UNLIKELY BEDFELLOWS
Malcom Lagauche
Most people forgot about Iraq’s plight after March 1991. After all, the
U.S. had just kicked the Iraqis out of Kuwait and there was an embargo
affixed. Few realized just how severe the embargo would turn out and also
that if Iraq, which it did, acquiesced to the terms of the embargo it would
not be lifted as long as Saddam Hussein was in power. There was no document
stating this, but it was well-known. Many armchair leftists blame two
Bushes for the illegal 2003 invasion of Ira! q and consequently all the
suffering the people endured during the embargo. The facts, however, show
this is a fallacy. In 1993, Warren Christopher, Bill Clinton’s first
Secretary of State, said many times that the embargo would not be lifted
with Saddam in power. Nobody listened, but he was accurate...

Sunnis Complain of Random Arrests, Torture
Daud Salman
The recent revelations of torture at a secret Baghdad jail did not surprise
many of the capital's Sunni Arab residents and leaders, who said civil
rights violations have become a regular occurrence. Sunni Arabs here said
that months before reports of torture at the ministry of interior facility
emerged, the ministry and the Iraqi National Guard were randomly arresting,
torturing and killings members of their community. They also accused
security forces of all! owing armed militias to roam freely in the city...

Iraq's oil: The spoils of war
Philip Thornton, Economics Correspondent, The Independent
Iraqis face the dire prospect of losing up to $200bn (£116bn) of the wealth
of their country if an American-inspired plan to hand over development of
its oil reserves to US and British multinationals comes into force next
year. A report produced by American and British pressure groups warns Iraq
will be caught in an "old colonial trap" if it allows foreign companies to
take a share of its vast energy reserves. The report is ce! rtain to
reawaken fears that the real purpose of the 2003 war on Iraq was to ensure
its oil came under Western control. The Iraqi government has announced
plans to seek foreign investment to exploit its oil reserves after the
general election, which will be held next month. Iraq has 115 billion
barrels of proved oil reserves, the third largest in the world...

New Anti-Insurgency Tactic has Gained Wide Appeal in Iraq
Brian Conley, Alive in Baghdad
It was recently revealed, in a US-backed raid, that torture is going on
under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior. Despite the apparent
media blackout on the topic, torture has been an ongoing tactic of the
counter-insurgency work in Iraq. At first it was employed at Abu Ghraib and
possibly other US military establishments in Iraq, and it quickly became a
prime tactic of the newly formed Iraqi Police and Iraqi Natio! nal Guard.
The tactic became a regular tool in the Iraqi counter-insurgency toolbox
and has since been used widely throughout Iraq...

"said he had personally never seen any intelligence linking Iraq to
al-Qaida, and 'no one I knew believed that was the case.’ But that doesn’t

US Death Toll Reaches 2,100, Bomber Kills 17
Bassem Mroue, The Associated Press
A suicide car bomber attacked a police patrol Tuesday in the northern city
of Kirkuk, killing at least 17 people, and three US soldiers died in two
separate attacks, pushing the American death toll in Iraq to 2,100,
officials said. In Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, insurgents fired a
mortar at a US ceremony attended by top officials to hand over a
presidential palace to Iraqi authorities, sending the US ambassador and top
comma! nder scrambling for cover but causing no injuries...

Leaving Baghdad
Marc Ash, t r u t h o u t
...The war in Iraq is now, and always was, unwinnable. We will leave. The
only question is how many men, women and children will die as we come to
that conclusion. In 1971, a young Navy Lieutenant returning from duty in
Vietnam sat before the US Senate and challenged the entire premise for the
war, and in doing so laid the groundwork for peace. He said: "Someone has
to die so that President Nixon won't be, and these are his words, 'the
first President to lose a war.' We a! re asking Americans to think about
that because how do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam?"...

X’ing Out Cheney: Sounds Good to Me
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
Matt Drudge, who boosted his questionable career exposing the juvenile
sexual dalliance of Clinton, is all a twitter about somebody at CNN
flashing an X over Cheney’s face as he gave a speech at the American
Enterprise Institute, the criminal neocon organization responsible in part
for killing more than 100,000 Iraqis. According to Drudge, a "top White
House source expressed concern about what was aired over CNN. 'Is someone

Sleepwalking through slaughter: on the western media's concealment of
crimes against humanity
The Democrat's Diary
Following a week in which TV and newspapers reported the US military’s
illegal use of chemical weapons in Iraq, and the employment by the
US-backed Iraqi government of torture chambers and paramilitary death
squads(1), one might be forgiven for thinking that the media is carrying
out the essential task of relaying the information necessary for us to be
able to assess our government’s policies. In fac! t, it is the media’s near
total failure to report on the bloodshed caused by our side in the ongoing
conflict that keeps many current US-UK government officials in their jobs,
if not out of the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war
crimes. The reality is that gruesome atrocities continue to be committed by
the occupying powers in Iraq, and that these pass with little or no mention
in the mainstream media on either side of the Atlantic...

We know .... You did not really need to prove it ... except to yourself
Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq
...What I was raised to consider "Judeo-Christian ethics" are conspicuously
absent in occupied Mesopotamia. U.S. troops have tortured and sexually
abused innocent civilians, and killed tens of thousands. From the bizarre
killing of the Baghdad Zoo's prized Bengal tiger to the contamination of
land, rivers and atmosphere, to the doubling of child malnutrition, the
invasion piles up crime upon crime. It is as though it ! were seeking to so
impress the subject population with arbitrary cruelty that it will be
terrorized into submission. Indeed, Iraqis compare this occupation with the
Mongol invasion led by Hulegu Khan in the 1250s, which destroyed Baghdad's
canal network, sacked the library, and slaughtered 80,000 men, women and
children...

Iraq Bushevik Puppet Leaders Want American Troops Out and "Understand" Why
"Insurgents" are Killing Our Soldiers. Whoa! We are Into Dangerous
Psychotic Territory with the Busheviks.
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS
...Okay, so here is how it's shaping up today. Now, Iraqi leaders are
calling for an American troop pull out -- and condoning the insurgent
movement against American troops. How much more F***ed up can this get?
Now, these are the Bushevik hand-picked leaders (forget about that Florida
2000-style election cha! rade in Iraq), so the Bushevik slander squad can't
condemn them. Yet, the Bushevik Iraqi puppets are going beyond what John
Murtha said because they are basically saying that they understand why the
"insurgents" are killing American soldiers! Whoa! Holy Bushevik insanity!
On the other hand, this may all be the Chickenhawk Cheney/Bush way of
saying that the Iraqis are politely asking us to leave -- and since we
"liberated" them, we will honor their request. In short, it's Bush's
choreographed exit door...

A Letter from Ramadi--"I Wish Every American Could See This for Him/Herself"
Paul Rieckhoff
...Do you think Murtha is wrong about how things are going in Iraq? Do you
feel he is exaggerating what our military is really up against in Iraq?
Well, let me give you something to think about. Recently, I got an email
from a very close buddy of mine currently serving as an officer in Ramadi,
Iraq. He speaks with a candor and level of frustration that you won't hear
from the Generals regurgitating White House talking poin! ts on TV...

White phosphorous round hits Bush ... Finally
Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq
Neither Cheney's 'smokescreens' nor Rumsfeld's 'illuminating' insights that
were showered for several years upon the (till now) gullible American
public are going to spare president Bush from Murtha's "Willie Pete".
(White phosphorus is highly flammable and ignites on contact with oxygen.
If the substance hits a person's body, it will burn until deprived of
oxygen. Globalsecurity.org, a defence website, says: "Phosphorus burns on
the skin are ! deep and painful... These weapons are particularly nasty
because white phosphorus continues to burn until it disappears... it could
burn right down to the bone.")...

Veterans sign on to Support Congressman Murtha
Murtha said, "The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on
the present course."
GlobalResearch.ca
Over 70 Veterans with service from the 40's to 2005 signed on to a letter
of support for Congressman John Murtha. Inital supporters held six purple
hearts, a silver star and others who had served in combat and peace time.
Dennis Kyne, who spoke at the event, asked all veterans, regardless of
politics to sign on. Kyne stated, "It has b! een seventeen months since we
viewed the photos of Abu Ghirab. It is the implied policy of this
administration that torture will be accepted. We have not heard a whimper
from the Medical Community. The legal Community, nor the Civil Society.
Finally someone has spoken for the troops and the victims"...

A War Crime Within A War Crime Within A War Crime
GEORGE MONBIOT
...But we shouldn’t forget that the use of chemical weapons was a war crime
within a war crime within a war crime. Both the invasion of Iraq and the
assault on Falluja were illegal acts of aggression. Before attacking the
city in November last year, the Marines stopped the men "of fighting age"
from leaving. Many women and children stayed as well: the Observer’s
correspondent estimated that between 30,000 and 50,000 civilians were left
in the city. ! The Marines then treated Falluja as if its only inhabitants
were fighters. They levelled thousands of buildings, illegally denied
access to the Iraqi Red Crescent, and, according to the UN’s special
rapporteur, used "hunger and deprivation of water as a weapon of war
against the civilian population"...

Torture Under the Philosophical Guidance of Cheney
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
According to retired U.S. Army Col. Larry Wilkerson, Colin Powell’s chief
of staff, the "philosophical guidance" of Dick Cheney is behind Bush’s rape
and torture gulag. "There’s no question in my mind where the philosophical
guidance and the flexibility in order to do so originated—in the vice
president of the United States’ office. His implementer in this case was
Donald Rumsfeld and the defense department," Wilkerson told t! he Times of
India. Porter Goss, current Reichmarshall of the CIA (an appropriate
designation for Goss, since the CIA was created by sadistic war criminals
such as Klaus Barbie and Reinhard Gehlen), said Bush’s medieval
interrogators used "unique" methods to obtain "vital" information from
abductees (one such "unique" method, passed down to Iraq’s puppet police by
British intelligence, consists of torturing civilians to death with
electric drills, according to the Independent on Sunday)...

Rep. Murtha a Hero, Bush and Cheney Are Lying Cowards
Dr. Sam Hamod, editor, www.todaysalternativenews.com
Representative Paul Murtha, a decorated veteran, has spoken out about the
need to pull our troops out of Iraq, NOW! The response from VP Cheney, a
known draft dodger and coward who runs from face-to-face confrontation and
prefers verbal attacks on people through the media, was to attack Murtha
via media rather than answering him or his criticism. Bush and Rumsfeld ran
for cover; they left it up to their "dar! k op", Cheney to do the "usual
dirty-work."...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 21 November 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice, http://www.freearabvoice.org
...The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the southern Iraqi city of
al-Basrah reported in a dispatch posted at 6:55pm Mecca time Monday night
that more than 20 physicians and university professors had received death
threats from unknown persons in the last two days. A well-known heart
surgeon told Mafkarat al-Islam that he had r! eceived a death threat on a
piece of paper. The sectarian message read, "Get out of al-Basrah, you son
of Mu'awiyah, or you will be killed." (Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan ruled as
the first caliph of the Ummayad dynasty from 661-680 C.E. and is regarded
by the Shi'ah as a usurper who repressed their forefathers.)...

The War Didn't Go Wrong; It's Always Been Wrong
Getting Out of Iraq
NORMAN SOLOMON
This week began with the New York Times noting that "all of Washington is
consumed with debate over the direction of the war in Iraq." The debate --
long overdue -- is a serious blow to the war makers in Washington, but the
U.S. war effort will go on for years more unless the antiwar movement gains
sufficient momentum to stop it. A cliche goes that war is too important to
be left to the generals. But a more relevant asse! ssment is that peace is
too vital to be left to pundits and members of Congress -- people who have
overwhelmingly dismissed the option of swiftly withdrawing U.S. troops from
Iraq...
