URGENT APPEAL TO SAVE IRAQ'S ACADEMICS
Read and sign the petition
BRussells Tribunal
A little known aspect of the tragedy engulfing Iraq is the systematic
liquidation of the country's academics. Even according to conservative
estimates, over 250 educators have been assassinated, and many hundreds
more have disappeared. With thousands fleeing the country in fear for their
lives, not only is Iraq undergoing a major brain drain, the secular middle
class - which has refused to be co-opted by the US occupation ! - is being
decimated, with far-reaching consequences for the future of Iraq...

Neocons Considered Planting WMD Evidence in Iraq?
Gary Leupp, www.dissidentvoice.org
A recent Raw Story report by Larissa Alexandrovna suggests that the
notorious Office of Special Plans didn’t just stovepipe cherry-picked
"intelligence" to the White House and press. It also sent teams into Iraq
after the invasion began, which, after it became apparent that there were
no abundant WMDs, examined the possibility of planting such weapons in
order to help the resident avoid embarrassment. Citing "[t]hree U.S. inte!
lligence sources and a source close to the United Nations Security
Council," Alexandrovna indicates that the OSP planned "off book" missions
that were dispatched by Stephen Cambone, Defense Department intelligence
chief, from March 2003. (Cambone now occupies the # 3 post in the Defense
Department.)...

A Letter from an Arab Citizen to an American Mother
Mohammed Zedan, Albasrah.net
Bush and other criminals talk about our Iraqi civilization, so it is
important as Arabs to teach the American people about our love and
humanity. For that reason I hope that whoever has the ability write in
English informs the American mother, the American soldiers and all the
Americans the words of justice and truth. Tell then that we are innocent or
we die with pride, and we support all the acts that are carried out by the
Iraqi an! d Palestinian insurgency. We would love to hear that our letters
are turned into internationally known songs in the American language. Below
is a simple letter written by me to an American mother, it not a poem,
purely because I am not a poet. Long live the brave Iraqi insurgency; alone
it represents our Iraqi society...

GI Special 4A2: Prisoners Against The War 2 - January 9, 2006
www.militaryproject.org
In the week leading up to the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday, GI
Special will lead with statements written by members of Prisoners Against
The War. Organized by Stanley Howard and five other imprisoned members of
the Military Project at Illinois' Statesville Prison, Prisoners Against The
War breaks new ground. There has been no organization like this in recent
American history. That may be an understatement, since no r! ecord of a
similar organization has been found at any point in American history.
Prisoners Against The War hopes to inspire other prisoners, both in
civilian and military prisons, to organize their own chapters, and spread
the movement nation-wide...

30,000? No. 100,000? No.
How Many Iraqis Have Died Since the US Invasion in 2003?
ANDREW COCKBURN, CounterPunch
President Bush's off-hand summation last month of the number of Iraqis who
have so far died as a result of our invasion and occupation as "30,000,
more or less" was quite certainly an under-estimate. The true number is
probably hitting around 180,000 by now, with a possibility, as we shall
see, that it has reached as high as half a million. But even Bush's number
was too much for his handlers! to allow. Almost as soon as he finished
speaking, they hastened to downplay the presidential figure as
"unofficial", plucked by the commander in chief from "public estimates"...

Terrorists kidnap journalist in Iraq
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Guardian Films (UK) is investigating claims that tens of millions of
dollars worth of Iraqi funds held by the Americans and British have been
misused or misappropriated. A few days after they asked American
authorities for permission for an Iraqi reporter to interview them about
their findings, here's what happened: American troops in Baghdad yesterday
blasted their way into the home of an Iraqi journalist working for the
Guardian and Chann! el 4, firing bullets into the bedroom where he was
sleeping with his wife and children. Ali Fadhil, who two months ago won the
Foreign Press Association young journalist of the year award, was hooded
and taken for questioning...

No one cares about Iraqis
Truth About Iraqis
For six days I have been bombarded by relentless coverage of the 12 miners
who died in West Virginia. Fine. It's a tragic loss. Cover it and move on.
But no. In those six days we have been shown hour by hour reports of
happiness turned to grief, what the miners ate, what they thought of before
they died, how the doctors could have misdiagnosed (...) On and on and on.
CNN showed half a dozen special reports on the issue. And when they weren't
doing that, they were epit! omizing Ariel Sharon, the Butcher of Beirut, as
a courageous man of peace for pulling out of Gaza while his fighter jets
bombed the fuck out of it every now and then. During that very same period,
30 US soldiers and Marines were killed in Iraq - 17 in just one day. More
than 200 Iraqis were also killed in that period. US generals reported the
war was going terribly. Some warned of civil war. Others warned of the
danger of the murderous Shia Badr and SCIRI militias. And then another
report comes out that the war will cost between 1 and 2 trillion dollars in
real expenditure. Nothing. These news items are buried beyond reach of the
American viewer, reader...

United States Raids Association of Muslim Scholars
Brian Conley, Alive in Baghdad
In another brilliant move to curb the anti-occupation resistance in Iraq,
the United States military raided the AMS at their headquarters at 3am
Sunday morning. The Association of Muslim Scholars is affiliated with
several of the Sunni Arabs now endeavoring to engage in the political
process in Iraq. In fact, the secretary general of the AMS, Harith
Al’Dhari, once had his home raided by United States’ forces seeking to
arrest him...!

Evidence Allegedly Found of Secret CIA Prisons in Europe
AFP
Swiss intelligence services are allegedly in possession of proof that the
US has detained terror suspects in secret prisons in various European
countries. The CIA is irritated. A fax sent by the Egyptian foreign
ministry to its embassy in London stated that more than 20 Iraqis and
Afghans had been questioned at a US-run base in Romania, a Swiss newspaper
reported on Sunday...

MPs leaked Bush plan to hit al-Jazeera
David Leigh and Richard Norton-Taylor, The Guardian
Two Labour MPs have defied the Official Secrets Act by passing on the
contents of a secret British document revealing how President George Bush
wanted to bomb the Arabic TV station, al-Jazeera. The document, a
transcript of a meeting between Mr Bush and Tony Blair in April 2004 when
the prime minister expressed concern about US military tactics in Iraq, is
already the subject of an unprecedented official secrets prosecutio! n in
Britain, against an aide to one of the MPs and another man...

Iraqis receive indoctrination and training in Iran
Sharon Behn, The Washington Times
Shi'ite clerics are recruiting young Iraqis to go to neighboring Iran for
political indoctrination and militia training, said the uncle of one young
man who recently returned from a one-month session. Upon the return of the
young man -- whose name has been withheld from this article to protect his
family -- he was recruited into the armed wing of the pro-Iranian Supreme
Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) political pa! rty, the uncle
said.

Media's War Images Delude instead of Inform
Norman Solomon, t r u t h o u t
The picture was perfect. It provided a moving portrait, an image that
journalists called "iconic." It was true to the moment. Yet the photograph
was deceiving in a way that media images often are - showing us what's more
apparent than real. One day, during the second week of November 2004,
millions of Americans saw the photo (...) On the third day of 2006, when
the man in the iconic photo returned to the CBS airwaves on "The Early
Show,! " this time the mood was more somber. "Blake Miller made it home
from the war," co-host Harry Smith reported. "But like many of his
comrades, he wasn't able to completely put it behind him. While on duty
during the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, Blake suffered from symptoms of
posttraumatic stress disorder and was granted an honorable discharge from
the Marines." (... But in sharp contrast to the media enthusiasm that
greeted him back in November 2004, there was no major media coverage in the
days after "The Early Show" revealed on January 3 that he's suffering from
posttraumatic stress...

Helicopter crash death toll was 8, not 12
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Good news? Actually no, bad news. It's a trick answer. Because you see it
turns out that four of the 12 people who died in that Black Hawk "crash"
(in quotes because the U.S. military still claims it doesn't know whether
it was shot down or not) were American civilians, not members of the
military, and hence won't be included in those tallies of "American" dead,
won't be called "heroes," and won't be remembered by anyone except their
fami! lies and friends...

``the greatest terrorist in the world'' on Sunday and said millions of
Americans support the socialist revolution of Venezuelan leader Hugo
Chavez. Belafonte led a delegation of Americans including the actor Danny
Glover and the Princeton University scholar Cornel West that met the
Venezuelan president for more than six hours late Saturday. Some in the

Iraqi oil minister resigns amid protests and economic chaos
Peter Symonds
The events surrounding the resignation of Iraqi oil minister Ibrahim Bahr
Uloom last Monday provided a revealing glimpse into the economic and social
chaos created by the US occupation of the country. The immediate trigger
for the replacement of Uloom was the government’s decision to impose huge
increases in fuel prices on December 19, just days after national
elections. Feeling the pressure of public protests and anger, Uloom
criticised th! e government for worsening the position of the poor and for
being "anti-democratic". He was compelled to take leave, then stand down
altogether...

Sheehan Urge Supporters to Take Action
DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer
Activist Cindy Sheehan told supporters at a peace forum Saturday that
troops would get out of Iraq if millions of U.S. citizens took the simple
step that she did outside President Bush's vacation home last summer.
"Anybody could do what we did in Crawford, Texas. We just went down and sat
down," Sheehan told the crowd of several hundred people, with Academy
Award-winning actor Sean Penn in the front row. She urged them to lose
their apat! hy and do something...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Sunday, 8 January 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
...In a dispatch posted at 7:45pm Mecca time Sunday night, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported medical sources in the city of al-Hillah, south of
Baghdad, as saying hat US troops on Sunday had forcibly kidnapped and raped
a nine-year-old girl, abducting her as she came out of her school after
classes. The correspondent for Mafkarat al! -Islam reported a doctor in
al-Hillah General Hospital who asked not to be identified as saying that
the little girl was found four hours after the criminal attack, unconscious
with blood all over her face and legs...
