War isn't 'winding down'
Resistance attacks rise in Iraq
Leslie Feinberg, Workers World
Just when Washington, the Pentagon and the corporate media thought it was
safe to hype that the war in Iraq was "winding down" because the Iraqi
insurgents were being defeated, the resistance has proved them wrong again.
This upsurge in resistance has not made headlines in the U.S. monopolized
media, which has such strong ties to the military-industrial complex that
it marches in lock-step on the war...

Waiting for the Iraq 'Spectacular'
Fintan Dunne, BreakForNews.com
Up until now, military battle in Iraq of occupier versus resistance was
determined primarily by issues of military strategy. Now, U.S. public
opinion is the key determining factor. And this realization is driving the
military responses of both sides. As a result, the risk of 'spectacular'
attacks by the resistance has never been greater. The Iraqi resistance is
now gathering forces to launch large-scale attacks on American bases, in a
shift from th! e tactics of roadside bombs and hit-and-run attacks...

We are not welcome here. You Stay Away !!
Imad Khadduri, Free Iraq
Am not sure where exactly is the below sign carried, or where it might be
posted. It states: 'Please, A Very Serious Warning - We are authorized to
fire on any vehicle that approaches the convoy less than 50 meters'. If
placed on a moving Humvee, then you must be able to read it from 50 meters
afar, assuming that the gunner on a fast moving Humvee can himself measure
accurately the distance of objects moving towards him at a distance of 50 !
meters, and not being at 55 meters, for yet another easily discarded
statistic in the horrifically ignored "collateral damage" carnage...

A resistant and integrated country against occupation, confesionalism and
sectarism
First message from the Spanish delegation of CEOSI in Iraq - 21st April, 2005
IraqSolidaridad (www.nodo50.org/iraq, Translated into English by Lola
Oliván (CEOSI)
The electricity cuts have frustrated until now the sending of a first
message of the CEOSI Delegation that since last Monday, 18th April, is in
Iraq. Our arrive to Baghdad was quiet, although the siege imposed by the US
forces to Rutba, a town 130 Km. away fro! m the Jordanian border, did not
allow us to meet with the people that should have accompanied us to the
capital. The day before, the Resistance had destroyed two Humvee vehicles
in the near highway and, as reprisal, the US forces had blocked the entry
and exit of Rutba. Our intents of communicating with the US military were
useless, since they did not allow us to come closer than 500 meters of
their control check point...

Israel guns for Iran
Jude Wanniski, Aljazeera.net
...Sharon's assertion is that, as long as Iran is permitted to enrich
uranium for the nuclear power plants it is building and plans to build in
the future, it can acquire the capability of producing highly enriched
uranium (HEU). This was the same rationale Israel used in 1981 when it
bombed the almost-complete Usiraq nuclear power plant outside Baghdad.
Israeli officials acknowledged at the time that IAEA inspectors would have
control of the fissile material at U! siraq and that there was no evidence
Iraq had a weapons programme in violation of the NPT. But it insisted, as
Sharon does now regarding Iran, that it could not be permitted to develop
the technical ability to do so...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Friday, 22 April 2005
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice. http://www.freearabvoice.org
...In an appeal to the Board of Muslim 'Ulama' Scholars the highest Sunni
religious authority in Iraq, residents of the city of al-Mada'in demanded
to know the fate of their relatives who were abducted and presumably
imprisoned by the puppet police and so-called "Iraqi national guard" in the
course of the hoax regarding "Shi'i hosta! ges" several days ago. It was
later learned that there never had been any sectarian kidnappings of Shi'ah
nor any threats against them, but the puppet regime's "security" forces did
round up numerous local Sunnis whose whereabouts remain unknown...

A conference for Iraqi women leaders
Faiza Jarrar, A Family in Baghdad
I came back to Amman from the Dead Sea, where there was a conference for
Iraqi women leaders held there. Humm… I had a great curiosity to attend, to
discover the dialogue, the topics that were to be discussed, concerning the
future of Iraq, and the visions that could be adopted to manufacture that
future (...) I noticed that the Iraqi participants, men and women, who were
included in the conference's committees, had a common quality: they we! re
among the opposition against Saddam, they lived in America, they supported
the idea of war against Iraq to topple Saddam. And now they are
participating in conferences as coordinators between the American
administration and the Iraqi people, meaning; salesmen to market the
American ideas, and to ease the spreading of these ideas in the (New
Iraq)...

The U.S. and the Escalating Threat to the World
Nabila Harb, FAV - Axis of Logic
The U.S. and its Coalition of the Morally Bankrupt have used their invasion
of Iraq as a means through which to achieve many goals apart from its
primary goal of gaining control of Iraq and its natural resources. This war
has been a vehicle through which the U.S. not only elevated propaganda to
new heights at the expense of the truth, but actually undertook the murder
of independent journalists. By targeting journalists for murder, a! clear
threat was delivered to any one daring to publicise any facts in opposition
to the U.S. and Coalition goals...

Tomgram: Bacevich on the Neocon Revolution and Militarism
Tom Engelhardt & Andrew J. Bacevich
...Bacevich takes up the second generation of neocons, the new boys who
moved to Washington and, from various think tanks and front groups, laid
siege to governmental policy-making. Though the label neocon has
increasingly become one of opprobrium, Bacevich suggests that "the heat
generated by the term also stands as a backhanded tribute, an
acknowledgement that the neoconservative impact has been substantial." As
indeed! it has -- to the misfortune of us all. He suggests as well that
"one aspect of the neoconservative legacy has been to foster the
intellectual climate necessary for the emergence of the new American
militarism." His discussion of that legacy follows...

Why was there really a war?
Ryan Dawson
...So what are the real reasons for this war, and the sending of this
money? Answering this question is easy, all one has to do is look at who
will profit the most, cui bono? Currently the bulk (75%) of the money sent
to Israel must be spent on US weapons. The US arms industry is using the on
going conflict to make more money. The weapons industry is a business and
like any other giant US corporation they are corrupt and care nothing about
human rights or public welfare, th! ey only care about profits. This is not
simply a problem with accounting or confused CEOs. This is a problem with
immoral people who have realized that the American capitalist system places
profit over ethics. We are all suffering from the greed of upper class
America. No industry is as dangerous as the weapons industry, because they
are in the business of killing. A protracted war benefits arms and energy
companies. These companies pay for political campaigns...

Prophet's Birthday in Iraq Turns Anti-occupation
Samir Haddad, IOL Correspondent
Despite insecurity and chaos, Iraqis have gathered in the
predominantly-Sunni city of Al-Adamiya to celebrate Prophet Muhammad's
Birthday, intending not to turn the occasion into a political rally (...)
"No to America… No to Iran… (Iraqi) Sunnis and Shiites are brothers!" the
crowd shouted during the peak of the celebration late Wednesday, April 20 ,
denouncing what they said was Iran's interference in their country's
affairs, accusi! ng the Shiite Islamic Republic of inciting sectarian

U.S. Military Held Iraqis 'Hostage,' New Documents .
Files Also Show Commanders Authorized Brutal Treatment of Inmates
Chris Shumway, The NewStandard
Newly released government documents reveal that US military personnel
arrested and detained Iraqi civilians in an attempt to pressure relatives
suspected of involvement in the insurgency to turn themselves in. Other
documents released Monday by the Department of Defense in response to a
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request suggest that senior Army
commander! s encouraged interrogators to torture Iraqi detainees who had
not yet been "broken" during questioning. "These documents provide further
evidence that the chain of command in Iraq approved and even encouraged the
abuse of detainees held in US custody," said attorney Amrit Singh in a
statement from the American Civil Liberties Union announcing the release of
the documents...

Top Officers in Abu Ghraib Case Cleared
ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer
The Army has cleared four top officers — including the three-star general
who commanded all U.S. forces in Iraq — of all allegations of wrongdoing in
connection with prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, officials said Friday. Lt.
Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, who became the senior commander in Iraq in June 2003,
two months after the fall of Baghdad, had been faulted in earlier
investigations for leadership lapses that may have contributed to prisoner
abuse! . He is the highest ranking officer to face official allegations of
leadership failures in Iraq, but he has not been accused of criminal
violations...

Serious Mission Creep
The War in Iraq's Newest, Strangest Twist
Jason C. Ditz
The United States' ill-conceived invasion of Iraq is now well over two
years old. From the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal to the liberation (read: total
destruction) of Fallujah, we've seen some pretty amazing stretches of the
initial stated goal of the invasion. I would've thought nothing I read
about the mission of US troops in Iraq would surprise me anymore... but
something did Today, the Washington Times has an article describi! ng (with
their usual glowing approval) how the troops are tackling their latest
problem: gasoline bootlegging.

Let A Thousand Militias Bloom

In devising a strategy to defeat Iraq's insurgents, the Pentagon may be
gaining the upper hand but at the cost of pushing Iraq toward civil war. a
report in the Wall Street Journal. from Feb. 16 revealed that "pop-up
militias" are proliferating in Iraq. Not only is the U.S. aware of these
illegal militias, but the Pentagon is arming, training and funding them for
use them in counter-insurgency operations...

They May be Murderers, but They're Our Murderers.
Counter-insurgency death squads repeating history in Iraq
Abhinav Aima, CommonDreams.org
...Today, a report by Arun Gupta in The Indypendent, adds to previous
reporting by The Wall Street Journal reporter Greg Jaffe, elaborating on
how politicians backed by the U.S. in Iraq are running private militia
armies as counter-insurgency forces. While they receive some funding and
training from the U.S., these militia seem to operate with complete
plausible deniabilit! y - spook speak for running death squads without fear
of legal prosecution. Jaffe's report, from Feb. 16, identified these
militia, known to the U.S. military as "Unplanned Units," that went by
names such as Defenders of Baghdad, the Special Police Commandos, the
Defenders of Khadamiya and the Amarah Brigade...

Hostage hoax
Nermeen Al-Mufti, Al-Ahram Weekly
For almost a week media coverage of Iraq has been dominated by reports of a
hostage-taking crisis and sectarian tension in the city of Al-Madaen. Early
reports said Sunni militants had taken scores of Shia captive and were
demanding Shia residents evacuate from the city. Sunni and Shia clerics --
particularly the Al-Sadr movement -- warned the reports were a fabrication
intended to stir up sectarianism. But the Western media, particularly in
the US, continued reporti! ng on the incident. On Monday, when Iraqi forces
raided the city, the picture became a little clearer. They found no
hostages and met with little resistance...

Iraq: Tigris corpses still a mystery
Aljazeera.net
Medical sources in the town of al-Madain have cast doubts that 60 bloated
bodies recovered from a river in Iraq are those of civilians thought to
have been taken hostage there last week. On Thursday morning, Iraqi medical
sources said the tally of bodies recovered from the Tigris had risen to 60.
Earlier, President Jalal Talabani said the discovery proved that armed
Sunni fighters had seized up to 100 Shia last week in the town of
al-Madain, 20km southeast of Bag! hdad. But local officials said the bodies
have been floating to the surface for weeks, and there is no way of telling
where they came from...
