Mentre la crisi climatica peggiora a una velocità superiore a quanto finora previsto, alla conferenza sul clima in Polonia sono state stabilite alcune regole che difficilmente riusciranno a mettere in pratica entro il 2020 quanto deciso agli accordi di Parigi del 2015, comunque insufficienti rispetto all’intensità dei cambiamenti. In una lettera aperta diffusa in tutto il mondo (tra i firmatari Vandana Shiva, Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein), per invitare a una mobilitazione straordinaria, tra l’altro, si legge: “Ciascuno di noi, specie coloro che vivono nel mondo materialmente privilegiato, deve impegnarsi ad accettare la necessità di vivere in modo più leggero, di consumare molto di meno, e, non solo di difendere i diritti umani ma anche di assumerci le nostre responsabilità come custodi del pianeta…”

Questa lettera aperta appare (il 10 dicembre 2018) sui principali giornali del mondo.

Nel nostro ecosistema globale, complesso e interdipendente, la vita sta scomparendo. L’estinzione delle specie  accelera. La crisi climatica sta peggiorando ad una velocità superiore a quanto finora previsto. Ogni giorno duecento specie si avviano all’estinzione. Una situazione così disperata non può continuare. I leader politici di tutto il mondo non riescono ad affrontare la crisi ambientale. Se il capitalismo delle multinazionali  continuerà a guidare l’economia internazionale la catastrofe globale sarà inevitabile.

Indifferenza e immobilismo negli Stati Uniti, in Inghilterra in Australia, in Brasile, ma anche in Africa e Asia, testimoniano forme diverse di paralisi politica, gli Stati gettano la spugna di fronte alla drammatica responsabilità che sorge dalla necessità di una gestione planetaria della crisi ambientale.

Le organizzazioni politiche internazionali e i governi degli Stati devono affrontare i problemi dell’emergenza climatica immediatamente, definendo con urgenza delle politiche organiche volte ad affrontarla. Le nazioni privilegiate devono, senza invocare costrizioni finanziare, sostenere politiche complessive per l’ambiente e la sicurezza nei paesi impoveriti, in modo da compensare questi ultimi per la crescita economica insostenibile perseguita in questi anni, oltre che per ripagare i danni causati dall’imperialismo e dal conseguente saccheggio del pianeta.

Poiché gli eventi climatici estremi già colpiscono la produzione agricola, noi chiediamo ai governi di agire immediatamente per evitare ogni rischio di fame, attraverso investimenti immediati in produzioni alimentari agroecologiche resistenti agli eventi climatici estremi. Chiediamo anche urgentemente un vertice per salvare l’Artico dallo scioglimento dei ghiacci e per rallentare i danni climatici ai nostri raccolti.

Inoltre chiediamo a tutti i cittadini responsabili a livello globale di mobilitarsi, organizzandosi in ogni luogo contro l’attuale apatia in ogni ambito in cui ciò sia possibile, come ad esempio il sostegno ai diritti dei popoli indigeni, la decolonizzazione e la lotta per la giustizia riparatrice, unendosi ad esempio al movimento globale che si sta attualmente ribellando contro l’estinzione (es. “Extinction Rebellion” nel Regno Unito).

Dobbiamo fare quindi insieme tutto ciò che è  possibile, in modo nonviolento, per  persuadere i politici e i dirigenti delle imprese ad abbandonare la loro trascurataggine e il loro negazionismo. Il “tirare avanti come al solito” non rappresenta più una scelta possibile. I cittadini globali non sopporteranno più questo tradimento dei nostri doveri planetari.

Ciascuno di noi, specie coloro che vivono nel mondo materialmente privilegiato, deve impegnarsi ad accettare la necessità di vivere in modo più leggero, di consumare molto di meno, e, non solo di difendere i diritti umani ma anche di assumerci le nostre responsabilità come custodi del pianeta.
