Inferno Falluja
Il racconto di chi ha visto
Dahr Jamail, il manifesto

Soldiers tried to cover up alleged abuses, files reveal
Gail Gibson
American soldiers accused of detainee abuses tried to cover up their
actions in at least two cases, allegedly threatening an Iraqi man with
indefinite detention unless he recanted his claims of severe beatings and
destroying photographs showing mock executions of Afghan detainees to
prevent "another public outrage" after the Abu Ghraib prison scandal broke,
military records released Thursday show...

Iraq Veterans Against War
Amadee Braxton and Derrick O'Keefe
...I think our organization is unique, because we're calling for immediate
withdrawal of troops. We don't think any slow, prolonged withdrawal is
going to solve the problems in Iraq. We think that the U.S. military is an
occupying force in Iraq, and the longer we stay there, the more resentment
and destruction and death will occur there. And we feel that if you really
want to support the troops, you need to demand that they come home now...

The New Inquisition
Lydia Howell, www.dissidentvoice.org
Some questions are haunting me more and more these days. How many more of
our civil liberties are Americans willing to lose as long as they're told
it's to "prevent terrorism"? How many thousands of people (mostly Iraqi and
Afghani people, but also Canadian and American citizens) can be put under
"preventive detention" for "national security" before we become horrified?
Call this by an accurate rather than Orwellian name: thousands are in
prisons, without ch arges, without trials, without conviction for any
crime. Few have access to lawyers or human rights monitors...

Demand Accounting of Journalists' Deaths in Iraq
Danny Schechter, Media Channel, ILCA Associate Member
CNN chief news executive Eason Jordan quit late last week amid a furor over
remarks he allegedly made about American soldiers intentionally killing
journalists in Iraq. Jordan delivered the remarks while sitting on an
off-the-record panel of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland...

Iraq Insurgents Can Conduct 60 Strikes Daily -Pentagon
Vicki Allen, Reuters
The Pentagon has found that Iraqi insurgents can conduct up to 60 strikes a
day and occasionally more, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff
said on Thursday. "We've tracked the number of attacks per day and what
they can do is 50 to 60 attacks that they are able to conduct countrywide,
with spikes. And that seems to be their capacity," Air Force Gen. Richard
Myers told the Senate Armed Services Committee...

$9 Billion is 'Missing', and Republicans Refuse to Investigate
Ben Frank
There are 6 Congressional Committees investigating the Oil-for-Food (UN)
scandal, yet not a single Republican Committee Chairman will call a hearing
to investigate the whereabouts of 9 billion dollars missing in action. What
has emerged recently is that the corruption is beyond the scope that anyone
could have possibly imagined:

Regaining My Humanity
CODEPINK
Great news! Camilo Mejia Released from Prison We were delighted to receive
a phone call yesterday, February 15, from Camilo Mejia, letting us know
that he has just been released from prison. Some of you might remember
Camilo, a courageous soldier who spent more than 7 years in the military, 8
months fighting in Iraq, came home for a 2-week furlough, and decided that
he could not—in good conscience—return to Iraq.

False Pride of the "super outlaw state"
Raymond Ponziny,thepeoplesvoice.org
... In two years the Bush administration has killed over 100,000, and
wounded over 500,000 innocent men, women, and children in Afghanistan and
Iraq in the name of Democracy and freedom (...) Today the world is told
constantly that America is in a so-called 'never-ending war' against
terrorism. But over the past 35 years American leaders have been the single
greatest purveyors of terrorist acts throughout the world. The US
government or th eir CIA trained mercenary forces have used terror-bombing
campaigns against unarmed civilian populations in many countries...

The U.S. scheme for post-election Iraq
Lee Sustar, Socialist Worker
NOW THAT the results of the Iraqi election are finally in, Washington wants
the winning parties to choose between its two favored candidates for prime
minister. One is economist Adel Abd al-Mahdi, who used his role in the
Iraqi transitional government to hand over the country's economy to U.S.
oil companies. The other is Ahmad Chalabi, the discredited favorite of
Pentagon hawks who helped George W. Bush sell his war on bogus pretenses...

The second wave
New books, new groups fuel smoldering resurgence of 9/11 skeptics movement
John Kaminski
It came as a big — and pleasant — surprise to me. In a chance conversation
with a complete stranger at the car wash, I screwed up my courage and dared
to say it. "You know ... our own government was behind 9/11!" I held my
breath. My eyebrows scrunched up in anticipation of some mindwashed
backlash of preprogrammed patriotic outrage. The guy turned slowly and
looked me squarely in the eye. "I know," he s aid, his furrowed brow
mirroring all the painful pathos that has hogtied all the hearts in America
these past three years And then I pushed the envelope. "And you know ...
all those people dead in Iraq — thousands of Americans and a hundred
thousand Iraqis — all because of lies"...

"They are Arabs and you can't trust them"
Ferry Biedermann
...The Kurds, almost to a man, are even more ferocious in their attitude
toward the local Sunni Arab population. They refer to Sunni Arabs as
murderous "dogs," two-faced liars, animals and other epithets that indicate
a deep distrust and even hatred of a group clearly regarded as an enemy
(...) Of the approximately 140,000 peshmerga, a little less than a third
are integrated into the new Iraqi armed forces. But the integration is only
in name. The units ha ve a double structure: peshmerga and Iraqi. One
colonel at the "Fermandiya," the sprawling peshmerga headquarters in Dohuk,
dismissively said of one officer, "He's only a general in the Iraqi
structure. In the peshmerga, I outrank him"...

The Anti-Empire Report
What Do the Imperial Mafia Really Want?
William Blum, www.dissidentvoice.org
After what was humorously designated an "election" in Iraq, there was a
marked increase in calls for the United States to announce a timetable for
withdrawal from that unhappy land. Senator Kennedy, The Brookings
Institution, and a British government official were amongst numerous of the
influential class to propose such action. The rationale behind the timing
of these requests, one would assume, is that now that Iraq has displayed a
measure of what the White House calls "democracy", the United States can
and should declare, once again, "mission accomplished" and leave, without
loss of face. Such a proposal might make sense if this thing called
democracy was indeed the reason the United States invaded and occupied
Iraq...

WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON? How can we move forward?
The future of the antiwar movement
SHARON SMITH, Socialist Worker
...There is a student rebellion in the making, coalescing around opposition
to the war and its military recruiters--with students by the hundreds
defying threats of disciplinary action. Despite their potential to
transform the political landscape, however, the significance of these
militant student actions has so far escaped the leaders of the nation's
established antiwar organizations. Indeed, aft er fostering the illusion
that supporting pro-war, neoliberal John Kerry represented the only
"realistic" strategy for those who oppose the war, these antiwar leaders
now seem to have learned all the wrong lessons from Kerry's defeat in
November...

Iraqi Died While Hung From Wrists
SETH HETTENA, Associated Press Writer
An Iraqi whose corpse was photographed with grinning U.S. soldiers at Abu
Ghraib died under CIA interrogation while suspended by his wrists, which
had been handcuffed behind his back, according to investigative reports
reviewed by The Associated Press. The death of the prisoner, Manadel
al-Jamadi, became known last year when the Abu Ghraib scandal broke. The
U.S. military said back then that it had been ruled a homicide. But the
exact circumst ances of the death were not disclosed at the time...

John "Death Squad" Negroponte Nominated as DNI
Kurt Nimmo
It figures, in fact makes perfect sense: Iran-Contra criminal and death
squad facilitator, John Negroponte, currently "ambassador" to occupied
Iraq, will fill the new position of director of national intelligence. "The
director's responsibility is straightforward and demanding. John will make
sure those whose duty it is to defend America have the information we need
to make the right decisions," said Bush upon announcing Negroponte's
appointment to the cont rived post...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 16 February 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice.
...In a dispatch posted at 1:59pm Wednesday Mecca time, the correspondent
for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the command of the puppet police in the
city of Hit, west of Baghdad had announced its resignation a short while
before. The correspondent said that 1,600 members of the puppet police
announced that they were resigning from the US-installed force in Hit and
Hadithah. The cities are now free of all puppet police. At that point, the
head of the local puppet council in the city of Hit told Mafkarat al-Islam
that the two cities have effectively "fallen" to the Resistance, since
there is no authority in them representing the American-installed puppet
regime...

First stop Damascus - next stop Tehran?
al-Hariri assassination followed by character assassination
William Bowles
...Recent utterances by the Bush administration about Syria have a
predictably ominous ring to them that when coupled to the massive car bomb
that killed the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, fit a
pattern that prepares the ground for more aggressive actions, more than
likely to be carried out by its proxy in the region, Israel...
