Reuters
A top aide to Iraq's rebel Shi'ite leader Moqtada al-Sadr called on the
Mehdi Army militia Monday to cease fire across Iraq and said Sadr was
preparing to announce plans for a major political program. "Due to the
situation in Najaf and the provinces ... we call on all members of the
Mehdi Army to cease fire unless in self-defense, and to be patient until
the political program which Sadr's followers are planning is revealed,"
Sheik Ali Smeisim told Lebanon's al-Manar television...

Allawi 'Plays Terror Card', Security Talks Stumble
IslamOnline.net
As what the Iraqi interim government calls "security talks" stumbled
Monday, August 30, over the thorny issue of weapons' handover, Prime
Minister Iyad Allawi b! luntly played the card of the US-led "war on
terror" (...) Meanwhile, US-picked Allawi used the kidnapping of two French
journalists, instantly denounced by Muslims from Baghdad to Paris, to
reiterate Washington's message of "the need to fight global terrorism".
Allawi said in an interview published in the Italian capital Rome Monday
that the kidnap shows that no country can remain neutral in Iraq and
choosing not to send troops to aid Baghdad is no guarantee against
terrorism...

'We Were Supposed to Humiliate Them'. Interview with US Staff Sergeant Ivan
Frederick on torture at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison
CAROLIN EMCKE, Der Spiegel
...SPIEGEL: You could have invoked the Geneva Conventions.
Frederick: I didn't know anything about the Geneva Conventions. No one told
me about them when I was in training. I just recently tried to find out
about the Conventions on the internet. In addition, the intelligence people
were constantly praising us. They would just say: "Keep up the good work"...

PeopleJudgeBush.org
More than 500 people assembled in New York’s Martin Luther King, Jr.
Auditorium concluded the War Crimes Tribunal with a resounding unanim! ous
vote of guilty, declaring the Bush administration guilty of war crimes,
crimes against humanity, and crimes against peace. Declaring the Bush
administration a criminal regime, this meeting, which drew speakers and
participants from around the world, defended the right of GIs to resist
illegal orders to fight against the people of Iraq, expressed solidarity
with the Iraqi resistance and declared itself in solidarity with the
upcoming Week of Resistance in New York City against the Republican
National Convention...

Dyke: Bully Blair duped us all over Iraq
SIMON WALTERS, Mail on Sunday
Tony Blair faced a new crisis over Iraq last night after he was rocked by
sensational allegations against him by his former friend and ally, ex-BBC
Director! -General Greg Dyke. In his bombshell memoirs, serialised in The
Mail on Sunday today, Dyke lifts the lid on the bitter row between the BBC
and No 10 over claims the Government 'sexed up' intelligence on Saddam's
weapons. Dyke describes a letter he received from Tony Blair the day the
Iraq war started as a blatant attempt to 'bully' the BBC into gagging
anti-war critics...

From Vietnam to Iraq: Pretext and precedent
William B. Bader IHT
The first 10 days of the politically charged August of 1964 present a
timely reminder of what can happen when a president shrouds the road to war
in a fog of dece! ption in the belief that it is necessary to do so for the
people's own good. On the basis of what President Lyndon Johnson said had
happened in the Gulf of Tonkin, Congress unblinkingly provided the
authority to "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against
the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression." These
words translated into a war in which three million Vietnamese and 58,000
Americans died, a war that Johnson never expected to win...

The Axis of Treason. Israeli spies in the Pentagon
Justin Raimondo, Antiwar.com
...However, unconditional support to Israel has always been a central tenet
of neoconservative foreign policy doctrine, and never more so than toda! y.
Feith was a co-author, along with several prominent neocons, of A Clean
Break," a 1996 policy paper written for then Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu that proposed the elimination of Saddam Hussein as a
primary goal: Baghdad was depicted as the gateway to Damascus, a byway on
the road to Tehran. The strategic utility of invading Iraq as a means to
combat "terrorism" as represented by al-Qaeda has always baffled war
opponents, and even a few reluctant supporters, because it was so
strikingly counterintuitive...

Standoff bolstered Sadr's support
Scott Baldauf | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
Six months ago, Sheikh Jawad al-Khalasi was what most would consider an
Iraqi Shiite moderate. Critical of the militant ideas of fe! llow Shiite
cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, Mr. Khalasi preached a more cooperative approach
toward the Americans and the interim Iraqi government. Then, last Thursday,
when Iraqi snipers opened fire on him and thousands of demonstrators
converging on Najaf, hoping to end the siege there and protect the shrine,
Khalasi changed his mind. Now he's a radical, a troubling sign that Mr.
Sadr has grown stronger from a three-week-long standoff that the Iraqi
government once hoped might reduce Sadr to irrelevance...

I primi
misteri?...

The Cradle of Devastation
Manuel Valenzuela, AxisofLogic.com
...Iraq has become a phantom that is not seen, lingering in our midst yet
invisible to the conscious. The intensity of guerilla war and the
devastating attacks by Ir! aqi freedom fighters and the resistance
routinely go unnoticed, instead only making a ten second sound bite
proclaiming the death of dozens of dead-enders, thugs, Baathist remnants
and foreign fighters. It seems the reality of who it is American troops are
fighting cannot be blurted out since it was our forefathers who waged the
same kind of war for Independence more than 225 years ago. We would not
want to call the Founding Fathers and their army of patriots ‘terrorists,’
would we? ...

"Saddam Hussein, the Fighter, the Thinker and the Man" - Part One
Amer Islander, Al-Moharer
...His birth in 1937 was not a joyful occasion, and no roses or aromatic
plants bedecked his cradle. He was born an orphan, his father ! having died
before he was born, and a poor boy of peasant stock. Like the great
majority of true leaders in history, he was obliged, from the moment he
first became aware of himself, to face the challenges of life and to
fashion his own existence. It was in the spring, on the twenty-second of
April 1937, that Mrs. Sabhah Talfah al-Musallat gave birth to her son in
the house of her brother al-Haj Khairallah Talfah and it was his paternal
uncle, Hassan al-Majid; who gave him the name of Saddam...
