Lawsuit Against Rumsfeld Threatens US-German Relations
DW staff/AFP
The Pentagon expressed concern Monday over a criminal complaint filed in
Germany against US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other officials
over the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, warning that "frivolous lawsuits" could
affect the broader US-German relationship. The complaint was filed in
Berlin on Nov. 30 by the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights
(CCR) and Berlin's Republican Lawyers' Association on behalf of four Iraqis
who were a lleged to have been mistreated by US soldiers. Besides Rumsfeld,
former CIA director George Tenet, Undersecretary of Defense for
Intelligence Steven Cambone, Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, Brigadier
General Janis Karpinski and five other military officers who served in Iraq
were named in the complaint, which seeks an investigation into their role
in the prisoner abuses at Abu Ghraib...

Iraq's prime minister says trials of Saddam regime start next week
MSNBC News Services
Interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said Tuesday that trials of top figures
in Saddam Hussein's ousted regime will begin next week, but a senior Iraqi
official told Reuters that the announcement was an effort by Allawi to
generate pre-election attention and that more time was needed to arrange
the trials (...) Allawi also said a mass grave believed to hold about 500
bodies was found near the city of Sulaimaniyah, 162 miles northeast of
Baghdad. It appeared he was referring to grave site reported last week by
an official in the region, who had initially announced a mass grave had
been found possibly containing 500 bodies; when pressed later, he said two
skeletons had been found so far.

Documents reveal Iraq prisoner abuse
Aljazeera.net
The US Navy has investigated a number of alleged abuses of Iraqi prisoners
by US Marines, including an alleged mock execution of four Iraqi juveniles.
The revelations follow the release on Tuesday of internal US Navy documents
as a result of a court order. Obtained by the American Civil Liberties
Union (ACLU), the documents show that marines were punished in some
instances while other cases were closed after investigations concluded the
allegations could not be su bstantiated. The ACLU said the documents showed
that abuse and even torture of detainees by marines in Iraq was

Pentagon and Bush White House Caught in More Lies: Don't Depend on U.S.
Media To Show the Lies or to Tell You the Truth
Sam Hamod, editor, www.todaysalternativenews.com
...Bush's constant calling of Allawi as the "legitimate" ruler of Iraq is
another lie the Pentagon and the White House have used for over a year. The
whole world knows that Allawi is merely a puppet put into place, ala Vichy
in France during WWII, who was put into place by the Nazi regime of
Hitler--but Bush and the Pentagon keep referring to him a s the "legitimate
leader" of Iraq. The American people hear this lie and believe it because
no reporter or mass media outlet dares to speak the truth on this matter.
So, the lies are not just to go out to others, but are used in an Orwellian
fashion on the American public...

Iraq's Chalabi comes in from the cold
Khaled Yacoub Oweis, Reuters
Just months after falling out with the United States and being written off
by his rivals as politically washed up, Ahmad Chalabi is back in from the
cold.(...) Chalabi used his connections with influential Shi'ite cleric
Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani to help draw up a mostly Shi'ite list backed by
the Iranian-born scholar, people familiar with the list said (...) Part of
Chalabi's resurgence is owed to his alliance with Moqtada al-Sadr, the
young anti-U .S. cleric who has challenged the Shi'ite establishment led by
Sistani and the government...

Ralph Nader on the Ohio Recount, Bush's Cabinet Reshuffle and the White
House "Lowballing" of U.S. Casualties in Iraq
Democracy Now!
...I mean, first of all, Bush is deliberately low-balling U.S. casualties.
If there are injuries in non-combat situations, even though it's hostile
territory in Iraq, large numbers of diseases like sandfly disease, severe
mental trauma, none of these are mentioned. So, the actual injured casualty
toll, if you include diseases is more than triple the official amount. And
I have been g oing after the White House for six-seven months on this;
there's been no response. I sent it to the Kerry campaign saying that you
should run with this. No response...

Iraq: Government Deal With a 'Merchant of Death'?
Michael Isikoff, Newsweek
In an effort to crack down on one of the world's most notorious
international criminals, President George W. Bush last summer signed an
order barring U.S. citizens from doing business with Russian arms
trafficker Victor Bout. But not long afterward, U.S. officials discovered
Bout's tentacles were wider than anticipated: for much of this year,
NEWSWEEK has learned, a Texas charter firm allegedly controlled by Bout was
making repeated flight s to Iraq—courtesy of a Pentagon contract allowing
it to refuel at U.S. military bases...

Irwin Arieff, Reuters
Pentagon auditors found numerous irregularities in a no-competition deal
given by U.S. authorities to Halliburton Co. and paid for with Iraqi oil
money, an international watchdog disclosed on Tuesday. Audits covering five
work orders worth $812 million made last year by Iraq 's U.S.-led
administration "highlight many shortcomings including noncompletion of the
required technical evaluations, unsupported costs and overstated costs,"

Empire of Barbarism
John Bellamy Foster and Brett Clark, Monthly Review
...Today the world is facing what de Silva feared—a barbarism emanating
from a single powerful country, the United States, which has adopted a
doctrine of preemptive (or preventative) war, and is threatening to
destabilize the entire globe (...) The continuing decline of U.S. economic
hegemony, occurring alongside deepening economic stagnation in capitalism
as a whole, has led the United States to turn increasingly to extraeconomic
means of ma intaining its position: putting its huge war machine in motion
in order to prop up its faltering hegemony over the world economy. The
"Global War on Terror" is a manifestation of this latest lethal phase of
U.S. imperialism, which began with the 1991 Gulf War made possible by the
breaking up of the Soviet bloc and the emergence of the United States as
the sole superpower...
