Genesis of an American Gestapo
Mike Whitney
Tyranny has very few indispensable parts; a compliant media, that will
regulate information to meet the goals of the state; a “rubber-stamp”
Parliament that will endorse the policies of the supreme leader; a
judiciary that will adjust the law to serve the requirements of the ruling
body, a strong military to seize the wealth of weaker nations; and a
security apparatus, that will eliminate any domestic threats to the system.
On June 29 President Bush took the great-leap ! forward in transforming the
nation’s intelligence services by ordering a restructuring of the FBI and
putting “a broad swath of the agency” under the direct control of the
executive. Bingo; Bush’s personal secret police; an American Gestapo...

War in Iraq Violates International Law
Tom Krebsbach
More than two grueling years have passed since U.S. and coalition forces
stormed into the sovereign nation of Iraq. Still there has been little
discussion in this country about the legal standing of the invasion.
Perhaps that is because most Americans are reluctant to admit this
inconvenient but certain fact: The United States/United Kingdom invasion of
Iraq in 2003 was a war of aggression, a crime against the peace as defined
by the Nuremberg Principles...

The Irrational Rationale for Continuing the Iraq Occupation
Stan Moore
...The rationale goes something like: We know that the Iraq invasion was
based on a lie, regarding Iraqi threats and weapons of mass destruction. We
know that this war should never have occurred. HOWEVER, since we are now
there, occupying the country, and since nearly two thousand American lives
have been lost, we can't just up and leave. We have to defeat the
insurgency, and then we can leave. Is this rationale rational? Was there an
insurgen! cy before American troops occupied Iraq? NO! What are the
insurgents fighting about? THE AMERICAN OCCUPATION AND AMERICAN CONTROL OF
IRAQ. Will the Americans ever defeat the Iraqi insurgency? NO!...

Iraq Is Not Vietnam
Jim Cox
A rising concern that Iraq is becoming the new Vietnam has prompted many
commentators to denounce any such comparisons as too ridiculous to be
entertained. Here’s a comparison of Iraq limited to 2003–2004 to match the
first two years of US ground troop involvement in fighting in Vietnam,
1965–1966 to show the difference (...) Thus, we can all take comfort
securely in our knowledge that Iraq is not Vietnam; Vietnam is spelled with
a "V" and is in Southeast Asia, Iraq is spelled with an ! "I" and is in
Southwest Asia...

Dead men tell no tales
Were the London bombings a set up?
William Bowles and Edward Teague, I'n'I
I’m leery of conspiracy theories, especially when they involve convoluted
plots. Occam’s Razor is my guide, however, ever since the events of July 7
something has been nagging at me about the nature of the latest terrorist
attack, and not merely the timing but the methods. Call it a gut reaction
if you like but as more information has become available my suspicions have
heightened that all may not be as it seems! . And as the four young men are
(conveniently) dead, we’ll never hear their side of the story. Consider the
facts...

13 'tortured to death by police'
Gulf Daily News
Iraqi security forces stormed several houses in Baghdad early yesterday and
detained 13 people, including a Sunni cleric, before torturing and killing
most of them, a member of an influential Sunni group said. The incident is
the second within four days that has claimed lives of members of the Sunni
Arab minority at the hands of police forces, according to the Association
of Muslim Scholars. One of the dead was a Shi'ite Muslim and the rest were
Sunnis...

IRAQ: No, This Certainly Is Not Switzerland
Inter Press Service (IPS)
...Ali Nassir of the Iraqi Council for Solidarity and Peace said that
democracy was a long- term commitment. "If you want to build a house it may
take a year, but to build human beings it takes the future. The U.S. Army
didn't bring democracy." It may not have brought basic equality either. On
the way out of Camp Lima Base were two latrines, one marked "Iraqis Only"
and the other "No Iraqis -- Americans Only". Asked for an explanation, M!
ajor Booth replied that this was due to 'cultural differences'...

COMCAST KILLS EMAIL FROM 'AFTERDOWNINGSTREET' COALITION!
BRAD BLOG
The BRAD BLOG has learned that cable company and Internet service provider,
Comcast Corporation has been automatically deleting email sent to Comcast
customers with the text
"<http://www.afterdowningstreet.org>www.afterdowningstreet.org" in the body
of the email. AfterDowningStreet.org ("ADS") is the citizen's coalition
advocacy group organized to raise awareness of the leaked British memos and
minutes referred to as ! the "Downing Street Documents". Those documents,
first reported by Michael Smith of the Sunday Times suggest that the Bush
Administration had determined to topple Saddam Hussein by military means
and planned to "fix" the facts and intelligence around the policy" at least
eight months prior to receiving authorization of the U.S. Congress to wage
war in Iraq. At the same time, George W. Bush and administration officials
were routinely telling both Congress and the American people that no
tactical decisions had yet been made regarding regime change in Iraq...

The Karl Rove Scandal and Bush’s Drive for War with Iraq
Joel Wendland
...Rove leaked the name of a CIA agent who happened to be the wife of
former Ambassador Joe Wilson. Wilson had traveled to Niger in February
2002, on her suggestion to her superiors at the agency, to check on
questions about whether or not Saddam Hussein had tried to purchase nuclear
materials in that country. One might recall that in the fall of 2002,
several administration officials, including President Bush and the current
Secretary of Stat! e Condoleezza Rice, scared the American public with talk
of "mushroom clouds" appearing if war were not authorized by Congress.
Specifically, they claimed that Iraq was trying to purchase nuclear
material "from Africa." The claim turned out to be wrong and at worst an
intentional lie...

Iraq War Veteran speaks out on why he became a Conscientious Objector
Aidan Delgado, Bellaciao
...My name is Aidan Joshua Delgado, I’m 23 years old, I’m a veteran of the
2nd Iraq war, I served one year in Iraq- 6 months in Nasiriya, 6 months in
Baghdad correction facility at Abu Ghraib. I just want to say that I’m not
a politician, I’m not a general- I was an E4 specialist, I was the least of
soldiers, I’m just here to give my experience and my narrative of what I
saw in Iraq and maybe it’ll touch on some larger ! issues or bring home a
little bit of the reality from the war...

London Bombings: Cover Story Mutation Continues
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
It should not come as a surprise Osama Nazir ratted out Shahzad Tanweer.
Nazir, described as a “key al-Qaeda operative,” is locked up in Lahore,
Pakistan, accused of killing Christians and participating in a failed
attempt to assassinate Pervez Musharraf. Now we are told Shahzad Tanweer,
supposedly one of the London “suicide bombers,” traveled to Pakistan to
meet with Nazir...

Comments on the London Bombing Cover Story
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
Times Online reports: The “British-born mastermind” of the London attacks
“is believed to be connected to a senior figure who took part in an
al-Qaeda terror summit in Pakistan 16 months ago where a list of future
targets was reportedly finalized.” Indeed, the British government and the
corporate media believe we are idiots. I recall news stories about this
“terror summit” and at the time I thought: how is it Osama can organize a
con! fab—supposedly at a “mountain stronghold” in Afghanistan (or maybe it
was Waziristan), according to Rediff.com India—in 2003 and U.S.
intelligence didn’t know about it and send out one of those fancy-schmancy
Predator drones fitted with Hellfire missiles and barbeque the whole lot?...

Fortunately, It's a Nice Governmental Gang!
Raed Jarrar, Raed in the Middle
...If your child or sibling vanishes for two days then calls from the
secret service jail in any other place on earth, that would be considered a
disaster and a violation of human rights… In Iraq, however, it’s Happy
News. Because the other options include: To be tortured, executed, and
thrown in garbage by SCIRI and their Badr brigades. To be held by the Iraqi
police and left to choke to death in one of their cars. To be held by the
US t! roops then disappear and be mistreated for months in one of their
many prisons. To be kidnapped by one of the countless criminal gangs and
cost your family some tens of millions of Iraqi Dinars and/or your life...

8 Months after US-Led Siege, Insurgents Rise Again in Fallujah
Edward Wong, The New York Times
Transformed into a police state after last winter's siege, this should be
the safest city in all of Iraq. Thousands of American and Iraqi troops live
in crumbling buildings here and patrol streets laced with concertina wire.
Any Iraqi entering the city must show a badge and undergo a search at one
of six checkpoints. There is a 10 p.m. curfew. But the insurgency is rising
from the rubble nevertheless, eight months after! the American military
killed as many as 1,500 Iraqis in a costly invasion that fanned
anti-American passions across Iraq and the Arab world...

Report Shows Karl Rove May Have Lied to Federal Agents, a Federal Crime,
During Oct 2003 Testimony Into CIA Agent Leak
Jason Leopold, Axis of Logic
At Axis of Logic, we do not normally get caught up in the internecine
fighting among the thugs who bloody one another for power in the empire. We
believe the important issues that concern all of us have nothing at all to
do with the exposure of one of the enemy's secret agents working for the
CIA. The only exception to our disinterest is to note the "chinks in the
arm! or" of those who would have us believe they are invincible. It is
sometimes encouraging to see the Neocon/Bush regime weakened by the sleeze
of members like Karl Rove. From our point of view, Plame was just another
cop and we have no interest in protecting members of the police state. On
the other hand, we are also acutely aware of the many false battles waged
by the regime, hyped by their corporate media to distract from their wars,
failing economy, and other failed foreign and domestic policies. We thank
Jason Leopold for his analysis of the Rove/Plame Affair...

Baghdad rocked by serial bombings

Five car bombs have blown up in different locations across Baghdad within
hours of each other, including two attacks on Iraqi military patrols that
police sources said killed six people and wounded more than 20.
Eyewitnesses said at least one of the bombers struck a US convoy, although
there were no immediate reports of American troops among the casualties...

Love Me Tender
Chris Floyd
They were still scraping body parts out of the blasted carriages in the
London Underground last week when the terrorists brazenly announced a
harvest of blood fruits from their murderous campaign. The declaration --
bone-chilling in its moral nullity, its brutal cynicism -- was made in the
fearsome name of Jihad. That would be Asim Jihad, of course, spokesman for
the Iraqi Oil Ministry. Yes, just one day after London's agony, the state
terrorists who perpetrated the ongoing mass atrocit! y of aggressive war in
Iraq celebrated an important victory in their campaign of violence and
fear: 11 juicy oil fields are being put up for tender to international
investors, AdnKronos International reports...

Yet more on the London bombs
Xymphora
The main problem remains that it is completely ludicrous for the alleged
terrorists to have behaved the way they did. London is the most notoriously
videotaped city in the world, truly like something out of an Orwellian
nightmare (and to add insult to injury, British authorities get to gloat
over how helpful the cameras were in solving the crime). We are to believe
that this was part of a larger operation that intended to make more
terrorist attacks...

Sanded In Baghdad
Tom Fox, Electronic Iraq
...I was dismayed with what seemed, to me at least, to be very racists and
colonialist statements by almost every contractor or entrepreneur I talked
with. Having grown up the Southern U.S. and having a very racist father, it
was a very bizarre experience hearing almost the same comments being made
against Iraqis that I heard as a child being made against blacks. The same
venom, for lack of a better word, was coming out of their mouths as they
denigrated the people, cult! ure and societal norms of Iraq...

The Pakistani Connection
Peter Meyer, Serendipity
In his article "The London Explosions, the Rogue Network, Bush and Iran
Webster" Tarpley writes: One way to increase the pressure on Iran would be
to implicate a group of Iranian fanatic patsies in the London bombings.
This would not be difficult ... [London] is home to the largest
concentration of Arab and Islamic patsy groups in the entire world ... But
perhaps an Iranian patsy group would be too obvious at this time. Yes, but
a Pakistani patsy group woul! d serve the purpose, since Pakistan is
geographically adjacent to Iran...
