Le ministre de la communication interdit aux médias audiovisuels de couvrir
une manifestation de l'archevêque de Kinshasa

(JED/IFEX) - Toutes les chaînes de radiotélévision publiques et privées ont
reçu, le mercredi 10 janvier 2001 à 13 h00 (heure locale), injonction du
ministre de la communication, Dominique Sakombi Inongo, de ne pas couvrir,
sous peine d'interdiction, la manifestation du l'archevêque de Kinshasa, le
Cardinal Frédéric Etsou.
L'archevêque de Kinshasa a présidé, le mercredi 10 janvier, à 16h30, en
l'absence des médias audiovisuels, la cérémonie du lancement officiel du
projet "Le cri du Congo". Ce projet est une initiative artistique de
l'Église catholique du Congo pour le retablissement de la paix en
République démocratique du Congo. Le Grand Hôtel de Kinshasa (ex-Hôtel
Intercontinental), initialement prévu pour accueillir cette manifestation,
a fermé ses portes, pretextant une panne d'électricité dans la salle
"Congo", pourtant louée par l'archidiocèse de Kinshasa. La manifestion
s'est tout de même déroulée en la Cathédrale Notre Dame du Congo à
Kinshasa/Gombe.
L'audiovisuel privé est soumis à très rude épreuve depuis bientôt deux ans.
Déjà, aucune chaîne de radiotélévision privée ne peut diffuser des
émissions à caractère politique sauf celles qui encensent le gouvernement.

Minister of communications bars audio-visual media from covering Kinshasa
archbishop's event

(JED/IFEX) - On Wednesday 10 January 2001, at 1:00 p.m. (local time), all
public and private radio-television stations received an injunction from
Minister of Communications Dominique Sakombi Inongo barring them from
covering an event organised by Kinshasa's archbishop, Cardinal Frédéric
Etsou. The stations were told they would be banned if they did not obey the
ministerial order.
On Wednesday 10 January, at 4:30 p.m., Kinshasa's archbishop presided over
a ceremony marking the official launch of the project "Le cri du Congo"
(the Congo's Cry), in the absence of audio-visual media. The project is an
artistic initiative organised by the Congolese Catholic Church aimed at
reestablishing peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kinshasa's Grand
Hotel (formerly the Intercontinental Hotel), which was initially expected
to host the event, closed its doors, claiming there was an electrical
failure in the "Congo" Room. This very room had been rented by Kinshasa's
archidiocese. The event took place instead at the Notre Dame du Congo
Cathedral in Kinshasa/Gombe.
Private audio-visual stations have been subjected to a great deal of
hardship in the last two years. No private radio-television station is
permitted to broadcast political programmes, unless the programmes laud the
government.
