Twenty-six scientists will collect data to help them better understand mine detection. This collaborative trial will significantly advance the ongoing work of DREA and SACLANTCEN in mine hunting and seabed acoustics. "The data from these tests will provide what is needed to develop the heart of future Canadian Navy mine hunting systems," says Deputy Director General at DREA, Warren Nethercote. The sea trials are the result of the deployment of the NATO research vessel NRV Alliance to the East Coast of North America this summer. Alliance operates out of La Spezia, Italy, and usually spends most of her time in the Mediterranean or the Western Atlantic. Alliance last visited the eastern seaboard, and collaborated with DREA in 1992. SACLANTCEN scientists aboard Alliance will be cooperating with DREA scientists aboard the Department of National Defence's research vessel, CFAV Quest. Cosa e' SACLANT <http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/dod/jfcom.htm> http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/dod/jfcom.htm SACLANT's staff, including external branches, consists of 574 members (405 military and 87 civilian) from 17 of the 19 NATO nations, including France who has a mission located near SACLANT Headquarters. Allied Command Atlantic has a permanently assigned multinational naval force called the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT), which consists of six to 10 ships from different NATO nations. The command is also responsible for the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, located in La Spezia, Italy, which conducts marine research for both major NATO military commands and operates the research vessel Alliance Si studia il perfezionamento della ricerca antimine. <http://www.drdc-rddc.gc.ca/business/international_e.asp>http://www.drdc-rddc.gc.ca/business/international_e.asp Joint Sea TrialsIn collaboration with NATO scientists aboard the Research Vessel Alliance, we conducted innovative experiments in mine hunting and seabed acoustics in Nova Scotia. High-frequency sonar systems were used to determine characteristics of the ocean bottom and to perform mine detection tests. The ultimate goal of the project is to allow tactical commanders to optimize the performance of active sonar systems by exploiting our knowledge of the undersea environment. Dr. Frantzis correlated the stranding with trials of LFAS from a NATO research vessel, "Alliance". According to the official NATO report on this stranding, these whales were exposed to 150-160 dB of LFAS. <http://enterprise.spawar.navy.mil/nepa/whales/pressrel.cfm> <http://enterprise.spawar.navy.mil/nepa/whales/pressrel.cfm>http://enterprise.spawar.navy.mil/nepa/whales/pressrel.cfmThe Bioacoustics panel met in mid-June 1998 to investigate circumstances surrounding the stranding of Cuvier's Beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) on the Greek Coast in Kyparissiakos Gulf in May of 1996. The NATO Research Vessel Alliance had been conducting sonar testing in Kyparissiakos Gulf at the time of the strandings. The following summary of findings regarding possible causes and panel recommendations are quoted from the panel report. <http://www.cetacean-nation.com/LFAS.html> <http://www.cetacean-nation.com/LFAS.html>http://www.cetacean-nation.com/LFAS.html Stop the Madness of LFAS-Fermare la pazzia del LFAS The US Navy and NATO forces are intent on deploying a proven deadly sonar system [LFAS] in 80% of the world's oceans. This technology would send a pulseblast of up to 250 decebels (1 billion times louder than a 747 at takeoff!) out into the ocean atmosphere that amplifies its speed up to 8 times. This fatal blast will completely inundate any cetaceans and other sea life whose sensitivity tosound is at least 10 times greater than ours. The centre correlated a mass stranding of Cuvier's beaked whales off Greece in 1996 with sonar tests conducted by the NATO vessel Alliance. anche la cnn riporta un articolo sulla pericolosita' degli esperimenti dell'alliance <http://www.cnn.com/EARTH/9804/16/whales.sonar/>http://www.cnn.com/EARTH/9804/16/whales.sonar/ After looking for possible causes of the stranding, Frantzis and colleagues discovered that the NATO Research Vessel Alliance had been conducting LFAS tests the day prior to the strandings.Noting that LFAS tests had previously been tentatively linked with Cuvier's strandings elsewhere, Frantzis concluded in the Nature article, "We know that LFAS was used in Kyparissiakos Gulf. We also know that no other LFAS tests or mass strandings have occurred in the Greek Ionian Sea since 1981. Taking the past 16.5-year period into account, the probability of a mass stranding occurring for other reasons, during the period of the LFAS tests is less than 0.07 percent. Although pure coincidence cannot be excluded, it seems improbable that the two events were independent." alcuni cetacei sono morti istantaneamente durante i test dell'Alliance <http://www.rense.com/ufo6/oceanauc.htm>http://www.rense.com/ufo6/oceanauc.htm Cetacei Spiaggiati dopo gli esperimenti dell'alliance <http://faculty.virginia.edu/setear/bkmks/nature/sonar>http://faculty.virginia.edu/setear/bkmks/nature/sonar In a 1998 Nature article, Alexandros Frantzis pointed out that 12 Cuvier's beaked whales beached themselves alive on a Mediterranean coast while NATO was testing LFAS there. He concluded the chance of that happening for any other reason was less than 0.07 percent. The U.S. Navy research vessel Alliance performed that test for NATO but at a higher frequency than the United States used, said the Navy's Johnson anche il time.com dedica un articolo alle balene del mistero. <http://www.time.com/time/magazine/1998/int/980727/planet_watch.planet_watc32.html>http://www.time.com/time/magazine/1998/int/980727/planet_watch.planet_watc32.html May of 1996? Alexander Frantzis, an oceanographer at the Natural Center of Marine Research in Athens, puzzled over the incident for more than a year before he hit upon what he believes to be the cause: during that period, the NATO research vessel Alliance conducted tests of Low Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS), a system that can track submarines by sending out underwater sound waves. Since marine mammals use their hearing to navigate the seas, Frantzis contends, bursts of noise from sonar systems could cause the animals to go astray and become stranded on the shore.
