35 US soldiers captured in Falluja: mosques

Mosques in Iraq's restive city of Falluja announced Monday that rebel
fighters inside the city have captured 35 US soldiers, reports Xinhua.
Loudspeakers at the mosques blared out the news as US forces were trying to
penetrate the rebel-held city. The news however could not be independently
confirmed (...) US officials said there may be more fierce fighting to come
if US forces try to enter downtown Falluja on the east bank of the river...

US airstrike near Iraq's Samarra kills 1, wounds 4

U.S. planes bombed targets just north of Iraq's restive city of Samarra on
Monday, killing one person and wounding four, police and hospital officials
said. The air strike came after insurgents mounted a string of suicide
bombings and attacks on police stations that killed 34 people and wounded
49 people in Samarra on Saturday. The mayor of Samarra, Taha al-Hindera,
told reporters the air strike hit the Jubairiya area outside the Sunni
Muslim city, 100 km (62 miles) north of Baghdad...

The Lancet and the bodies in question

It was the report that saw science and politics clash, and the fallout is
still being felt. A paper in the medical journal the Lancet which claimed
that almost 100,000 people have died since the invasion of Iraq has
prompted Jack Straw to launch an urgent inquiry into how casualty rates are
calculated. Dr Richard Horton, the Lancet's editor, staunchly defends the
report and called on more scientists to debate such issues (...) Horton
acknowledged the paper was 'at ypical' for the Lancet, but said he hoped
the journal would produce more of the same. 'We have a choice: do we want
the blood of Iraqi civilians and children on our hands or don't we? The
only way we know [what has happened] is by actually having scientists go
and get the data'...

US Troops Storm Fallujah, Kill 9

US and Iraqi troops backed by warplanes stormed Fallujah early Monday,
November 8 , seizing the main hospital and killing at least nine people, as
ground fire lit up the skies marking the start of a massive offensive to
occupy the restive city. US marines also took control of two bridges in the
southwest of Fallujah, spanning the Euphrates, while a large, white
observation balloon was seen hovering above, Agence France-Press (AFP)
reported (...) Witne sses told IslamOnline.net that the two bridges and
areas surrounding the hospital were not strategic for resistance fighters.
They said it is part of a US propaganda to lift up the spirits of the
invading troops, adding that US forces warned hospital staff over
loudspeakers not to leave the building. Hospital director Dr. Salih
al-Issawi told AFP that US troops refused to allow him and others to go
into the centre of Fallujah to help out at a medical facility that had been
set up there...

Marines turn to God ahead of anticipated Fallujah battle

With US forces massing outside Fallujah, 35 marines swayed to Christian
rock music and asked Jesus Christ to protect them in what could be the
biggest battle since American troops invaded Iraq last year (...) "Thus
David prevailed over the Philistines," the marine said, reading from
scripture, and the marines shouted back "Hoorah, King David," using their
signature grunt of approval. The marines drew parallels from the verse with
their present situation, where they perceive themselves as warriors
fighting barbaric men opposed to all that is good in the world. "Victory
belongs to the Lord," another young marine read (...) The marines then
lined up and their chaplain blessed them with holy oil to protect them.
"God's people would be annointed with oil," the chaplain said, as he
lightly dabbed oil on the marines' foreheads...

Had we awakened to a John Kerry victory, anyone seriously concerned about
the conflicts in Palestine and Iraq would have faced the stark reality that
Kerry offered nothing substantially different from President George W. Bush
in either situation. Yet that provides little consolation for seeing Bush
re-elected, as the desire to see him defeated had little to do with support
for Kerry. What many wanted was accountability - to see the author of s o
many disastrous policies thrown out. But a majority of American voters
handed a new mandate to Bush despite the fact that he started an illegal
war which may have cost the lives of 100,000 innocent Iraqis (according to
the latest study published in The Lancet) and more than 1,000 Americans...
