Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Tuesday, 5 October 2004 through
Friday, 8 October 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice.
The American Associated Press (AP) reported that south of Baghdad in the
al-Yusufiyah area, more than 3,000 US troops and their Iraqi stooges
launched a major operation against the Iraqi Resistance as a part of their
strategy of eliminating cities and towns under the control of the Iraqi
Resistance. The correspondent of Mafkara! t al-Islam reported that the US
had thrown 1,200 troops and some 850 Iraqi puppet soldiers into the
al-Yusufiyah campaign. The operation in al-Yusufiyah in Babil Province
follows the effort by the United States to wipe out Resistance in the city
of Samarra'. There, US forces unleashed massive firepower to kill large
numbers of civilians. Despite American claims to have "retaken" Samarra',
nearly half of the city reportedly remains in Resistance hands...

Pentagon meddling crippled post-war humanitarian aid for Iraq: US experts
AFP
...Interference by the Pentagon delivered a massive blow to efforts to
provide humanitarian relief for Iraq after last year's war, according to
two US aid experts who struggled with the conflict's chaotic aftermath. In
trenchant criticism, the pair say the Department of Defense alienated aid
workers, misjudged the scale of looting that wrecked Iraq's health service
and sent out bureaucrats who only served to complicate matters...

Child death rate rises in Iraq
AP
...The UNICEF study is a report card on whether countries are fulfilling a
goal adopted by world leaders at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000 which
calls for child mortality to be reduced by two-thirds by 2015. Iraq, which
has lost two wars since 1991 and was under UN sanctions for over a decade,
lost the most ground of any nation.
It was the only country in the Middle East and North Africa where the child
mortality rate increased from 1990 to 2002. One in 10 Iraqi children under
5 died in 2002 while in 1990 the rate was one in 20.

Our Misinformed President
Jude Wanniski
...Having said that, I remind you that in the years leading up to the war,
I sent you a series of memos, some private, some publicly posted here as
"memos on the margin" as open letters to you. In each, I made the case that
Iraq was not a threat to anyone, here or in the Middle East, that it had no
weapons of mass destruction or WMD programs, etc. This week, Charles
Duelfer of the Iraq Survey Group told Congress that after spending several
hundred million taxpayer dollars l! ooking for evidence to justify the war
against Iraq, it has found nothing at all. Zip. All my reports to you were
correct and all the reports coming to the President from his national
security team were wrong...

Orwell Goes to War
t r u t h o u t
We live in Orwellian times, where obvious falsehoods are asserted brazenly
as the truth. The day after the final report of the Iraq Survey Group
confirmed that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and no active
programs to produce them, Vice President Dick Cheney blithely asserted that
the report justified the invasion of Iraq. No, Mr. Vice President, the
report shattered the last forlorn hope that the war was necessary...

all'azione».
completamente diversa....

Tomgram: Michael Klare on oil wars and the American military
Tom Engelhardt
So here we are. The price of a barrel of crude oil leapt to $52.02 on the
New York Mercantile Exchange yesterday, having breached the $51 level only
the day before, and today it briefly cracked $53 on its way to… well, who
knows where? At just this moment, the Energy Department is predicting that
consumers in the Northeast will be paying $1,223 for heating-oil this
winter, a leap of 28% over last year. Meanwhile in Iraq, the administratio!
n's great oil adventure is aflame (...) The Iraqis themselves, situated on
one of the globe's great oil reservoirs, are at present forced to import
gasoline and other petroleum products from elsewhere over ever more
dangerous supply lines...

Exiting Iraq is the Only Solution
Andrew Greeley, Chicago Sun Times
...It is absurd to say that the world is safer now that Saddam Hussein is
in custody. In fact, there are thousands of terrorists today who did not
exist before the invasion of Iraq. Certainly, Iraq is not safer. The only
solution is to admit we made a terrible mistake -- as we did in Vietnam --
and withdraw our troops. This will be a humiliating defeat, but then, so
was Vietnam, and the nation survived. The elder George Bush is said to have
advi! sed his son to develop an Iraq exit plan before the invasion. He did
not, and those children died because he did not...

Messy business
The Guardian
Iraq's state-run industries are crumbling and as yet little has been done
to revitalise them, writes Rory McCarthy. For 29 years Mohsin Awad has
worked as a mechanic at the May 1 plant of the State Company for Woollen
Industries. It is a menial but respectable job that pays a comfortable
salary and comes with a small house nearby at a peppercorn rent. Like the
150,000 employees of Iraq's state-owned industries, he presumed it was a
job for life. Then came the war last year...

neoconservatives and their Christian Right allies are nonetheless trying
hard to prepare the ground for future U.S. adventures in the Middle East...

Straussian Neocons: Wielding Influence Forever More?
Kurt Nimmo
...But is Iraq a quagmire or something else? Is it possible what is going
on in Iraq is precisely what the Straussian neocons desire—a social and
cultural breakdown of the Arab world resulting in a realignment along
ethnic and tribal lines? Currently there is a lot of talk of civil war in
Iraq—a conflict likely to result in the fragmentation of the country and
the creation of small, ethnically comprised mini-states. More than
anything, Israel fears A! rab nationalism, especially pan-Arab
nationalism...

Giulietto Chiesa: l'informazione sull'Iraq? Manipolata, mistificata,
unilaterale e bugiarda
Carlo Emanuele Trappolino, Articolo 21
elezioni in queste condizioni, per me, è incredibile. Tuttavia,
pubblica, pubblica internazionalmente, e a quanto pare neanche Kofi Annan,

Cheney: Less terror in Israel with Saddam out of the way
The Associated Press
Vice President Dick Cheney said during the only vice-presidential campaign
debate Tuesday night that there have been fewer suicide attacks in Israel
because Saddam Hussein is no longer around to support suicide bombers.
Cheney touted President George W. Bush's policy moves to support the
establishment of two Mideast states, and said Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasser Arafat is not "an interlocutor you can trust and deal
with." His De! mocratic opponent, Sen. John Edwards said over the last four
years the United States has been largely absent from the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process. He said Israel has a right to defend
itself and said Arafat is not a "partner for peace"...

Washington's new terror in Iraq
Nicole Colson, Socialist Worker
"I BLAME the Americans for this tragedy." With those words, Abdel-Hadi
al-Badri, a cleric at the al-Mubashroun al-Ashra mosque in Baghdad, broke
down in tears during Friday prayers last week. The day before, 35 children
were killed when Iraqi insurgents attacked a celebration staged by U.S.
forces to mark the opening of a small sewage plant. Nearly a dozen Iraqi
adults were also killed, and more than 140 people were wounded (...) "They
wanted to mak! e human shields out of our children," al-Badri, whose son
lost a leg in the explosion, told the Associated Press...

Lies Upon Lies. Is There Still Time to Impeach Bush?
JASON LEOPOLD
John Dean, the former counsel to President Richard Nixon, made a case last
year for impeaching President George W. Bush if the president intentionally
misled Congress and the public into backing a war with Iraq. "To put it
bluntly, if Bush has taken Congress and the nation into war based on bogus
information, he is cooked," Dean wrote in a June 6, 2003 column for
findlaw.com. "Manipulation or deliberate misuse of national security
intelligence dat! a, if proven, could be "a high crime" under the
Constitution's impeachment clause. It would also be a violation of federal
criminal law, including the broad federal anti-conspiracy statute, which
renders it a felony "to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in
any manner or for any purpose"...

Washington's Weapons Of Mass Deception
Edward W. Miller, www.globalresearch.ca
Bush's pre-emptive "SHOCK AND AWE" against the Iraqis, was outright
terrorism. A hidden, more deadly terrorism was the first Gulf War followed
by the 13-years of Oil-for Food semi-starvation, daily US overflights with
bombing, and a US-planned bacterial genocide created by destroying Iraq's
potable water facilities plus a UN embargo to prevent Iraqis from both
cleaning up their water and even treating the water-born plagues...

Bush's Case for War Crumbles
Jim Lobe, AntiWar
Is there anything at all left of the Bush administration's case for going
to war in Iraq or, for that matter, the way it has been fought? The answer
seems increasingly doubtful given what appears to be an accelerating
cascade of news, leaks and admissions by senior administration officials
over the past several weeks. Consider what has been disclosed in just the

Iraqis may sue US over invasion
Aljazeera.net
A US report stating Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction since
1991 should pave the way for Iraqis to sue US-led forces for invading the
country, an Iraqi politician has said. Iyad al-Samarrai of the Iraqi
Islamic Party said on Thursday that the report, drafted by the chief US
weapons inspector in Iraq Charles Duelfer, proves the war was "not
legitimate"...
