Assumptive and Malicious Disinformation
Ahmed Al-Habbabi
That Saddam was a ruthless ruler is hardly debatable. That he was genocidal
and a reveler in evil is convenient propaganda that is aimed primarily at
the "left" to confuse the anti-war movement and blur the nature of the
conflict. He was just as dictatorial as all his neighbors and many others,
but perhaps more ruthless in suppressing active opposition. However, he was
also a true revolutionary and achieved much that is positive for Iraq, and
provided supp! ort to revolutionary movements in the Arab world and Africa.
He reclaimed his country's resources, embarked on serious development, and
became an obstacle to imperial designs on the region. This is the basic
reason why he was singled out for demonization by imperialism as well as
the oil booty that lay in wait there. And he could not be bought...

OPERATION BURY 'EM ALIVE
Malcom Lagauche
When we look back to the beginning of the 15-year U.S.-Iraq war, we recall
incidents that have been forgotten, or were not given public attention at
the time. These occurrences are important because they kept escalating the
severity of the violence thrust against Iraq from 1991 until today. Once
one method was accepted, another came forth with even more dire
consequences. On the first two days of the ground war during Desert Storm
(February 24 and 25, 1991), U.S. troops, u! sing tanks and earthmovers that
had been specially fitted with plows, buried thousands of Iraqi soldiers
alive...

Iraq's Catch-22
Robert Dreyfuss, TomPaine.com
...The Catch-22 is this: To gain legitimacy in the eyes of Iraq's
population, and to avoid being seen as puppets, the new government has to
distance itself from the U.S. occupation forces. Doing so, however, is
impossible, since the newly elected regime wouldn't last a week without the
protection of U.S. forces. So they are stuck in a fatal embrace...

Riverbend talks about her life, Iraq, and the world at large -- and how her

Lakshmi Chaudhry, AlterNet

introduced herself to her readers: "I'm female, Iraqi and 24. I survived
the war. That's all you need to know. It's all that matters these days
anyway." Nearly two years later, the readers of "Baghdad Burning" know a
whole lot more - both about Riverb! end and Iraq. We now know that she has
not just survived the war, but prevailed over its horrors, emerging from
its ruins as a passionate advocate for her people and an incisive critic of

The Psychology of Abu Ghraib: Elite Thought and Iraqi Prisoner Abuse
PAUL DAVID COLLINS
The Shadow, the fictional hero of pulp magazines and classic radios, used

lurks in the hearts of men?" Recent reports of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib
have had the world asking the same question (...) No doubt, the psychology
that motivated these atrocities will be examined for years to come...

Washington Post glorifies US military "ruthlessness" in Iraq
James Cogan, WSWS
A disturbing article by Washington Post journalist Steve Fainaru, published
on April 13, serves to both justify and promote a colonial and homicidal
mentality among American troops fighting in Iraq. The piece, headlined "In
Mosul, a Battle 'Beyond Ruthless'," dwells on the exploits of Sergeant
First Class Domingo Ruiz, a 39-year-old US soldier who grew up in the
ghettos of Brooklyn and Puerto Rico. Ruiz is part of the 3rd Battalion, 21!
st Infantry Regiment, a unit equipped with the Army's new Stryker wheeled
assault vehicle and currently on deployment in the volatile Iraqi city of
Mosul...

IRAQ: Doctors fear hepatitis outbreak
IRIN
Doctors in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, fear an outbreak of hepatitis,
following an increase in cases reported by the Infectious Diseases Control
Centre (IDSC) last week. Officials said the increase was due to poor sewage
control, particularly in suburbs of the city. Dr Abdul Jalil, director of
the IDSC, told IRIN that there had been a 30 percent increase in hepatitis
cases in March 2005 compared to the same period in 2004, and that open
sewers and polluted water were exa! cerbating the problem...

The Grim Reaper, Riding a Firetruck in Iraq Marines Recount Dramatic
Assault At Base Near Syria
Steve Fainaru, Washington Post Foreign Service
... This true-life nightmare occurred on Monday last week. The attack on
this remote Marine outpost abutting the Syrian border caused only minor
injuries, but it signaled a dramatic change in the methods of the
insurgents, who have staged mostly guerrilla-style hit-and-run attacks
against the U.S. military for two years. In interviews and in after-action!
reports, Marines who successfully defended the base that morning described
a sophisticated assault that involved 50 to 100 insurgents...

Aid worker uncovered America's secret tally of Iraqi civilian deaths
Andrew Buncombe, Independent
A week before she was killed by a suicide bomber, humanitarian worker Marla
Ruzicka forced military commanders to admit they did keep records of Iraqi
civilians killed by US forces. Tommy Franks, the former head of US Central
Command, famously said the US army "don't do body counts", despite a
requirement to do so by the Geneva Conventions. But in an essay Ms Ruzicka
wrote a week before her death on Saturday and publ! ished yesterday, the
28-year-old revealed that a Brigadier General told her it was "standard
operating procedure" for US troops to file a report when they shoot a
non-combatant...
