I: News from NY UN NGO's

modo a quella paragonabile

Oggetto: News from NY UN NGO's

Marian Franz and I are okay - we went in on the train yesterday to NYC to
the UN NGO conference yesterday and were turned back at Pelham because of
the disaster at the World Trade Center in NYC. We are now at my home,
awaiting news to know the best way for her to return to Washington.

Kathy Packard, my son Wells' wife had her office on the 47th floor of the
World Trade Center.
She was late leaving for work because of voting in the primary and so when
she came up out of the subway she was told to walk North. She walked uptown
to Wells' office at 23rd St. They just missed each other but both walked
home to Brooklyn across the Manhattan Bridge. She has just heard that her
closest work colleagues were alive. They are praying for those they know
who are still at risk.

As I heard, I wept with relief for my family and now I weep for those not
so fortunate.
A relief center has been set up here in my hometown of Greenwich for
children who do not know where their families are. Luckily I am told most
were picked up by friends. In one Greenwich school half the families list
the World Trade Center as their business address. - Many in our town - an
hour from Manhattan are commuters.

The war spirit and the peace spirit here in the US are being weighed in the
balance. Our work continues its importance. It is deeply disturbing to hear
George Bush threaten those who harbor suspects as equally suspect and to
hear the cheers in countries where the US is clearly an enemy - albeit with
reason. Certainly it a time the United States is learning it can no longer
arrogantly claim invulnerbility to acts of war.
