New Orleans and Fallujah have a lot in common
Sam Hamod
I think that New Orleans and Fallujah have a lot in common. They are both
cities that have been raped by the American neo-con establishment with the
help of our national guards and American military. Fallujah was bombed
mercilessly, even though there were no known "terrorists" there; there were
people who lived there who fought back against the illegal American attack
on their city. But even the U.S. commanders admitted publicly that even if
Al Zarqawi (who ! is a figment of the American media and military, because
he was killed in Jordan, a few year earlier), was there--he would have been
gone before the American rape and pillaging of that city...

US Troops "ROOTOUT" Another Iraqi Terrorist
"Iraq's youngest martyr"
IraqTunnel
A pregnant, 40 years old Iraqi woman was shot by US military on August
10th, 2005 in the city of Mosul, northern Iraq, while in front of her
house. The woman, who was in her 32nd week of pregnancy, was hit in her
abdomen and collapsed immediately. As usual, US troops looked carelessly
and walked away, not offering any help or medical care. Bystanders then
took the woman to the ER at the Republican Hospital in Mosul. The E! R
medical team performed a C-section in an attempt to save the fetus, but he
was dead as the bullet had penetrated his chest and exited from his back...

Katrina II Ravages the Sunni Triangle!
Maher Osseiran
If you think that the large deployment of US troops in the southern states
of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in response to Katrina's devastation
would ease the suffering of the Iraqis, think again. It is not uncommon for
oppressive regimes to use catastrophes in other countries as a cover for
acts of violence, repression, and implementation of policies that otherwise
the rest of the world would frown on (...) Prior to Katrina and still
ongoing, the United! States with the support of Iraqi troops, who are most
likely Kurdish Peshmerga, are actively engaged in an ethnic cleansing
operation in Tal-Afar, where 90% of the population is reported to have
left, and the surrounding area under the guise of stopping infiltrators
from Syria...

The Militarization of New Orleans. From Victims to Vandals: Mass Media and
New Orleans
James Petras, Globalresearch.ca
...Nothing captures the “revised line” of the media better than the
prominent place given to the government’s order to “Shoot to kill looters”.
Not a whimper of protest, not a critical voice: The media converted the
destitute city into a war zone: New Orleans became Fallujah. The media
dredged up every rumor, hearsay, un-substantiated third hand report of
child rape and murder to provide a “conte! xt” for the “new reality” – the
militarization of a devastated American city. The media are well prepared
for that scenario: Embedded journalist featured soldiers handing out
concentrated military field rations (totally useless for small children and
dehydrated elderly) while the beating of blacks carrying groceries (blacks
‘loot’ food; whites ‘find’ food) was omitted...

Is the US military preparing another massacre in Tal Afar?
James Cogan, WSWS
The largest US military offensive on an urban area since the attack on
Fallujah last year has been underway since September 2 in the city of Tal
Afar, an ancient metropolis with a predominantly Sunni Muslim, ethnic
Turkish population of some 300,000. Situated in the north of Iraq along the
Euphrates River and just 40 kilometres from the Syrian border, Tal Afar has
been largely outside the control of the occupation forces since the 2003 i!
nvasion. In September 2004, the US military carried out a major operation
to impose its authority over Tal Afar, but was forced to withdraw by
November in order to redeploy troops to the heavy fighting in Fallujah and
Mosul. In the 10 months since, Tal Afar has become one of the centres for
the anti-occupation guerilla struggle in the north...

Thug Bush wants to civilize the Iraqis.. Ha.. Ha.. Ha.. - Part (I)
Abu Assur, Al-Moharer
The French High school pupils at a Lycée in Toulouse (south of France) are
studiously working these days and over a whole week on an Iraqi Babylonian
clay tablet engraved in the second millennium B.C. This initiative
suggested by the writer of this article who is by the way a professor of
Ancient Civilizations and organized by Mrs. Michèle Moucoud, a professor of
mathematics and a member of the Gigouzac Club of Astronomy (So! uthern
France), proposes to the Lycée students a dreamlike trip to the roots and
the origins of our universal common culture and civilization in
Mesopotamia. Yes it was on this sacred land of Iraq, where the first time
ever in history, some six thousands years ago, Iraqis, established urban
centers, built schools, invented the writing, organized the society,
conveyed a message, accumulated knowledge, and documented history and
defied death with the power of the written word....

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 7 September 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice.
In a dispatch posted at 6:50pm Mecca time Wednesday afternoon, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that a short time before the Iraqi Resistance had
circulated statements and notices in Baghdad, al-Fallujah, Mosul, Samarra’,
Diyala and other Iraqi cities, warning all Iraqi civilians to stay far away
from occupation army vehicles, occupation military camps and base! s, and
checkpoints on the streets during the next few days. The notice, a copy of
which was obtained by the Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam,
warned that coming days would be “as black as the darkest night for the
occupation forces and their stooges”...

UN raises alarm on death squads and torture in Iraq
Mussab Al-Khairalla, Reuters
The United Nations raised the alarm on Thursday about mounting violence in
Iraq blamed on pro-government militias and urged the authorities to look
into reports of systematic torture in police stations. In a bi-monthly
human rights report, released on a day when 14 more victims of
"extrajudicial executions" were found near Baghdad, the U.N. Assistance
Mission for Iraq also said "mass arrests" by U.S. and Iraqi forces, and
long detent! ions without charge, could damage support for the new
political system...

Iraq violence: Spreading south?
Jonathan Charles , BBC News
It has been a bad week in the normally quiet and mainly Shia south of Iraq,
where British troops have been trying to maintain order since the end of
the 2003 war. Now, the coalition and Iraqi authorities are wondering
whether they are seeing the start of a fresh wave of violence in the run up
to next month's referendum on the new Iraqi constitution...

Unity in despair
Nermine Al-Mufti, Al-Ahram Weekly
Last week saw the Iraqi government and National Assembly in the ignominious
position of trying to convince Iraqis that they should deal with the
Al-A'ema Bridge disaster as if it, along with the round of tragedies daily
faced, is somehow part of everyday life. True, the government opened an
investigation into the disaster on the bridge while in a well- publicised
move senior government officials donated hundreds of millions of Iraqi
dinars to the families of the ! victims. But these appear to be largely
face-saving measures...

What Kind of Extremist Will You Be?
Cindy Sheehan
Most everyone who is reading this knows what happened to Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. on April 04, 1968. Some of you may even know what happened to my
son, Spc. Casey Austin Sheehan on April 04, 2004. If you don't know, Dr
King and Casey were murdered by the same malevolent entities: People and
ideologies that say that we have to be mortally afraid of the "ism" du jour
and we, as Americans who have the "moral high-ground" in the world can send
our innocent children! to invade innocent countries and kill innocent
people to fight the "ists" that go with the "isms"...

Don't look, now. Turn your head, and mind.
Imad Khadduri , Free Iraq
...The US government agency leading the rescue efforts after Hurricane
Katrina said on Tuesday it does not want the news media to take photographs
of the dead as they are recovered from the flooded New Orleans area. The
Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow
response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected requests from
journalists to accompany rescue boats as they went out to search for storm
victim! s Recall that this administration forbids any photography of the
flag-draped coffins coming back from Iraq. Coincidence?...

FEMA and Katrina: REX-84 Revisited
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
If you believe the corporate media, FEMA is simply a bungling and inept
emergency management agency and its director, Michael Brown, according to
the Washington Post, is simply an "accidental director" and "the failed
head of an Arabian horse sporting group who was plucked from obscurity to
become President Bush's point man for the worst natural disaster in U.S.
history" and, as the Boston Globe notes, "got the job through an old
college fri! end who at the time was heading up FEMA.... Brown -- formerly
an estates and family lawyer -- this week has made several shocking public
admissions, including interviews where he suggested FEMA was unaware of the
misery and desperation of refugees stranded at the New Orleans convention
center." In short, the corporate media would have us believe Brown is a
clueless lawyer and former horse trader and FEMA an unresponsive federal
bureaucratic leviathan wrapped up in red tape. But this does not explain
the following...

Iraq War Going Worse Than Expected, Say Americans
Angus Reid Consultants
Many adults in the United States are concerned about the progress of the
coalition effort in Iraq, according to a poll by Opinion Dynamics released
by Fox News. 52 per cent of respondents believe things for U.S. troops are
going worse than expected. The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein’s
regime was launched in March 2003. At least 1,887 American soldiers have
died during the military operation, and more than 14,200 troops have been

Bush's Stormy Summer
Cindy, Katrina and the War in Iraq
DAVID KRIEGER, CounterPunch
...Mr. Bush's response to Katrina has been no more satisfactory than his
response to Cindy Sheehan. Cindy concluded that "George and his band of
incompetent and dangerous thugs need to resign." While many serious
Americans may believe this is true, it is an unlikely possibility. Mr.
Bush's plummeting numbers in the polls, however, do suggest that a healthy
majority of Americans are recognizing that his policies and lack ! of
competence are undermining the levees that protect our democracy, our
security and our international standing...

Blair: The stench of hypocrisy
Mike Cobley
...What consistently makes my blood boil is Blair`s two-faced approach
towards the killing of the innocent, otherwise known as `murder`. When
pseudo-pious zealots do it, either here or in Iraq and elsewhere, he calls
it terrorism driven by a violent ideology; when this country helped America
invade Iraq and kill thousands of its citizens, as well as wreck its
infrastructure, that`s called liberation. Who has killed more? - insurgents
and suicide terrorists, or the armies! of America and Britain? Well, any
rational appraisal of the unlawfully killed in Iraq and Afghanistan will
quickly show that Britain and America (and hey, we can always throw in
Israel`s record) have killed far, far more people than any gang of
terrorists...

Radiological materials not secured for months after Iraq invasion: report
AFP
The US Defense Department failed to secure sources of radiological material
in Iraq for six months after the US invasion in 2003, during which period
some were looted or scattered, a congressional watchdog said. In a report,
the Government Accountability Office said US forces ultimately collected
some 1,400 radiological sources used in medicine, industry and research,
and removed 1,000 of them. "According to DoD (Department of Defense) ! and
State officials, however, the total number of unsecured radiological
sources in Iraq remains unknown," the report said...

Lawyer denies Saddam confession
Aljazeera.net
Saddam Hussein's lawyer has denied that the former president has confessed
to ordering the death of more than 180,000 Kurds in the late 1980s. The
lawyer, Khalil Dulaimi, was responding to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani
who said in a state television broadcast on Tuesday that Saddam had
admitted he ordered the killing of the Kurds in northern Iraq. "There was
no confession from the president and the investigation of this case does
not incriminate the president at all,! " said Dulaimi on Thursday...

Tribunal Official Comments On Saddam "Confession"
Associated Press
The official says the former Iraqi leader acknowledged ordering deadly
retribution against Kurds in northern Iraq. However, he says Saddam boasted
that the killings were legal and justified. The official spoke on the

Iraq's president. Jalal Talabani said Saddam had confessed to killings and
other "crimes" committed during his regime...

New Orleans becomes a war zone
A dress rehearsal for martial law?
Bill Van Auken, WSWS
The disaster that struck New Orleans and the southern Gulf Coast has given
rise to the largest military mobilization in modern history on US soil.
Nearly 65,000 US military personnel are now deployed in disaster area,
transforming the devastated port city into a war zone. Squads of
combat-equipped troops toting assault rifles and columns of humvees with
gunners at the ready crisscross its flooded streets. Soldiers with bayo!
nets mounted have begun house-to-house canvassing of the city to enforce
the complete removal of its civilian population...
