UN unhappy with Saddam trial

The United Nations has turned down a request by the United States to
assist Iraqi judges and prosecutors trying outsted President Saddam
Hussein. The UN said the court rules fail to meet the minimum
standards of justice and that it opposes the power of the special
tribunal to impose the death penalty. The Bush Administration had
appealed to the UN War Crimes Tribunal to send some judges and
prosecutors to train members of the Iraqi tribunal. This was
rejected by the UN Security General Kofi Annan
