U-S Embassy orders diplomats not to use Baghdad's airport road

The U-S Embassy in Iraq is prohibiting its employees from using the
dangerous highway that links Baghdad and its international airport. The
British Foreign Office issued a similar order Monday. The ten-mile stretch
of road has been the scene of numerous roadside bombings and suicide
attacks on U-S targets.

3 U.S. soldiers accused of killing Iraqi

Three of the four U.S. soldiers accused of smothering an Iraqi general
during an interrogation last fall are facing the possibility of
court-martial. That decision will be made during an Article 32 hearing -
which is similar to a preliminary hearing in civilian court - set to begin
Thursday. The soldiers could get life in prison without parole if convicted
in the Nov. 26 death of Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush, 57, at Qaim, Iraq.
The A! rmy said Mowhoush died of asphyxiation from chest compression and
from being smothered...

U.S. Troop Level In Iraq To Grow

At Least 200,000 Fled Falluja, No Early Return Seen

More than 200,000 people who fled Falluja ahead of the U.S. offensive have
yet to return and many are in desperate need of aid, with temperatures in
Iraq heading toward freezing, a new U.N. emergency report says. Figures
compiled by the International Organization for Migration show that 210,600
people, or more than 35,000 families, took refuge in towns and villages
around Falluja in the build up to the U.S. assault, launched on Nov. 8

There is more and more reason to believe that the Americans used napalm or
another similar incendiary weapon - when accused of using napalm in the
original attack on Iraq, the Pentagon quibbled about the name, so it is
possible that the incendiary used was not exactly napalm - on the largely
civilian population of Falluja. Congratulations! This is the gold medal in
war crimes, so I hope all the apologists for the attack are happy that its
easily predictable result, the spread! ing of the insurgents of Falluja all
over the country where they can do much more damage, was worth it...

Insurgents mount attacks in Fallujah

A resurgence in armed actions broke out Tuesday in areas west of Fallujah
along a key highway leading to Jordan, just weeks after a massive U.S.-led
military offensive in the city (...) Heavily armed anti-American insurgents
on Tuesday took over and briefly held nine police stations and highway
checkpoints, blowing up two buildings, police said. Drivers reported that
insurgents also took control of large sections of the highway leading west
out of Iraq, stopping traffic and shaking down passengers...

US death toll in Fallujah reaches 71

Ever since the Abu Ghraib scandal broke, the Bush administration has
claimed that the abuses depicted in those horrible photos were an isolated
problem that was immediately fixed. The White House has repeatedly
proclaimed its respect for the Geneva Conventions, international law and
American statutes governing the treatment of prisoners. An article in The
Times on Tuesday by Neil A. Lewis showed how hollow those assurances are.
According to the International ! Committee of the Red Cross, prisoners at
Guantánamo Bay, where the United States warehouses men captured in
Afghanistan, have been subject to unremitting abuse that is sometimes
"tantamount to torture." This continued well after the Abu Ghraib scandal
came to light, and it may still be going on...
