A DAY OF INFAMY
Malcom Lagauche
...I went online to publish the article and opened an e-mail message before
I was to go to my website. In it, was a message from a reader in Canada.
We'll call him Martin. A few weeks ago, he wrote to me and said he enjoyed
my column. Then, he told me he was a blind Palestinian who suffers from a
hearing deficiency as well. He has lived in Canada for almost 20 years. His
message floored me. With all that is going on, most have forgotten about
April 9, 2003, the day the U.S. calls "! the liberation of Iraq." Martin
definitely has not forgotten and he will spend the day in isolation. I
called him to get permission to run his article and he consented. Then, he
told of his sadness that this day is not being commemorated by many Arabs
as one of the most disastrous in history...

April 9th, the years ago: "The Liberation of Iraq":
Iraq: 'The Gate of God Opens Wider'
Felicity Arbuthnot, www.globalresearch.ca
It is two years since the illegal invasion, destruction of humanity's
history, the subsequent slaughters, the attempt to dehumanize Iraqis, the
people of Mesopotamia which brought the world all we call civilized. A
people whose deaths, in the words of the inimitable Major General Mark
Kimmitt, 'it is not productive to count' and who, when asked about US
carnage in the cra! dle of civilization responded 'change the channel ...'
For those of us unable to 'change the channel', the beauty, the generosity
and the horrors of Iraq's suffering under embargo and occupation will for
ever haunt...

Who forged Iraq uranium documents?
Xymphora
...This is consistent with my old theory that the documents are the work of
Iraqi dissidents associated with Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress. The
documents would have flowed from Chalabi to Ledeen to SISME, and thus would
have been laundered to make them appear as legitimate products discovered
by a legitimate intelligence agency. This sophistication in the use of
foreign intelligence agencies appears to be part of the modus operandi of
the neocons, and may derive fro! m the particular expertise of Ledeen and
Perle, developed in various shenanigans going back to the 1970's (in
particular, or course, Iran-Contra)...

Lawyers Against the War are After Bush
Norman (Otis) Richmond, The Black Commentator
...Gail Davidson, Co-Chair of Lawyers against the War (LAW) has laid seven
torture charges against U. S. President George W. Bush. If Davidson, a
Vancouver, Canada based-lawyer and her organization have their way
President Bush will be tried in Canada on these charges. The charges were
laid when President Bush visited Canada on November 30, 2004. These charges
concern the well-known abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, photos of !
which shocked the world last year, as well as similar abuses at Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba that have emerged more recently...

No Intelligence Failure in Iraq
Political Failure the United States
M. JUNAID ALAM, CounterPunch
Before America bombed and burst asunder the bodies of tens of thousands of
breathing Iraqis, it quietly interred the corpse of its own moral
integrity. By nurturing the most brazen lies to press its case for war,
America buried its moral commitment to the principles of truth and reason,
enabling the incineration of innocents abroad. The deadly result of
abandoning these principles will neither be forgotten! by history nor
forgiven by a future which embittered histories produce - unless we move to
change the present...

Support for Iraqi rebellion deepens internationally
Freedom Socialist Newspaper
As the war against Iraq drags on and casualties and exposés of outrages
mount, so too does the number of upfront defenders of the Iraqi rebellion
against U.S. occupation. Many of these supporters will be among the
demonstrators filling streets around the world on March 19 and 20 to
protest the war against Iraq on its second anniversary. The Freedom
Socialist Party and Radical Women have initiated internationalist and
anti-imperialist ! contingents as part of these rallies in several cities...

Herr Doctor Kissinger Laments Advocacy
Kurt Nimmo
...I think Kissinger was attempting to get at something a bit different,
namely that there are uncensored visuals on the internet, for instance the
dead and wounded in Iraq, and these tend to elicit strong emotional
response. Moreover, I think Henry is lamenting the fact institutions no
longer have the ideological market cornered. It is no longer so easy to
fool people and thus keep them down on the farm...

Imperialism, Iraq, and the right to resist
Megan Cornish, Freedom Socialist Newspaper
...The U.S. regularly overthrows the governments of other nations; it needs
to be stopped, and its people need to have the guts to say so and take
action. In the real world, this means the movement against what is
happening in Iraq must do more than simply be pacifist or antiwar. There
are two sides in the Iraq war. One is an imperialist aggressor waging a
ferocious war for profits and global domination at the expe! nse of the
lives, social conditions, and rights not only of Iraqis, but of its own
people. The other is a resistance that, by defending besieged Iraq, is
challenging the very right of imperialism to exist. The question boils down
to: which side are you on?...

Iraq's new prime minister spent years trying to topple Saddam - with
support of militant groups, Iranian clerics
AP
Ibrahim al-Jaafari spent more than two decades as an exile trying to topple
Saddam Hussein's government - with the close support of Iran and an Islamic
militant group linked to terrorism. Now, as Iraq's new interim prime
minister, he has asserted he is a moderate, even as some have questioned
his ties to Iran and his work for Iraq's first Shiite Islamic political
party - the Islamic Dawa Party - of! which he is spokesman...

Models of Occupation
Israel is the Key to Bush's Iraq Strategy
NEVE GORDON, CounterPunch
...Israel's occupation is crucial for understanding Iraq for two essential
reasons. First, like Israel, the U.S. has made a distinction between the
occupied inhabitants and their resources. The Bush Administration's idea is
to allow the Iraqis to manage themselves and in this way to cut the cost of
the occupation, while at the same time continuing to control the rich oil
fields (...) Second, whereas Israel was cert! ainly not the first country
to stage democratic elections in an occupied context, it was the first
power to reintroduce this practice in a post-colonial age so as to
legitimize an ongoing occupation...

Attacks on Abu Ghraib highlight continuing Iraqi armed resistance
James Cogan, WSWS
On April 2, Iraqi insurgents launched one of the highest profile attacks of
the two-year guerilla war against the US-led occupation: an assault on the
Abu Ghraib prison complex in Baghdad where thousands of Iraqis are being
detained. As dusk fell, as many as 50 well-armed guerillas unleashed a
barrage of mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades at a prison
watchtower, giving cover to suicide bombers who detonated two explosive-!
filled vehicles in attempts to blow a hole in the prison walls...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 8 April 2005. Translated

the main road in ad-Dulu'iyah, north of Baghdad ! at 11am Friday morning.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an officer in the

Call for inquiry into journo deaths in Iraq
The Sydney Morning Herald.
Two US trade unions called on the administration of President George Bush
today to establish an independent inquiry into the "record number of
deaths" of journalists covering the Iraq war. The Newspaper Guild-CWA and
the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists wrote to Bush on
the second anniversary of an attack by US forces on the Palestine Hotel in
Baghdad on April 8, 2003, in which two journalists were killed.

A sham election, another puppet government
Freedom Socialist Newspaper
...While U.S. politicians trumpeted the election as a triumph of democracy,
the sordid truth is that it was just another feeble attempt at
window-dressing the brutal occupation. That is probably why less than 60
percent of eligible voters turned out — even though, as independent
journalist Dahr Jamail reported, many were threatened with losing their
food rations unless they did.
Sunni Arabs, who have been the core of the insurgency, mostly boycotted.
This was to make the point that an election under occupation is
illegitimate, and also in protest of the destruction of Falluja, which
showed there is no democracy under occupation...

Former Iraqi minister Tareq Aziz will never turn on Saddam at trial: lawyer
AFP
A former top minister in Saddam Hussein's cabinet, Tareq Aziz, will never
testify against the ex-Iraqi president when he goes on trial in Baghdad
along with other members of the toppled regime, his lawyer said. "Tareq
Aziz told me that he would never attack Saddam Hussein during his trial,
that it would not be right for him to do that," his attorney Badi Aref
Izzat said in an interview in Paris. "But if he is freed, he will write a !
book where he would tell what he knows. He knows he is innocent. Tareq Aziz
is weak physically but strong politically," Izzat said...

investigation into a 5 April 2005 incident near the northern city of Mosul
in which US soldiers shot and wounded a freelance cameraman working for the
US television network CBS News. The organisation noted that it is not the
first time US soldiers have shot a cameraman after mistaking his camera for
a gun. Mazen Dana, a Palestinian working for the British news agency

Iraq assembly elects its first speaker
Aljazeera.net
Iraqi lawmakers have ended days of bickering by electing a Sunni Arab as
their parliament speaker, clearing a hurdle that has held up the formation
of a new government (...) Some criticized Sunday's choice of Industry
Minister Hajim al-Hassani, one of only 17 Sunni Arabs in parliament, saying
the new speaker didn't represent the Sunni community. Usama Abdulfatah, a
30-year-old architect, said al-Hassani's support last year of the US
assault on the militant str! onghold of Falluja showed he "does not have
beliefs and will never do anything against his benefit." Even though his
Iraqi Islamic Party pulled out of the government over the issue, al-Hassani
refused to leave his job. "How could we just trust such a traitor?"
Abdulfatah asked...

We got it wrong on Iraq WMD, intelligence chiefs finally admit
Richard Norton-Taylor - The Guardian
Intelligence chiefs have admitted for the first time that claims they made
about Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction were wrong and have not
been substantiated. The admission is revealed in the annual report of the
parliamentary intelligence and security committee which also sharply
criticises the lack of communication between ministers and the Secret
Intelligence Service, MI6.

Soldier refuses Army's order to go to Iraq
Rosita Johnson
Carl Webb, a U.S. soldier who had re-enlisted in 2001, found out two weeks
before his contract was up in 2004 that the Army was extending his
enlistment — without his consent — under what it calls its "stop loss"
program. The Army told Webb to report for training with the Texas National
Guard at Fort Hood in preparation for going to Iraq. "I knew at that moment
I could not go to Iraq," Webb explained to his audience at Calvary Church
here March 28. "I did ! not want to be part of a killing machine in an
unethical and illegal U.S. aggression"...

New puppet government takes shape in Iraq
Peter Symonds, WSWS
...There is no guarantee that this laboriously constructed political house
of cards will last for long. Its chief task is to formulate a new
constitution by August, which, after approval by referendum, paves the way
for fresh national elections early next year. But the drafting of a
constitution will only raise in a sharper form all of the conflicting
political interests that have held up the process of selecting a
government. None of the rival ethnic ! and religious factions has any solid
base of support. All the major parties supported the illegal US-led
invasion of Iraq and, in some cases, were on the US payroll for more than a
decade...
