Ci sono 160 vite nelle nostre mani.
160 persone la cui esistenza dipende anche da noi.
Sono i condannati a morte dell'Illinois la cui sorte sarà decisa anche da
quello che faremo in Italia e in Emilia-Romagna.


Due anni fa, di fronte alla catastrofe della giustizia del suo Stato che ha
liberato 13 condannati a morte innocenti nello stesso periodo di tempo in
cui uccideva 12  presunti colpevoli, il Governatore dell'Illinois George
Ryan fermò le esecuzioni e nominò una commissione d'inchiesta.
Giorni fa la commissione ha pubblicato un ponderoso rapporto e ha fatto 85
proposte per riformare la pena di morte dell'Illinois ed evitare le vergogne
di questi ultimi 20 anni, anche se è ormai opinione comune che l'unica cosa
decente da fare è abolirla.
Non sappiamo se lo Stato di Abramo Lincoln troverà la forza per passare
dalla parte del mondo civilizzato o se tenterà di rendere più accettabile
quella disgustosa violazione dei diritti umani che è la pena capitale, ma
ora si pone una questione più urgente.
Il Governatore Ryan (che non si presenta alle elezioni di novembre) sta
valutando l'opportunità di commutare le sentenze dei 160 che sono stati
condannati sulla base della vecchia legge. Da settimane gli abolizionisti
americani premono su di lui perché conceda la grazia a tutti i condannati e
il nostro contributo potrebbe essere determinante.
Questa è una delle rarissime occasioni in cui una pressione dall'estero
potrebbe fare la differenza: spedite una cartolina illustrata a Ryan, oppure
scrivetegli una lettera ANCHE IN ITALIANO.

Dear Governor Ryan:

First of all, I want to thank you for your leadership regarding the death
penalty crisis in Illinois. Your courage in publicly recognizing that the
Illinois death penalty system was broken and imposing a moratorium on
executions has sparked a much-needed reexamination of the nation's death
penalty system.  Now, your Commission on Capital Punishment has issued its
report and called for 85 reforms that are necessary to bring more accuracy
and fairness to the Illinois death penalty system.  The Commission's reforms
have not been enacted into law by the Illinois General Assembly and it is
highly uncertain that the reforms would be applied retroactively to existing
death row cases.

There are over 160 men and women now under sentence of death in Illinois who
were convicted under the broken death penalty system which sent at least 13
innocent men to death row.  None of those currently on death row have had
the benefit of the reforms that the Commission has proposed.  Therefore, I
support the commutation of all existing Illinois death sentences to the
sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.   The public's
safety in no way would be compromised by this action.  And, urgently, no
possibly innocent person tried and convicted under Illinois' broken death
penalty system would be at risk of execution.  You rightly called the
execution of an innocent person by the state "the ultimate nightmare."  I
ask you to exercise leadership again and commute the death sentences of all
death row inmates in Illinois.

 La Repubblica Romana fu il primo stato sovrano a scrivere nella propria
costituzione l'abolizione totale della pena di morte, il 3 luglio 1849.
Il Comitato, ispirandosi alla tradizione libertaria ed abolizionista del
nostro Paese, si batte contro la pena di morte e per il rispetto dei diritti
umani indicati agli articoli  2 - 21 della Dichiarazione Universale.
The Roman Republic was the first state to write in its constitution  the
total abolition of the death penalty, on 3rd July 1849 .
This Committee  follows this tradition fighting against the death penalty
and for the human rights listed in the articles 2-21 of the Universal
Declaration of 10th December 1948.
