US detained children in Abu Ghraib
Aljazera.net
An 8-year-old was among the children detained by US soldiers at Iraq's
infamous Abu Ghraib jail, a former prison commander has said.
Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski told officials investigating prisoner
abuse at Abu Ghraib that the child was crying and wanted to see his mother.
Karpinski's statement is among hundreds of pages of US Army records about
Abu Ghraib the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released on Thursday...

SADDAM HUSSEIN AND REALITY
Malcom Lagauche
We all saw the photos in December 2003 of a disheveled Saddam Hussein after
he was pulled out of a "spider hole" in a town near Tikrit. The
administration laughed and the U.S. public made jokes about him and his
hiding place. The room was dirty. There was an empty Spam can. The story
was that he was holed up here and was totally irrelevant to Iraq. His day
was done and he was now in the hands of the liberators. Guess what? Nothing
of this scenario was true (...) From var! ious sources, we now have a
totally different story than the one force-fed to us by the U.S.
administration. Instead of Saddam Hussein being a coward who fled and was
caught in a hole in the ground, he now is the president, who, under siege,
met publicly with his people on April 9, 2003 (we saw viedo of this on U.S.
TV), after personally being involved with several battles against the
invaders, and who created a network of resistance while tens of thousands
of U.S. military people were looking for him...

The Sgrena Hit: How They Did It, and Why
Evidence of a Precision Ambush
Fintan Dunne, Editor BreakForNews.com, Wagnews.blogspot.com
By combining photo evidence and eyewitness accounts of the Baghdad airport
shooting in which Giuliana Sgrena was wounded and Nicola Calipari killed, a
compelling picture of a precision ambush emerges. This analysis is
sharpened by also considering the operational constraints upon any planned
assassination of the troublesome Italian reporter. Such a killing would
have to be! palusibly deniable as a "mishap" and would have to avoid the
slaughter of three intelligence agents in the vehicle...

IRA and Sinn Fein in Iraq
Pepe Escobar
...Even though the Sunni guerrillas are substantially united against a new
Iraqi government monopolized by exiles who lived in luxury in Iran or the
West during the Saddam Hussein era - which is the exact profile of the UIA
leaders, this Sinn Fein strand of the resistance would be willing to
negotiate with the new Shi'ite government...

Sgrena's Ordeal Highlights World's Racist View of Iraq
Alexander Gainem, IslamOnline.net
...Iraqis have been facing this danger on a daily basis and almost every
day there are dead Iraqis brought into morgues after being cut down by US
gunfire. But no coverage for the Iraqi dead. No public outcry in the world.
No debate in the blogs. No mention in FOX or otherwise. No, they don't have
pretty Latin names and dirty-blonde hair. They don't have their own columns
and candlelight vigils held for them on the streets o! f Europe. When they
are killed their bodies are not carried on the shoulders of state police
and given posthumous awards. They are not called heroes by the world
press...

UK and US governments must monitor Iraq casualties
Owen Dyer
An international group of public health experts has called on the US and UK
governments to commission an independent inquiry into Iraqi war related
casualties. "We believe that the joint US-UK failure to make any effort to
monitor Iraqi casualties is, from a public health perspective, wholly
irresponsible," says the public statement, signed by 23 experts in public
health and epidemiology from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada,
Spain, and Aus! tralia. "We have waited too long for this information"...

The Rendering
Chris Floyd
...The invasion of Iraq, itself a war crime of staggering dimensions,
simply extended this long-established and officially sanctioned system of
brutality to a new arena. And to thousands of new victims, the overwhelming
majority of whom were innocent of any crime, as the Red Cross reported.
While the investigative work of Seymour Hersh and others in exposing the
horrors of Abu Ghraib is indeed laudable, it should not have come as any
surprise. The atrocities detailed in the revelations w! ere identical to
those the Bush Regime had openly acknowledged as standard practice just
months before...

Pentagon Clears Top Personnel, Policies in Abuses
Vicki Allen, Reuters
The Pentagon said its policies and top officials did not cause the
mistreatment of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, but in a
report released on Thursday cited a series of missed opportunities to
correct lapses that led to the abuses. The latest and most wide-ranging
abuse report, by Navy inspector general Vice Adm. Albert Church, largely
tracks the Pentagon's previous contention that its leaders were not
directly responsible ! for sexual and physical mistreatment of prisoners. A
21-page unclassified summary of the report was to be released at a Senate
Armed Services Committee hearing. The full 368-page report is classified.
The summary obtained by Reuters found "no single, over-arching explanation"
for the abuses...

MoveOn.org: Making Peace With the War in Iraq
Norman Solomon, CommonDreams.org
Sadly, it has come to this. Two years after the invasion of Iraq, the
online powerhouse MoveOn.org -- which built most of its member base with a
strong antiwar message -- is not pushing for withdrawal of U.S. troops from
Iraq. With a network of more than 3 million "online activists," the MoveOn
leadership has decided against opposing the American occupation of Iraq.
During the recent bloody months, none of MoveOn's action alerts have a!
ddressed what Americans can do to help get the U.S. military out of that
country...

Burlington Votes to Bring the Troops Home...Now!
Vermont Versus the War
JOHN MARC LEAS, COLLEEN McLAUGHLIN and ASHLEY SMITH, CounterPunch
"A town meeting revolt over the Iraq war" is what The Christian Science
Monitor called Vermont's historic votes for anti-war resolutions in 49 of
57 cities and towns. The resolutions passed not only in traditional liberal
strong holds, but also in rural areas usually dismissed as conservative.
The votes demonstrated overwhelming anti-war sentiment. In the state's la!
rgest city, the Burlington Anti-War Coalition (BAWC) proposed a resolution
(full text below) that called for bringing the troops home now. It passed
with 65.2% of the vote...

Butt Prints in the Sand
Sheila Samples, www.dissidentvoice.org
... Those who don't read foreign media will never know that the
International Criminal Tribunal for Iraq (ICTI) this week found both Bush
and Tony Blair guilty of a series of charges, and found they deserve life
sentences for war crimes and genocide in Iraq. Kohki Abe, a professor of
law at Tokyo's Kanagawa University, said Bush and Blair should face the
"maximum penalty available." He added that they should have been tried in
the International Crim! inal Court, but admitted that, for "political
reasons," they would not be prosecuted. Abe explained the ICTI had been set
up so that acts such as those Bush and Blair are guilty of "do not go past
without the criminals behind them being tried"...

"I feel that there has been an enormous betrayal of truth and principle"
An interview with the mother and widow of a former contractor in Iraq
Rick Kelly, WSWS
Tim Eysselinck worked for RONCO Consulting Corp. in Iraq between August
2003 and February 2004. He headed a de-mining team that was responsible for
the clearance of land mines, cluster bombs and other ordinance. Tim
developed post-traumatic stress disorder, and his experiences in Iraq left
him disillusioned with the war that he had previously sup! ported. On April
21, 2004, he committed suicide at his home in Windhoek, Namibia, two months

All the Good Torture Jobs Are Being Sent Overseas
Igor Volsky

Morality extends beyond the bedroom. Yet Americans are still focused on the
mating habits of their fellow citizens. When we have sex, with whom we have
sex and what results in the wake of that sex has preoccupied and often
outraged the public. On the contrary, America's direct participation in
humiliating, immoral and illegal prisoner abuse has garnered only modest
indignation. Popular media and Congressional reactionaries have said
relatively little of the moral implications of such behavior...

Iraq war stories play tricks on the mind
Anna Salleh, ABC Science Online
Research on the way people processed media reports about the Iraq war tells
us more about how we create our beliefs and memories. Psychologist
Professor Stephan Lewandowsky of the University of Western Australia and
team report their study of more than 800 people from Australia, the US and
Germany, in the March issue of the journal Psychological Science.
Lewandowsky says the study, which was conducted in 2003 during the closing
phases of the! war and soon afterwards, was triggered by the number of
retractions that occurred in the media at the time...

US soldiers accused of sex assaults
Suzanne Goldenberg, The Guardian
Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Brigade - the same military unit whose
troops fired on the car carrying the freed Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena
- were under investigation last year for raping Iraqi women, US army
documents reveal. Four soldiers were alleged to have raped the two women
while on guard duty in a Baghdad shopping precinct. A US army investigator
interviewed several soldiers from the military unit, the 1-15th battalion
of the 3rd In! fantry Brigade - but did not locate or interview the Iraqi
women involved - before shutting down the inquiry for lack of evidence...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 9 March 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice.
...In a dispatch posted at 1:50pm Mecca time Wednesday afternoon, Mafkarat
al-Islam reported that a short while before Iraqi Resistance forces had
begun bombarding the western parts of the US as-Saqr ("the Falcon") base in
al-Habbaniyah, about 80km west of Baghdad. The western parts of the base
are known as "al-Hadbah" ("the Hights") and it is there that the he!
adquarters of the US forces in the western regions of Iraq are located. The
correspondent reported that at the time of writing the Americans were
replying with artillery fire at the source of the Resistance attack. But
the Resistance was still firing Katyusha rockets and 120mm mortar shells
into the US base from which plumes of black and white smoke were rising
into the sky...

Axisof Logic Editorial Board
...Yesterday, I spoke with a retired, career military man who fought in
other wars. He spoke out against the war in Iraq for the first time. He
told me, "At the beginning of this war, I thought it was the right thing to
do. Now I realize that it's wrong. The president and congress are turning
the whole world ! upside down and they've given the world reason to hate
America". The majority of U.S. citizens have turned against this war,
including many who once supported it. Talk to people and you may be
surprised who may agree with you! Ask them to join the March 19, 20
