--> News Article by Reuters posted on February 10, 2002 at 17:52:02: EST (-5 GMT)> > Sudan court blocks stoning execution of woman >> KHARTOUM, Feb 10 (Reuters) - A Sudanese appeals court has overturned a sentence of death by> stoning for a> pregnant Christian woman accused of adultery, and has sent the case back to the lower court> for fresh sentencing, court > documents showed. >> The appeals court in Sudan's southern Darfur state, bordering the Central African Republic,> ruled late last month that the> lower court should give the defendant a "rebuke" sentence, not capital punishment, the> documents received by Reuters on > Sunday showed. -- > Sudanese Victims of Torture Group > > PRESS RELEASE: 18 February 2002 > > DINKA WOMAN WHIPPED IN NYALA >> SVTG has received new information on Abok Alfa Akok, the Dinka woman previously sentenced> to death by stoning in > Nyala. >> SVTG can confirm that Abok, an 18 year old pregnant woman, was sentenced by the Criminal> Court in Nyala on 12> February to 75 lashes.
