By taking part in an act of mass resistance at the White House, or joining with others in face-to-face meetings with members of Congress and/or their staffs, you will help powerfully amplify the crucial political message of our weekend mobilization: Bring Our Troops Home Now! MASS NONVIOLENT ACTION AT THE WHITE HOUSE Monday, September 26 <http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=37231558&url_num=9&url=http://www.unitedforpeace.org/nvda>www.unitedforpeace.org/nvda Mourn the Dead. Resist Bush’s War. Bring U.S. troops home, now! For the last two and half years the U.S. war and occupation of Iraq has brought immeasurable death and destruction. This is a war that never should have happened, a war based on lies and greed. It is time to end it and bring our troops home, now. United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) invites you to participate in a mass civil resistance action at the White House on Monday, September 26, 2005. As part of three days of public protest against the war in Iraq, this action will provide a dramatic opportunity to more directly express your opposition to the war makers. Building on many traditions of nonviolent action and civil resistance, the protest at the White House will bring together people from different communities and constituencies. For some people this will be the first time they have risked arrest, for others this will be something they have done before. But for all who participate, the action at the White House will be a vehicle to communicate our deeply held convictions that this war must end now. Our action on September 26 will remember and mourn the precious Iraqi and U.S. lives lost in this war while forcefully resisting the Bush White House that is responsible for the carnage and suffering. And while we will be at Bush's front door others will be on Capitol Hill as part of a day of grassroots lobbying, pointing out the ways Congress has been a partner in the war-making and that our representatives must now must do their part to end this illegal, immoral war. We will take our grief and outrage directly to the President, demanding that he hear our message - Bring the Troops Home Now, no more death and destruction. We will begin by solemnly encircling the White House to the tolling of bells and then move in waves to the White House gates to deliver our message. We will not leave until our message is heard! The nonviolent civil resistance actions being organized by United for Peace and Justice will be focused on the White House. We welcome the creative ideas of affinity groups from around the nation that will help make this the strongest statement possible. And we encourage you to help us bring large numbers of people to participate in this important protest. UFPJ also expresses solidarity with activists who may act elsewhere that day in a nonviolent manner. Our goal is to have over 600 people from around the country meet with over 100 members of Congress and their aides. Our delegations will include Cindy Sheehan and fellow members of Gold Star Families for Peace on the Bring them Home Now Tour. Make plans to join us today! Who can participate? UFPJ member groups are working together to organize joint delegations. Members of organizations and unaffiliated individuals that share UFPJ’s political goals and legislative goals for the day are welcome to participate. If space is tight, preference will be given to members of UFPJ-affiliated organizations How do I participate in Congressional Education Day/Lobby Day? <http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=37231558&url_num=12&url=http://www.unitedforpeace.org/lobbyform>The first step is to register. You can register as an individual and join a delegation that we will set up. The delegation you join will meet with your Representative, and will join others to meet with your Senators. Or, you can volunteer to be a point person. What is the point person’s job? The point person is responsible for making the appointment with the Representative. After you register, one of our Congress Day coordinators will follow-up with you to give you all the information you need to do this. We will keep the point person informed as new people register to visit from the same congressional district. The point person will keep that information and update the Congressperson as the delegation grows. Should I make an appointment with my congress person before I register? NO! Someone from your area may have already made an appointment. It makes us look disorganized and divided if more than one person calls to make an appointment – so please register here first! After you register, our Congress Day coordinators will advise you if someone is already the point person for that Representative. What if I have never met with a member of Congress before? This is a great time for your first Congressional visit. UFPJ will hold a mandatory comprehensive training for each delegation on Sunday the 25th, and we will supply you with written materials. You will be fully prepared for your meeting with your legislator. What will we be advocating for? UFPJ’s legislative priorities are to push for legislation that gets the troops out now, on the shortest possible timeline in logistical terms. At the same time, where appropriate, UFPJ remains open to supporting other, more moderate legislation calling for withdrawal, if and when that legislation will contribute to ending the occupation and the political defeat of the warmakers. We are keeping a close watch on Congress to see what pieces of legislation have the most promise. Once you register, we will send you UFPJ’s legislative priorities, and information on specific bills and actions that we will be asking for. What happens after I register? We will respond to your registration by email, usually within one day. If you are registering as an individual, we will incorporate you into a delegation, and we will let you know when your congressional visits are scheduled. If you are registering as a point person, we’ll help you make your appointment(s) and let you know who else will be joining your delegation. All registrants will receive information on the training, legislation and all lobby day related events.
