
country still a shambles, U.S. officials are promoting a tough-love vision
of reconstruction that puts the burden on the Iraqi people...

You Approve of Domestic Spying?
Then Start With Skull & Bones!
A TvNewsLIES Proposal
Let’s get it straight, you actually believe that the government has the
right to spy at will. You really think there’s nothing wrong with listening
in on domestic phone conversations or intercepting personal e-mail or cell
calls. You really have no qualms about bypassing the courts and warrants to
spy on Americans who might have expressed opposition to the invasion of a
militarily castrated nation? You bought into the idea ! that secret
government spying will keep Americans safe. And you have no problem with
spying on grass roots peace organizations whose members walk around with
signs demanding a safer and friendlier world? All right then, if spying is
the way to go, why not snoop in the right places?...

JASON STRAZIUSO, AP

Army that have a two-person crew include the AH-64 Apache and the OH-58

Iraq election final results on Friday
Reuters
Iraq's Electoral Commission annulled results from 227 ballot boxes today,

said this would have little effect on results already announced. Final
results—based on tallies from some 31,000 ballot boxes—would be published
on Friday, said Electoral Commissioner Adel al-Lamy, adding these would be
in line with partial, provisional counts given some weeks ago...
