A - ---> GHANA - SPECIAL REPORT
FAO/WFP CROP AND FOOD SUPPLY ASSESSMENT MISSION TO NORTHERN GHANA
13 March 2002 - OVERVIEW
In response to reports of unusually dry weather conditions affecting crop
production in the northern regions of Ghana from September 2001 onwards,
the Government requested FAO and WFP to carry out a joint assessment of the
food situation in the area. Accordingly, an FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply
Assessment Mission visited the country from 5 to 19 February 2002. Since
the visit was undertaken almost two months after the end of the normal
harvest period (October to December), its main objectives were to evaluate
the impact of the drought on crop production, livestock and food supplies
in the north of the country, and to determine whether there was or would be
a need for food aid. The mission was also charged with collating food-crop
production data that had been collected by the Ministry of Food and
Agriculture (MOFA) from other parts of the country and drawing up a
national food balance sheet for the 2001-2002 marketing year
(January/December).
