Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan <pakistan at undp.org> Dear Mr. President, As we commemorate the death of the first victims of nuclear bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki 57 years ago, let us make sure that nuclear weapons will never be used again. Nuclear weapons have changed the nature of war. The main victims are innocent civilians, and there are now enough nuclear weapons in the world to end human life itself. We must not cling to past ways of thinking and acting, or we risk human extinction. The bisons that roamed the prairies of North America became nearly extinct, because they did not adjust their behavior to changed conditions. In the past, when the main danger they faced were predators such as bears, the best protection they had against danger was for them to form a circle, with the strong bulls on the outside and the females and young protected inside. But when hunters with guns arrived, forming a circle was the worst thing they could do. Instead of dispersing and running away, they presented a fixed, easy target and were massacred in large numbers. Similarly, in the past, seeking military superiority may have made us safe, but today it could lead to mutual destruction. We must realize that with nuclear weapons we cannot continue to fight wars as in the past, because some day the loser will have nuclear weapons and not hesitate to use them. As long as we develop new nuclear weapons and explore new uses for such weapons, we set a bad example for other countries that will want to imitate us. Double-standards do not work. If we wish to survive, we must do everything in your power to help abolish nuclear weapons, with strict and universal international verification. Sincerely, [Your name, post address & country] ****************************************************************** OTHER ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE: 1) Write also to your national and local representatives. 2) Write by hand (a list of mailing addresses is attached below). 3) Reformulate as a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. 4) Send us the names and email addresses of others who you believe may participate in this monthly campaign. 5) Inform us of what you have done, and make other suggestions. ****************************************************************** Addresses of the heads of other nuclear weapons states: President Vladimir Putin Office of the Government Krasnopresenskaya 2 Moscow, RUSSIA tel +7-095-925-3581, fax +7-095-205-4219 email rusun at undp.org Prime Minister Tony Blair Prime Minister's Office 10 Downing Street London, SW 1A 2 AA, BRITAIN tel +44-171-270-3000 fax +44(207)925-0918 website www.number-10.gov.uk President Jacques Chirac Office du President, Palais De L'Elysee 55-57 rue du Faubourg St. Honore 75008 Paris, FRANCE tel +33-1-4292-8100, Fax +33-1-4742-2465 email fraun at undp.org President Jiang Zemin Office of the Premier 225 Chaoyangmennei Dajie, Dongsi Beijing, P.
