FRIENDS, PLEASE SEND A SOLIDARITY MESSAGE!!!! A message received from the Dutch Anti-War Movement in Leiden, and freely translated by Marya Nyland: October 19,01 ATTACKS ON AFGHANISTAN: POLITICIANS IN THE US ARE RECEIVING DEATH THREATS BECAUSE OF A RESOLUTION AGAINST THE WAR Members of the City Coucil of Berkeley, California are receiving death threats, after they passed a resolution earlier this week against the bombing of Afghanistan. They are also talking about beginning an economic boycott by businesses and organizations. According to Mayor Shirley Dean, Berkeley is the only American city that has spoken against the war. Since then members of the Council have received hate letters and thousands of e-mails and telephone calls. Conferences that were booked to be held in Berkeley have been cancelled because of the resolution of the Council. Berkeley, California has a long peace tradition. It was the centre of protests against the Vietnam war and the Gulf War. The e-mail address of Council member Donna Spring, who's resolution against the Afghanistan bombing was accepted in Berkeley, is: <spring at ci.berkeley.ca.us>. SHE CERTAINLY CAN USE A SOLIDARITY MESSAGE, after having received threats of death, rape and other right-wing language by Bush-supporters and other "patriots".
