SAN FRANCISCO: manifestazione per la pace davanti al consolato italiano

Cari amici / Dear friends,

On Sunday morning, February 16, a group of Italian citizens living in the
Bay Area will gather in front of the Italian consulate in San Francisco to
express their opposition to the Italian government's support of a U.S.-led
war in Iraq.

We will be accompanied by American friends interested in Italian society
and politics, who share our strong disagreement with the Berlusconi
government's pro-war position.

The event will take place at 10 a.m. at 2590 Webster Street, the building
which serves both as the consulate and the consular residence. The consul
general has been informed about the demonstration, and will report on it to
the home office in Rome.

We are planning this action to make it clear that Italy's "official"
endorsement of the war goes against majority public opinion in Italy.
According to recent polls, the vast majority of Italians are strongly
opposed. Last December an estimated 450,000 people participated in a mass
antiwar march and rally in Florence. Similar protests have taken place, and
more will be held in Italy's major cities on February 15.

We want to let people in the Bay Area and elsewhere in the U.S. know that,
just as George W. Bush does not represent the majority opinion or the best
interests of citizens here in the U.S., Berlusconi does not speak for us.
We are joining with millions of our compatriots who say "NO" to President
Bush and to the warmakers in Washington.

After our peaceful, nonviolent gathering, many of us will join the mass
march and rally scheduled to start off from Justin Herman Plaza at 11 a.m.

Si comunica che nell'ambito delle iniziative di mobilitazione internazionale contro la guerra che si terranno nei giorni 15-16 Febbraio 2003, un comitato di Italiani residenti nella circoscrizione consolare di San Francisco ha organizzato una manifestazione pacifica e non violenta di protesta contro il governo Berlusconi ed il suo appoggio alla campagna bellica statunitense contro l'Irak.
Tale manifestazione inizierà alle ore 10:00 del 16 Febbraio 2003, presso la sede del Consolato Generale d'Italia al 2590 di Webster Street a San Francisco. Alla fine della manifestazione i partecipanti si uniranno alla marcia per la pace che si snoderà per le vie della città e al rally che si terrà al Civic Center di San Francisco. 

Vorremmo che in tale giorno, il Signor Console Generale d'Italia
o un suo delegato ricevesse personalmente una nostra delegazione e che trasmettesse al Governo e al Parlamento italiani il seguente comunicato:
Noi italiani residenti all'estero nella circoscrizione consolare di San Francisco ci uniamo a tutti coloro i quali oppongono la guerra contro l'Irak.
In particolare ci uniamo all'organizzazione umanitaria italiana Emergency nel gridare FUORI L'ITALIA DALLA GUERRA e nel ribadire che : 

"Vogliamo un mondo basato sulla giustizia e sulla solidarietà.
Ripudiamo la violenza, il terrorismo e la guerra come strumenti per risolvere le contese tra gli uomini, i popoli e gli stati.
Chiediamo che l'Italia, di fronte alla minaccia di un attacco militare contro l'Iraq, non partecipi ad alcun atto di guerra, nel rispetto della Costituzione.
Non vogliamo essere corresponsabili di nuovi lutti, né vogliamo alimentare la spirale del terrore. 

Basta guerre, basta morti, basta vittime."
