Retired generals compare Iraq fight to Vietnam War
AFP
America's increasingly drawn-out campaign in Iraq is the reason the Vietnam
War remains such a contentious issue in the US presidential election race,
retired Vietnamese generals say. The elderly officers said they were not
surprised the war, which left more than 58,000 Americans dead, had become a
key battleground between President George W. Bush and his Democratic
challenger, Senator John Kerry. "Americans, rich and powerful, have still
not come to terms with their defeat at the h! ands of smaller, poorer
people," said General Hoang Minh Thao, a respected historian of the
Vietnamese army...

Warnings about prisoner abuse in Cuba and Iraq ignored, book says
John H. Cushman Jr., The New York Times
Senior military and national security officials in the Bush administration
were repeatedly warned by subordinates in 2002 and 2003 that prisoners in
military custody were being abused, according to a new book by a prominent
journalist. Seymour Hersh, a writer for The New Yorker magazine who earlier
this year was among the first to disclose details of the abuses of
prisoners at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, makes the charges in his book "Chain! of
Command: The Road From 9/11 to Abu Ghraib" (HarperCollins), which is being
released tomorrow...

MoD faces more than 40 cases of abuse and killings in Iraq
Severin Carrell, Independent
British lawyers are now taking court action over more than 40 cases of
alleged abuses and killings by British troops in Iraq - including fresh
claims that unarmed civilians were murdered, tortured or recklessly shot.
The new claims have been added to the dossier of ill-treatment and murder
allegations at the centre of a High Court case against Geoff Hoon, the
Secretary of State for Defence, alleging that British forces in Iraq
repeatedly broke human! rights laws by ill-treating and killing civilians...

US fires missiles at Baghdad crowd
Aljazeera.net
Up to 10 Iraqis have been killed and 35 others injured after US helicopters
fired missiles at a crowd in a central Baghdad street. The attack, which
also killed a Palestinian journalist, follows fierce clashes which began
when US military vehicles, firing stun grenades, entered Haifa street in
the centre of the capital at about 2am (1100 GMT) on Sunday, an Iraqi
journalist told Aljazeera. A US armoured vehicle was set ablaze and as a
group of Iraqi men gathered around the burning vehicle,! US helicopters
swooped in and fired machine guns and missiles at the crowd, killing up to
10 Iraqis and injuring 35 others...

Hundreds Of Residents Leave Tall Afar
Mujahid Mohammed
Hundreds of Iraqis fled the trouble spot of Tall Afar, as regional
heavyweights initiated contacts with the government Saturday in a bid to
end a US-led operation that has killed at least 50 people. Clutching bare
essentials, families were driven out of the northern town, which was sealed
off by US troops for the third consecutive day, in national guard pick-up
trucks, said an AFP correspondent...

paese, guidata dagli USA, è cominciata, quasi 18 mesi fa.

'Holy Warriors' in Samarra Reject Accord With Americans
DEXTER FILKINS
A group claiming to speak for insurgents in the contested city of Samarra
said Friday that it had rejected an agreement that allowed American forces
and the Iraqi government to re-enter the city, and the group pledged to
continue fighting. In the statement, the group also claimed to be joining
forces with a similar organization in Falluja, raising the prospect of a
troubling new cooperation among Sunni insurgents...

Naomi Klein, Nuovi Mondi Media
richiesto nessun pensiero autonomo.

Muslim clerics call US-led strikes 'genocide'
AFP
...As US-led operations to rid Tall Afar of "terrorists" continued, Sheikh
Abdel Ghaffur al-Samarrai told worshippers the assault on the small mainly
Shiite Turkmen northern town qualified as genocide. "What have the
residents of Fallujah and Tall Afar done to deserve these atrocities? The
occupation forces are committing genocide," he said. "They came to Iraq to
kill, destroy and strip its resources. Where is the UN Security Council?"
the leading cleric asked...

Organizer of Saddam's trial in court for homicide case
Nancy A. Youssef and Patrick Kerkstra, Knight Ridder
Salem Chalabi, the man once in charge of organizing the trial of Saddam
Hussein, was in court himself Saturday, facing 2-month-old allegations that
he was involved in the slaying of the director-general of Iraq's Finance
Ministry. Reporters were barred from viewing Chalabi's appearance. An hour
after he met with the judge, he was released on bond after authorities
concluded he did not pull the trigger in the death. The chief inves!
tigative judge, Zuhair al-Maliky, said Chalabi is still under investigation
on suspicion he paid to have Haithem Fadhil murdered...

If Terrorism Isn't Video-taped, It Doesn't Exist. Fallujah: an Iraqi Beslan
MIKE WHITNEY
Fallujah is an Iraqi Beslan. The only difference is that the cameras aren't
rolling. The city of 500,000 is being held hostage by an American
leadership who doesn't mind shedding the blood of innocent civilians to
achieve their broader political goals. That is the very definition of
terrorism. Since, the Marines were rebuffed last April in a three week
siege that killed an estimated 650 Iraqis, the military has repeatedly
bombed sections of Falluja ! using the spurious claim of targeting
terrorist "safe houses." Every incident involved the wanton destruction of
personal property and the loss of innocent life...

1,000 Iraqi rebels, civilians dead in urban warfare, Najaf leader says
EVAN OSNOS AND RICK JERVIS, Chicago Tribune
Three weeks of urban warfare killed at least 1,000 Iraqi rebels and
civilians, the governor of this battle-weary city said Saturday in his
first estimate of the death toll since the standoff ended two weeks ago.
During last month's relentless close-quarters combat between U.S. troops
and militants loyal to rebel cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, hospital officials and
military officers had estimated the death toll in this southern ho! ly city
had climbed far into the hundreds, though most conceded any estimates could
not be verified until fighting eased. Now, two weeks after the violent
standoff, Najaf Gov. Adnan Zurfi said Saturday that he put the death toll
for insurgents and civilans "at over 1000 killed," based on hospital data
and other measures he did not name...

WHY GEORGE W. BUSH IS THE WORLD'S LEADING TERRORIST!
Analysis by TvNewsLIES.org
...So, what part of the FBI definition of "terrorism" do the voters of the
United States not understand? And what acts of terrorism as defined by the
FBI do the voters of the United States not recognize? Is there any doubt at
all that the Bush administration committed acts of terrorism when it
unlawfully used force and violence against the nation of Iraq to intimidate
and coerce its government and the civilian population, in furtherance of
the Bush/PNAC pol! itical and social objectives. Therefore, by any
definition, if George W. Bush is guilty of terrorism, he can accurately be
identified as a TERRORIST. And if he is truly a terrorist, it is only
fitting that George W. Bush be scrutinized in terms of his success in that
capacity. What is his standing among the other murderous terrorist activity
in the world today? Is it possible that George W. Bush actually has claim
to being the very BEST at something during his reign in office? Let's look
at the figures...

The Invasion of Iraq is an expansion of that of Palestine
Ibrahim Ebeid, Al-Moharer

Arab Unity checked because Arab Unity meant Arab liberation and the erasing
of any artificial entity...

US military launches bloody attacks on rebel strongholds in Iraq
Peter Symonds, WSWS
In little-publicised moves, the American military has launched a broad
series of attacks in Iraq to try and forcibly subdue many of the major
centres of armed resistance to the US-led occupation. Scores of people,
many of them innocent men, women and children, have been killed in
airstrikes, tank and artillery barrages and aggressive patrols aimed at
intimidating and terrorising the population as a whole. Fallujah, a symbol
of anti-US opposition through! out the country, has been subjected to four
successive days of aerial bombardment this week...

Islamic fighters tighten control of rebel city

Falluja Brigade, a government force established in May to maintain
security, was disbanded this week. Large areas of Falluja are now entirely
under the control of the insurgents, while other parts are patrolled by
police units that sympathise with the militants...

Three Years After 9/11: More than 40% of Americans Still Think Saddam Did
It. Media failure or willful public indifference to the truth?
Greg Mitchell
The latest Newsweek poll, released this week, revealed that 42% of
Americans continue to believe that Saddam Hussein's regime was "directly
involved" in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, despite all
the evidence to the contrary. That's nearly as many as the 44% who
disagree. It seems to matter little that every official federal probe, most
recently the much-lauded 9/11 Comm! ission, has debunked this myth, in
high-profile reports...

Three Years Later: Peaceful Tomorrows 9/11/04 Statement
September Eleventh Families For Peaceful Tomorrows
Nearly three years ago, September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows was
born out of a shared belief that America's military response to the 9/11
attacks which took our loved ones' lives would result in the deaths of
countless innocent civilians and increase recruitment for terrorist causes,
making the United States, and the world, less safe and less free for
generations to come. Today, as we commemorate September 11, 2004, we fi! nd
that our worst fears have been realized (...) Our illegal, immoral and
unjustified invasion of Iraq, a nation that had nothing to do with the
September 11th attacks, has cost the lives of 1,000 American troops and an
estimated 12,000 Iraqi civilians...

Frustrated U.S. disbands the Fallujah Brigade
Alissa J. Rubin Times Staff Writer
The Iraqi military force formed by the Marines in a last-ditch effort to
pacify the restive city of Fallouja has been disbanded in the face of
continuing violence, assaults on government security forces and evidence
that some members have been working openly with insurgents. The dissolution
of the Fallouja Brigade, created during the spring to avoid an all-out
assault on the insurgent hotbed, marked a significant setback for the U.S.
military...

dalle inchieste finora condotte.
