The Downing Street Minutes may be old news
colinb - Daily Kos
But this is new news: Jay grad killed by bomb is S.A.'s latest loss in war

talked to students in the Junior ROTC.
Flores, 18, was killed Tuesday in Iraq by a roadside bomb near Fallujah,
said retired Air Force Col. Dennis LeVan, one of Flores' ROTC instructors
at Jay (...) The fact that George Bush told his ghostwriter in 1999 that,
if given the chance, he would invade Iraq so that he could gain "political
capital" may be old news...But this is new news: Henderson Marine Killed in
Iraq : It's the second time in a week that a Southern Nevadan has died,
fighting the war on terror. Marine Corporal Jesse Jaime was killed

JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED
ILLEGAL WAR IRAQ
Grace Reid
This one is pretty hard to write. The title comes from Martin Luther King's
1963, "Why We Can't Wait." That, and his "Letter from a Birmhingam Jail"
also 1963 are the sources for the quotes here. It has probably occurred to
very few that the struggle to seek justice in the matter of the illegal war
in Iraq, and the seeking of a Resolution of Inquiry into the impeachable
offenses of GWB in the illegal war Iraq, have any correllaries with the
Civi! l Rights movement of the late 1950's and 1960's. There are more
correlaries than you might imagine...

Napalm and Downing Street: We Were Right
Political Affairs
Last March, this website reported that official and media sources had
uncovered the use of napalm by US military forces in Iraq. We wrote:
"Weapons such as mustard gas, nerve gas, and napalm have been banned by
international convention since the 1980s. Ironically, it was the claim,
later proven false, that Saddam Hussein possessed and sought to build
stockpiles of these banned weapons that led to the US invasion of Iraq in
March of 2003. The US remai! ns the lone hold out on the napalm ban
agreement and the only country that continues to use the substance. We
received some e-mails from readers (some angry, some gentle) suggesting we
had gotten the story wrong. Unfortunately, as it turns out, we were right...

Blair’s Cabinet minutes – the corporate/state media lies continue
William Bowles, I'n'I
Regardless of the eventual outcome brought about by the exposure of the
Downing Street Cabinet Minutes, the corporate/state media’s collusion with
state policy has come into the spotlight as never before. All the more
reason therefore that the connections be analysed in the context of state
policy. From the very beginning of the build-up to the invasion, the media
has played the state’s game by accepting at face value the prop! aganda
line of the existence of Iraq’s possession of WMD...

Good Morning, Iraq: Kaloogian’s Spin on the Quagmire
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Howard Kaloogian, failed aspirant in the primaries for the U.S. Senate in
the 2004 election (because the people of California know a right-wing
extremist when they see one), plans to travel to Iraq with the blessing of
CENTCOM and “lead a contingent of local and nationally syndicated radio
talk show hosts … to report on good news and successes being achieved in
Operation Iraqi Freedom that biased left-wing reporters won’t r! eport,”
according to SourceWatch (...) But if indeed MAF plans to send a gaggle or
right-wingers to Iraq to report the “good news and successes being achieved
in Operation Iraqi Freedom,” chances are they will not venture out of the
Green Zone, because if they did no doubt they would encounter a dearth of
“good news” and instead run smack into the continuing misery of the Iraq
people...

The Ultimate Deception?
Jim Lampley
A Bush-watcher website identified as TBRNews.org is reporting under the
byline of "domestic intelligence reporter" Brian Harring that the
Department of Defense is using a cynical tactic to mislead the public
regarding the true death toll for American military personnel in Iraq.
Harring claims he has an internal pdf. file from the D.O.D. which
establishes that nearly 9000 Americans have died in Operation Iraqi
Freedom, but that the official number has been held to 1713 by design!
ating as Iraq deaths only those who perish on Iraqi soil. The remainder, he
says, are military personnel who have died en route to Germany or in German
hospitals-- casualties of the war, but not listed in the official death
toll. If this is true it would explain the apparent statistical discrepancy
between dead and wounded...

US Frees Iraqi Woman Detainees After Protests
Omar Salah Al-Din, Khalid Yassin El-Yassari, IOL Correspondents
US occupation forces completed on Sunday, June 19, the release of twenty
one Iraqi women held as a bargain chip in the northern city of Mosul. "The
release came after massive protests organized by the Islamic Party and the
Islamic organization for human rights over the past three days," Nour
Al-Din Al-Hayalli, the Islamic Party's media officer in Mosul, told
IslamOnline.net. The Islamic party championed a! massive demonstration
following the Friday prayers on June 17 to press for the immediate release
of all Iraqi women in the US custody. Assembling outside the Sedek Rashan
mosque, protestors denounced the American occupation for dishonoring the
Iraqi people by detaining women. They carried photos of detained women,
demanding the government of Ibrahim Jaafari to live up to its

Right-Wingers Declare Downing Street Minutes Fake
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Right-wingers are going bananas over this one, especially on Free Republic
and Moonbat Central: Michael Smith, who broke the story about the Downing
Street Minutes in the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Times, has told the
Associated Press he “protected the identity of the source he had obtained
the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying
the originals”...

Meeting between the members of the Turkmen front in the province council,

representative of the Arab front
Turkmeneli Party
...If we take you to a government department in Kirkuk, you will find that
Human Rights are not at all respected even using one's mother tongue is not
allowed as a result of fear and injustice, people are subjected to. Saddam
has oppressed us for 35 years with a special gradual programme but the
current oppression happens with! violence and in front the American
democracy and military forces. This is what I wanted to clarify to the lady
(...) The Turkmen people and myself are honoured to die with dignity and
respect instead of being a hostage in the hands (?) who came from the north
and I think that this point of view is shared by the Arabs...

Studies Of Suicide Bombings Point Finger Back At Us
Georgie Geyer, www.rense.com
We have entered a new phase of the Iraq war since the optimism following
the Jan. 30 elections there, and the manifestations of the changes are
everywhere. Every American general who comes out of Baghdad now speaks only
in words that are hesitant, relative, depressed. Here at home, the figures
emerging from even the Pentagon are frightening: The Army and the Army
National Guard are likely to meet only 75 percent of their recruiting t!
argets in the next year...

I recently talked to a foreigner I know who lives in the Green Zone,
Saddam's old palace grounds in the centre of Baghdad. The Green Zone is
about four kilometres long and two kilometres wide. It holds the biggest
U.S. embassy in the world, the British embassy, along with several others,
the Iraqi parliament and dozens of foreign organizations and contractors.
The man I spoke to works for a telecommunications company. He said the
Green Zone is like a prison. He! wants to leave it and live else where in

What the Hell is the Downing St. Memo -- and Who Cares?
David Benjamin
If you've been paying attention to left-wing propaganda mills like Air
America radio, or studying the distant back pages of the New York Times and
USA Today, or -- perchance -- reading the Minneapolis Star-Tribune’s
upstart editorial page, you might have encountered mention of something
called the "Downing Street Memo." Yeah. What the hell is that?...

President must answer to Downing Street Memo
David Spero, Special to The Desert Sun
...This massive scandal will not go away. The president's apparently soiled
hands are dyed with the blood of more than 1,700 American soldiers and
100,000 Iraqi citizens. The potential crimes of George Bush reduce Richard
Nixon and Bill Clinton's misdeeds into subjects for a comedy act. But this
is no time for laughter. America's credibility, its conscience and soul,
stand at a crossroad. George Bush should be thoroughly investiga! ted by a
congressional committee or independent counsel. And, if these allegations
hold true, Bush should be impeached and then imprisoned for war crimes
against humanity...

Conyers Gives Both Barrels to Milbank, Shoots Himself in the Foot
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
It didn’t take long for Rep. John Conyers to respond to Dana Milbank’s
mean-spirited, sarcastic, and misleading article in the Washington Post
(...) trashing the Democratic hearing on the Downing Street Minutes held
yesterday. In a letter addressed to Michael Abramowitz, Michael Getler, and
Dana Milbank of the Post, Conyers rightly lets loose a fusillade against
Milbank for his selective and derisive coverage o! f the event and also
corrects a few of Milbank’s mischaracterizations and omissions. However, as
is habit in Washington, Conyers went out of his way to lend support to the
renegade Israeli mini-state and its settler bosses, many who are habitual
war criminals and violators of international law and various United Nations
resolutions...

Bush-Blair excuse for the Downing Street Memo doesn’t hold water
Ben Frank, Bellaciao
...Bush’s only response to the Downing Street Memo was at the June 8th
press conference with Tony Blair. Guess what - they both agreed - of course
they didn’t ’fix the facts’. Really, they both wanted peace, so they went
through the UN, and when Saddam didn’t comply, they were left with no
choice but to invade. As a matter of fact- Bush and Blair DID NOT go
through the UN. Somehow this fact seems to have been erased from ! the
collective memory of the US media. It would have been nice if just one
reporter had stood up and said, "But Sirs, with all due respect, you tried
to get a 2nd Resolution, you didn’t get it, and you invaded anyway. Why
wasn’t there a vote on the 2nd Security Council Resolution?"...

Bush wounded by anger over war
Tony Allen-Mills, The Sunday Times
INCREASING American concern about the conduct of the war in Iraq has forced
President George W Bush to sideline some of his domestic priorities in
favour of a new public relations drive to bolster confidence in the
coalition effort (...) Conflicting reports about the readiness and future
usefulness of the tens of thousands of Iraqis being trained by the
coalition to take over security duties have fuelled concern among
Republican officials who see a! capable home-grown force as America’s only
hope for a dignified withdrawal from Iraq. “We always accentuated the
positive and never prepared the public for the worst,” complained Lindsey
Graham, a South Carolina senator. “People are dying in larger numbers than
we thought and the insurgency seems to be growing stronger, not weaker”...

...In a bulletin posted at 7:50pm Mecca time Saturday evening, the Mafkarat
al-Islam correspondent on the outskirts of al-Qa’im reported that at that
moment the city had been under a savage air raid for half an hour. US F-16
and F-18 fighter bombers were blasting al-Qa’im, every part of which shook
with the reverberation of the mas! sive bombs. The correspondent reported
that the US aircraft were pouring dozens of container bombs – each one
holding dozens of anti-personnel cluster bombs – and firing guided missiles
in an unprecedentedly violent and indiscriminant assault on the city...
