For Marines, a Frustrating Fight. Some in Iraq Question How and Why War Is
Being Waged
Steve Fainaru, Washington Post Staff Writer
..."I feel we're going to be here for years and years and years," said
Lance Cpl. Edward Elston, 22, of Hackettstown, N.J. "I don't think anything
is going to get better; I think it's going to get a lot worse. It's going
to be like a Palestinian-type deal. We're going to stop being a policing
presence and then start being an occupying presence. . . . We're always
going to be here. We'! re never going to leave" (...) Several members of
the platoon said they were struck by the difference between the way the war
was being portrayed in the United States and the reality of their daily
lives. "Every day you read the articles in the States where it's like, 'Oh,
it's getting better and better,' " said Lance Cpl. Jonathan Snyder, 22, of
Gettysburg, Pa. "But when you're here, you know it's worse every day"...

New Yorker writer Seymour Hersh blast Bush over Iraqi war
ASSOCIATED PRESS
...Hersh, best known for breaking the My Lai massacre story in Vietnam and
his coverage of the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib in Iraq, was
speaking at a discussion on "Resisting Government Secrecy in a Time of
Terrorism," organized by the California First Amendment Coalition and the
Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley. It is part of a two-day
conference on government secrecy. Speaking about how U.S. intelligence
failed to pene! trate the insurgency in Iraq, Hersh said sources indicated
that "the war in Iraq is done, the insurgency has won the war"...

Ayoon wa Azan (Hope They are Lying)
Jihad Al Khazen, Al-Hayat
I wish that the major Iranian officials are lying, and that the Iranian
nuclear weapons program would be used for the production of nuclear
warheads rather than for peaceful purposes, as they declared (...) It is
definitely much better to have Iran and all other countries disarmed;
however, as long as Israel possesses these weapons and the means to deliver
them to their targets, it is the duty of every country in the region to
possess similar weapons, ! in order to confront the Israeli threat (...)
After Baghdad, the next target has now become Tehran. Could Riyadh or Cairo
be next? I am not inventing anything; the difference between others and
myself is that I read, and the Israeli followers are so impudent that they
actually state their ideas; I have come upon their necessity to destroy
Iraq and Iran's power...

Scouring Iraq for Enemies, Finding Farmers and Mud
JAMES GLANZ, New York Times
House-to-house raids in this dangerous swath of territory about 30 miles
south of Baghdad are turning up few men of fighting age, leading American
commanders to believe that insurgents are melting away ahead of troops who
are trying to bring the area under Iraqi control. At the same time,
intelligence here has been sketchy, leading to nighttime raids on what
appear to be no more than frightened farm families. And the rural terrain -
ir! rigation-soaked roads that are either too narrow for armored vehicles
or too weak to support their weight - partly negate the Americans' vast
technological advantage...

Ex-UN inspectors slam Bush, Blair
Aljazeera.net
Two former UN weapons inspectors have poured scorn on US President George
Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair for seeking to defend their Iraq
invasion. Writing for The Independent on Sunday, former UN chief arms
inspector in Iraq Hans Blix says the two leaders are "clinging to straws"
to justify the war. Writing for the same newspaper, another former weapons
inspector, Scott Ritter, said: "History will judge that Britain and the
United States made the world ! a worse place with their war on Iraq"...

A lawsuit alleges fraud by the U.S. company and threats against a worker
and his son
T. Christian Miller, Times Staff Writer
One of the highest-profile security companies in Iraq has been suspended
from doing business with the U.S. government after being accused of
overbilling millions of dollars through a series of sham companies. Custer
Battles, a security firm based in Virginia, sent fake bills to the U.S.-led
Coalition Provisional Authority that had run Iraq during the U.S.
occupation, according to an Air For! ce memo obtained by The Times. The
company, which provided all security at the Baghdad airport, is also the
target of a lawsuit unsealed Friday that accuses employees of
systematically bilking U.S. taxpayers and threatening one worker and his
14-year-old son at gunpoint...

Bush's Crimes. Impeach the president? Yes. A well-documented case ties him
to Abu Ghraib.
BOB NORMAN
President Bush is coming to town Thursday night to debate John Kerry and
try to earn your vote. But the question emerging now is not whether he
should be elected but if he should be impeached for war crimes. Remember
when the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal broke with all those detestable
pictures and the administration repeated that it was the fault of a "few
bad apples"? Well, they were right. Thankfully, the ba! d apples have been
identified: John Ashcroft, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, and President
Bush...

Mounting Iraqi deaths as US tries to reassert control over Iraq
Iqbal Siddiqui, Media Monitors Network
September 2004 was described as "a month of death in Iraq" by one Arab
commentator after a series of major clashes in which at least a thousand
Iraqis, many of them civilians, were killed. In just the week ending
September 18, 300 civilians were recorded as having been killed by US
operations and in attacks by resistance fighters, many more wounded, and at
least 16 US troops killed. Behind the stark casualty fig! ures are massive

Negroponte and the IRI: Rigging Iraq's Imposed Election
Kurt Nimmo
According to Reuters: The Bush administration plans to give strategic
advice, training and polling data to what it deems as "moderate and
democratic" Iraqi political parties with candidates running in the
country's upcoming elections, government documents show. Political-party
building efforts in Iraq will be overseen by John Negroponte, the U.S.
ambassador to Iraq, but much of the work would be done through two
nongovernmental organizations, t! he International Republican Institute and
the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. John
"Nicaraguan death squad" Negroponte? Either the Bushcons think we're stupid
or suffer from habitual memory loss. Of course, considering what the
Straussian neocons have in mind for the people of Iraq, Negroponte, an
Iran-Contra alumnus, is the prefect choice. He supported the brutal
military dictatorship of General Gustavo Alvarez Martinez in Honduras...

Special Report. The Abu Ghraib Supplementary Documents. The Center for
Public Integrity posts classified documents that form the basis of the
Taguba report
Alexander Cohen
The military's mission at Abu Ghraib was inadequately planned almost from
conception. It was subordinated to political and intelligence goals and
bogged down at every level by inadequate resources and hostile conditions,
according to classified documents reviewed and now posted by the Center for
Public Integrity. The documents, the first insta! llment of background
materials from Army Major General Anthony Taguba's investigation into
abuses of military detainees in Iraq, were provided to the Center by
Rolling Stone contributor Osha Gray Davidson. The Center plans to post the
