One more CO imprisoned

Dear Friends,

Ido Harari, a 26-year-old student from Tel-Aviv, will today begin to serve a
prison term of 14 days in Military Prison No. 4 in Tzrifin, due to his
conscientious objection to reserves service in the Israel Defence Forces.
Before his imprisonment, Ido prepared a short statement: ìAs a citizen, it
is my duty not to serve in an army engaged in the oppression of civilian
population. An army in general, and the Israel Defence Forces in particular,
is a violent organization which does not bring about the resolution of
conflicts, but rather their escalation".

Ido Harari thus joins conscientious objector Gabriel Wolff, now spending his
second consecutive imprisonment term in Military Prison No. 6 in Atlit.

Ido Harari was given a 14-day sentence yesterday, as he refused to perform
his duties as reserves soldier. However, he will only begin to serve his
sentence today, because in all the military prisons and detention facilities
in Israel there was not a single place left vacant. This amazing fact is
very important: well over 90% of all prisoners held in Israel's military
prisons are people wishing to avoid military service (not necessarily for
political or conscientious reasons).


RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Please send appeals by fax, mail, e-mail, etc. protesting CO Ido Harari's
imprisonment and calling for his immediate and unconditional release, to the
addresses below. As usual, letters and faxes to the prison authorities are
especially effective. You can also send letters and postcards to Ido
himself.
