Fahrenheit 9/11...
Baghdad Burning, Girl Blog from Iraq...
...We have 9/11’s on a monthly basis. Each and every Iraqi person who dies
with a bullet, a missile, a grenade, under torture, accidentally- they all
have families and friends and people who care. The number of Iraqis dead
since March 2003 is by now at least eight times the number of people who
died in the World Trade Center. They had their last words, and their last
thoughts as their worlds came down around them, too. I’ve attended more
wakes and funerals this last year, than I! ’ve attended my whole life. The
process of mourning and the hollow words of comfort have become much too
familiar and automatic...

Desaparecidos & terrorismo di Stato. NOI ACCUSIAMO
quelli precedenti...

Iraq's universities face catastrophe
Amer Ouali
Iraqi universities, once among the most prestigious in the Arab world, are
facing potential catastrophe, with rampant kidnappings and murders causing
the post-Saddam Hussein intelligentsia to flee abroad en masse. "Deans tell
me their worries. I fear they will resign and that will lead us into a
catastrophe," Higher Education Minister Taher Khalis al-Bakaa confessed to
a news conference this week...

Can America Win in Iraq?
Patrick Seale, Al-Hayat
...Israel's interest in the war - its strategic aim -- was to destroy and
permanently enfeeble Iraq, so as to eliminate any future potential threat
from the east. This aim was achieved in the two wars of 1991 and 2003. Iraq
as a strong, unitary Arab state no longer exists. It has effectively been
dismembered. The best that can be hoped for under present circumstances is
that it will eventually re-emerge as a loose federation...

Iraqi Insurgents Growing Stronger - and Wiser
"PA"
The scale and sophistication of militant attacks in Iraq are steadily
increasing, with co-ordinated strikes and complicated ambushes that
increasingly hit their targets, officials and analysts say. The attacks –
more than 200 dead in four days – has stifled American hopes that the
transfer of sovereignty and the prospect of a democratic vote in four
months could take the steam out of the uprising. Instead, there are signs
the Americans and their Iraqi allies are facing an enemy more det! ermined
than ever...

The Opening Moves to a Greater, Expanded Israel?
Xymphora
Why is Israel so interested in building an oil pipeline from Kirkuk to
Haifa? The whole idea sounds preposterous, given the likely reaction from
the whole Arab world. The not unreasonable perception would be that the
attack on Iraq was just to let Israelis steal Iraqi oil. But the idea just
won't go away (...) Israel dosn't want either the pipeline or the oil it
would carry. Israel wants to build a pipeline that it knows will be
attacked as it is being built. The attacks will thu! s require the presence
of Israeli troops to protect the contractors building the pipeline. The
Israeli troops will require a system of roads to move along the pipeline
and to communicate with Israel...

dipendenti di società di sicurezza.

Far graver than Vietnam
Sidney Blumenthal, The Guardian
..."We have a growing, maturing insurgency group," he told me. "We see
larger and more coordinated military attacks. They are getting better and
they can self-regenerate. The idea there are x number of insurgents, and
that when they're all dead we can get out is wrong. The insurgency has
shown an ability to regenerate itself because there are people willing to
fill the ranks of those who are killed. The political culture is more
hostile to the US presence. The longer we stay, the m! ore they are
confirmed in that view"...

UK officers linked to torture jail
Richard Norton-Taylor, The Guardian
The Ministry of Defence has admitted for the first time that senior British
officers were working closely with American commanders at Abu Ghraib, the
Baghdad prison where Iraqi prisoners were systematically abused and
humiliated. Two intelligence officers, Colonel Chris Terrington and Colonel
Campbell James, were "embedded within" the US unit responsible for
extracting information from Iraqi prisoners, the armed forces minister,
Adam Ingram, disclosed...

John Negroponte darà presto vita agli squadroni della morte iracheni.
Intervista a Michel Chossoudovsky di Ingo Niebel
Nuovi Mondi Media
all'assassinio di numerosi civili. Fu coinvolto anche nell'organizzazione
dei contras che in Nicaragua dichiararono guerra al governo sandinista...

Judge orders U.S. to turn over prisoner records. Jurist cites government
for moving at ‘glacial pace’
The Associated Press
Suggesting the government was acting as if it had something to hide, a
federal judge Wednesday gave Washington one month to release records
related to the treatment of prisoners in Iraq. U.S. District Judge Alvin
Hellerstein chastised officials for moving at a “glacial pace” in
responding to nearly year-old Freedom of Information Act requests from the
American Civil Liberties Union and four other watchdog organizati! ons...

''Iraq is full of WMD''
Paul Harris, YellowTimes.org Columnist (Canada)
The United States went to war against Iraq in 2003 on the basis that Iraq
was chock-a-block with ‘weapons of mass destruction’ (WMD). Eventually, the
Americans had to admit they were wrong and they just couldn’t find those
weapons. Many skeptics suspect the Bush administration lied about the WMDs
in Iraq to cover a desire to invade and steal Iraqi oil. Few understand
that the United States is still lying. Iraq is full of WMDs, both used and
unused, but the Bushoviks! and their sycophantic media fail to alert the
public because it is the Americans who are using them...

Who seized Simona Torretta? This Iraqi kidnapping has the mark of an
undercover police operation
Naomi Klein and Jeremy Scahill, The Guardian
...Nothing about this kidnapping fits the pattern of other abductions. Most
are opportunistic attacks on treacherous stretches of road. Torretta and
her colleagues were coldly hunted down in their home. And while mujahideen
in Iraq scrupulously hide their identities, making sure to wrap their faces
in scarves, these kidnappers were bare-faced and clean-shaven, some in
business suits. One assailant! was addressed by the others as "sir" (...)
What we do know is this: if this hostage-taking ends in bloodshed,
Washington, Rome and their Iraqi surrogates will be quick to use the
tragedy to justify the brutal occupation - an occupation that Simona
Torretta, Simona Pari, Raad Ali Abdul Azziz and Mahnouz Bassam risked their
lives to oppose...

U.S. Intelligence Shows Pessimism on Iraq's Future
DOUGLAS JEHL, NYTimes
A classified National Intelligence Estimate prepared for President Bush in
late July spells out a dark assessment of prospects for Iraq, government
officials said Wednesday. The estimate outlines three possibilities for
Iraq through the end of 2005, with the worst case being developments that
could lead to civil war, the officials said. The most favorable outcome
described is an Iraq whose stability would remain tenuous in political,
economic and security terms. "T! here's a significant amount of pessimism,"
said one government official who has read the document, which runs about 50
pages...

Innocents are paying the price in Iraq
Linda S. Heard, Online Journal Contributing Writer
...While so much is made of the 1,000 US military fatalities, an eerie
silence surrounds the tally of Iraqi casualties since the invasion. As
candles were lit around the world and a minute's silences were held for the
September 11, 2001, victims on Sunday, the deaths of Afghan and Iraqi
civilians went unnoticed. When this inequality is publicly remarked upon,
US politicians either sidestep the question or glibly parrot prepared
answers. When a call! er to CNN's Larry King 9-11 special asked the former
New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani whether he thought the deaths of 15,000 Iraqi
civilians should be commemorated, he answered with a question: "Would you
prefer to see Saddam Hussain still in power?"...

New US Abuse Scandal In Northern Iraq: Report
IslamOnline.net
American soldiers have routinely abused detainees in northern Iraq , in
what seems to be a new widespread and systematic abuse similar to that in
the notorious Abu Ghraib prison, a leading British daily said. The Guardian
Tuesday, September 14 , carried testimonies of a number of detainees who
complained about having been sexually and physically abused while detained
by the American forces in Mosul..

Iraq's insurgency appears to take the upper hand
Steven Komarow, Cesar Soriano and Tom Squitieri, USA TODAY
... "The bottom line is, at this moment we are losing the war," says Andrew
Bacevich, a former Army colonel who teaches international relations at
Boston University. "That doesn't mean it is lost, but we are losing, and as
an observer it is difficult for me to see that either the civilian
leadership or the military leadership has any plausible idea on how to turn
this around"...

Baghdad Bloodbath. US Gives Conflicting Accounts of Rocket Attack
PATRICK COCKBURN, Countepunch
...The US account of the incident in which Mazen al-Tomeizi, a Palestinian
television producer working for al-Arabiya satellite channel was killed,
was contradicted by the film taken by his cameraman at the moment the
rocket struck. There is no sound of firing from the crowd in the moments
before the helicopters attacked. The US military's accounts of incidents in
which it claims to have targeted insurgents but only civilians have died
are fr! equently discredited by Arab television pictures of the incident
which US officers apparently do not watch before issuing statements...
