JULY 18, 2004
Malcom Lagauche
...On July 18, 2004, the headline of the day for the British paper The
Independent read, "British Prime Minister Admits Graves Claim Untrue." How
could that be? George Bush and Tony Blair don’t lie. If we can’t trust
them, who can we trust? Certainly not Saddam, even though he told the truth
about WMD. That must have been a fluke. According to the article: Downing
Street has admitted to The Observer that repeated claims by Tony Blair that
"about 400,000 bodies had been found in Ir! aqi mass graves" is untrue, and
only about 5,000 corpses have so far been uncovered. The claims by Blair in
November and December of last year (2003) were given widespread credence,
quoted by MPs and widely published, including in the introduction to a U.S.
government pamphlet on Iraq’s mass graves (...) The date of July 18, 2004
should be heralded as much as other dates in world history. It was the date
on which the truth about Iraqi mass graves was published. However, not one
word appeared in the U.S. press. And, within a day or two, Blair quickly
changed directions and came up with other ploys to downplay the
announcement that he had lied on a massive scale...

Hurricane Hugo at the U.N.
Mike Whitney
...Chavez proposes his own set of reforms for the UN, including expansion
of the Security Council, greater transparency, increasing the powers of the
Secretary General, and "suppressing" the power of one nation to veto
resolutions made by the council. But, he does not believe that reforms are
enough by themselves and insists that the UN be transformed completely,
beginning with a change of venue from New York to an "international city
with its own sovereignty". Chavez's lo! gic is inescapable; if the United
States continues to flaunt UN resolutions and violate international law, as
it has with the Iraq war, it should not be host to the world body. Chavez's
suggestion was not made to humiliate the United States, but to demonstrate
the urgency of the calamity the world faces if action is not taken swiftly
on matters of mutual concern. Chavez takes a keen interest in these issues
even though Washington chooses to ignore them...

Mass Media and New Orleans
From Victims to Vandals
JAMES PETRAS, CounterPunch
...The mass media made an abrupt turn, adapting and shaping the images of
the Administration's catastrophe. In seven days the magic of the media
transformed the Bush team from incompetent and ignorant leaders to decisive
and caring officials. At the same time the desperate, dying and furious
were converted into an unruly, crime-ridden, ungrateful and chaotic mob.
The political message was clear: Repression and militarization w! ere
priority conditions for survival and humanitarian aid. The city had to be
under de facto martial law before it could be saved. Viet Nam and Falluja
come to mind. After all, counter-insurgency is what we do best...

The Song Remains the Same
The Politics of Withdrawal from Iraq
RON JACOBS
...Now that the US military and its Iraqi subsidiary are chasing citizens
from the town of Tal Afar and its surrounding regions, the US media has
been obediently repeating Pentagon assertions that the resistance forces
living in the area are either foreign or being trained in foreign lands,
more often than not in Syria. While there is probably some truth to this
assertion, the fact remains that guerrilla warriors can not survive !
without support from the local population. Ignoring the obvious hypocrisy
of an occupying force decrying the possible existence of a foreign hand
helping out the occupied country's citizens engaged in resisting the
occupier (didn't the French help out the anti-British forces in colonial
America?), the facts on the ground indicate that the US is more concerned
about the Iraqis in the area under attack. Otherwise, why would they be
forcing the civilians out of the town of Tal Afar via checkpoints set up
and maintained by US and client Iraqi forces?...

Draft Constitution - Part I...
Riverbend, Baghdad burning
I’ve been reading and re-reading the Iraqi draft constitution since the
beginning of September. I decided to ignore the nagging voice in my head
that kept repeating, “A new constitution cannot be legitimate under an
occupation!” and also the one that was saying, “It isn’t legitimate because
the government writing it up isn’t legitimate.” I put those thoughts away
and decided to try to view the whole situation as dispassionately as
possible. I! t was during the online search for the *real* draft
constitution that the first problem with the document hit me. There are, as
far as I can tell, three different versions. There are two different Arabic
versions and the draft constitution translated to English in the New York
Times a few weeks ago differs from them both. I wish I could understand the
Kurdish version- I wonder if that is different too. The differences aren’t
huge- some missing clauses or articles. Then again, this is a constitution-
not a blog… one would think precision is a must.

Jackbooted Police State Emerging in New Orleans
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...Bush’s attempt to commandeer state National Guards, working with
corporate elitists to hire mercenaries and privatize the police state
emerging in New Orleans, allowing foreign troops in to conduct
“humanitarian” work (as they carry Heckler & Koch German assault rifles),
and doling out no-bid “reconstruction” contracts to corporate cronies—these
are distressing signs of how the Bushian police state will unfold across
much of ! America in the wake of “disasters,” either natural or unnatural,
the latter in the form of a nuclear attack on America, as our corrupt and
fascistic plutocracy continual promises. New Orleans is nothing short of an
authoritarian motif designed to eliminate the First, Second, and Sixth
Amendments of the Constitution in other American cities and subject
millions of Americans to the jackbooted thugocracy Bush’s handlers and
their transnational corporate benefactors have in mind...

Iraq’s libraries: what recovery from “a national disaster beyond imagination”?
Sandy English, WSWS
Under the auspices of the Middle East Library Association, Jeff Spurr of
Harvard University’s Fine Arts Library has authored the most recent report
on the condition of Iraqi academic libraries since the American invasion.
“Indispensable yet Vulnerable: The Library in Dangerous Times” describes
the state of these institutions, focusing primarily on the most prestigious
and largest. It also details various internation! al efforts under way to
assist them. The report documents warnings the Bush administration received
about the dangers an American invasion posed to Iraq’s cultural heritage...

LIAR, LIAR
Jason Miller
If George Bush had encountered the same fate as Jim Carrey’s character in
the movie Liar Liar, and had been rendered incapable of lying, America
would not have been subjected to thirty minutes of manipulative propaganda
on 9/15. Compelled to tell the truth, Bush’s oration would have captured
the reality of the situation in New Orleans, and of life for the poor and
working class in an America dominated by a wealthy aristocracy...

A statement by the National leadership of the Arab Baath Socialist Party
Culture and information Bureau
Concerning the "Referendum" Boycott
Arab Baath Socialist Party - Al-Moharer.net
Today the plot to divide Iraq and to wipe out its Arab identity has entered
its founding and dangerous phase, through imposing a US dividing
constitution based on sectarianism and racism, a constitution written by
the Zionist Noah Feldman, while Paul Bremer the US civil governor declared
it, a legal foundation for (occ! upied) Iraq. It no wonder why the US
Ambassador, his President and his Secretary of State; are practicing direct
pressures to fasten its endorsement, interfering in every details of its so
called debate; offering every possible bribes mixed with threats to those
who refuse the draft of this US constitution, or those who oppose some of
its articles, to force them to get involved in the plot of dividing Iraq...

Georgie, You’re Doing a Heck of a Job
W. David Jenkins III, POAC
...Just like the aftermath of 9/11, the Bush administration is more
involved in damage control rather than correcting the damage. They don’t
want any “independent” investigation into what happened (which strikes me
as odd – why not just put Philip D. Zelikow in charge like they did with
“independent” 9/11 commission? That way they could white-wash this
investigation too?). Bush has spent the time since 9/11 weakening our
homeland security and making! more enemies. He has depleted our resources
in money and lives in his quest to be allowed to sit next to Pappy Bush at
the next family Thanksgiving dinner. And in New Orleans , just like Iraq ,
we are reading some familiar names that promise to help “fix” everything.
Halliburton, KBR, Blackstone and other “family businesses” are moving into
yet another Bush created disaster zone...

Poor Planning and Corruption Hobble the Rebuilding of Iraq
Craig S. Smith, The New York Times
In April, Najaf's main maternity hospital received rare good news: an $8
million refurbishment program financed by the United States would begin
immediately. But five months and millions of dollars later, the hospital
administrators say they have little but frustration to show for it. "They
keep saying there's renovation but, frankly, we don't see it," said Liqaa
al-Yassin, director of the hospital, her exasperated face ! framed by a
black hijab, or scarf. "Each day I sign in 80 workers, and sometimes I see
them, sometimes I don't"...

What Noble Cause?
Cindy Sheehan, t r u t h o u t
It has been one month, one week, and 4 days since I sat in a ditch in
Crawford, Texas. My request was very simple: I wanted to speak to the man
who has sent over a million of our young people over to fight, kill, and
die in a country that was absolutely no threat to the United States of
America. I wanted to ask him: "What is the Noble Cause that you keep
talking about?" Well, we all know now that George Bush never came down the
road to talk to me...

Post-Neocon Neolibs Have No Use for al-CIA-duh
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
...Ultimately, the Soros version of neoliberalism will prevail due to the
unavoidable fact the neocons are essentially self-destructive nihilists
destined for the dust bin of history (but not before they kill thousands,
possibly millions of people—note Dick Cheney’s enthusiasm for the use of
nukes against Iran and other nations). It is said Bill Clinton was
indifferent to the “growing threat” of al-Qaeda and there was of course a!
good reason for this: “al-Qaeda” was never a “threat” until the neocons
capitalized on their highly exaggerated potential as a scary bogeyman.
Prior to the neocon ascension, “al-Qaeda” was a small outfit of latter-day
mujahideen, used for small operations in the Balkans and Chechnya. It was
not the world-class terrorist threat manufactured by the Straussian
neocons, who, due to their Hobbesian-Machiavellian orientation, understand
there must be a threat in order for the leader to assume unprecedented
power. However, as more pragmatic neolibs understand, the same
result—prying open “markets,” in other words unchecked thievery—can be
accomplished under the gloss of “democracy.”..

Statement of Alexander Lukashenko at the 60th session of the UN
BELARUSIAN TELEGRAPH AGENCY - Iraqwar.ru
...Quite recently, in the room next to ours we were shown maps and graphs
allegedly depicting weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Were those weapons
found? They do not exist. In the meantime, Iraq was razed with bombs,
devastated, people brought to utmost despair (...) The leaders of the
sovereign Yugoslavia and Iraq were put behind bars on groundless, absurd
and far-fetched accusations. This was a very oppor! tune way to conceal the
truth about annihilation of their countries. The trial of Milosevic was
made into a caricature since long ago. Saddam Hussein was abandoned to the
winner’s mercy, like in barbarian times. There is nobody to defend their
rights except the UN, their states no longer around, destroyed. They should
be released to be able to defend freely their rights, honour and human
dignity...

How Long Can The Pentagon Lie About Depleted Uranium?
Christopher Bollyn, American Free Press - Rense.com
The U.S. government's duplicity about the harmful effects of depleted
uranium appears to have no limits. While the Pentagon tells U.S. military
personnel that the health risks from inhaling depleted uranium are low, a
study - sponsored by the Dept. of Defense - confirms that even low-level
radiation causes cancer.
A government-funded study has confirmed what nuclear experts have known for
decades: Any dose of ionizing radiation poses serious health risks. The
National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences published a
report in June 2005 confirming that ionizing radiation (IR) causes cancer.
The consensus opinion of the 17 independent scientists who signed the
report was that exposure to radiation from medical x-rays and nuclear
medicine is directly linked to cancer...

GI Special 3C55: Norway Getting Out Of Iraq - September 17, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
Norwegian Labor Party leader Jens Stoltenberg, who is set to become premier
after winning an election this week, told President Bush that Norway will
pull its soldiers out of Iraq. Norway did not support the U.S.-led war in
Iraq, saying there was no clear U.N. mandate for an invasion, but sent
soldiers after Washington said the war had ended. "President Bush called Mr
Stoltenberg to congratulate him on the election victory,! and they
discussed cooperation on the war on terror and Stoltenberg said we would
bring the soldiers in Iraq home," Stoltenberg's spokesman Torbjoern Eriksen
said...

Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Entire Text of President Chavez' speech at UN General Assembly, Thursday
September 15, 2005 (in Spanish and English)
President Hugo Chavez Frias - Axis of Logic
...At the Porto Alegre World Social Forum last January different
personalities asked for the United Nations to move outside the United
States if the repeated violations to international rule of law continue.
Today we know that there were never any weapons of mass destruction in
Iraq. The people of the United Sta! tes have always been very rigorous in
demanding the truth to their leaders; the people of the world demand the
same thing. There were never any weapons of mass destruction; however, Iraq
was bombed, occupied and it is still occupied. All this happened over the
United Nations. That is why we propose this Assembly that the United
Nations should leave a country that does not respect the resolutions taken
by this same Assembly...

"Abou Moussab Al-Zarkawi is dead. His name is being used by the occupants
as a pretext for staying in Iraq."
Axis of Logic
Sheikh Jawad Al-Khalessi is the imam of the mosque Al-Kazemiya in Baghdad
and dean of the adjoining religious school. He is passing through Paris
after an interreligious meeting in Sant'Egidio in Lyon. Abou Moussab
Al-Zarkawi has declared "total war" on Shiites and perpetrated the
bloodiest massacre in Baghdad, Wednesday, Sept 14, since the beginning of
the war. What is your opinion of thi! s declaration? I don't think that
Abou Moussab Al-Zarkawi exists as such. He is an invention of the occupants
intended to divide the people, since he was killed in the north of Iraq
when he was with the group Ansar Al-Islam, in Kurdistan. His family, in
Jordan, even held a ceremony after his death. Abou Moussab Al-Zarkawi is
thus a toy used by the Americans, an excuse to keep up the occupation. He
is a pretext for not leaving Iraq...

Residents flee Iraq's Samara city

Hundreds of families from the Iraqi city of Samara were fleeing their town
Saturday in fear of a massive military campaign. Residents who arrived in
Baghdad from Samara, 62 miles (100 kilometers) north of the capital, said
hundreds of cars have fled the city in the past two days as they sought
refuge in nearby towns for safety. The massive emigration came after Iraqi
Defense Minister Saadoun al-Duleimi last week warned of a military attack
