At least 80 killed in Samarra assault
The Guardian
At least 80 people were reported dead today after US and Iraqi forces
launched a major assault to regain control of the rebel stronghold of
Samarra. Troops of the US 1st Infantry Division, the Iraqi National Guard
and Iraqi army moved into the town, about 60 miles north of Baghdad, after
midnight under cover of heavy air and artillery fire. By the early hours of
today, the offensive had succeeded in securing government and police
buildings, the US military comman! d said...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Wednesday, 29 September 2004 through
Thursday, 30 September 2004
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member editorial board The
Free Arab Voice
Iraqi forces pounded US troops in their base in base in the Ridwaniyat
ad-Duwaylibah area of Mazra`at `Uday south of Baghdad Wednesday morning
inflicting such severe casualties on the Americans that for the first time
since the US invasion of Iraq, the US troops totally evacuated their base.
The Americans left behind ! numerous dead as well as smashed cars and
armored vehicles. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the area visited
the inside of the reclaimed US base with the first wave of local people to
visit the facility - a visit that took place at exactly 6:45pm Wednesday
night - only fifteen minutes after the last American soldier vacated the
premises...

The Media's Culpability for Iraq
John Pilgerm AntiWar
In October 1999, I stood in a ward of dying children in Baghdad with Denis
Halliday, who the previous year had resigned as assistant secretary general
of the United Nations. He said: "We are waging a war through the United
Nations on the people of Iraq. We're targeting civilians. Worse, we're
targeting children. . . . What is this all about?"...

Everything that we see going on in Iraq today has to be seen in the light
of the long-standing Zionist plans for the Middle East
xymphora
The essay, 'A Strategy for Israel in the Nineteen Eighties', by Oded Yinon,
published in 1982, contains the following paragraph on Iraq (italics in
original): "Iraq, rich in oil on the one hand and internally torn on the
other, is guaranteed as a candidate for Israel's targets. Its dissolution
is even more important for us than that of Syria. In the short r! un it is
Iraqi power which constitutes the greatest threat to Israel..."

deployed as a soldier in Iraq. We are joined in our studio by Guardsman

A FAILED "TRANSITION": THE MOUNTING COSTS OF THE IRAQ WAR
A Study by the Institute for Policy Studies and Foreign Policy In Focus
'A Failed 'Transition' is the most comprehensive accounting of the mounting
costs of the Iraq war on the United States, Iraq, and the world. Among its
major findings are stark figures about the escalation of costs in these
most recent three months of "transition" to Iraqi rule, a period that the
Bush administration claimed would be characterized by falling human and

CBS cancels broadcast on Bush's use of forged Iraqi WMD documents
Patrick Martin
In a development that highlights the cowardice and subservience of the US
media—and suggests there is far more to the so-called "memogate" affair at
CBS News than has so far been made public—the network confirmed September
27 that it had cancelled a planned "60 Minutes" broadcast exposing the use
of forged documents by the Bush administration in the run-up to the Iraq
war. The program focused on documents supplied to the US embassy i! n Italy
that allegedly confirmed Iraqi efforts to acquire large quantities of
uranium in the west African country of Niger during the last years of
Saddam Hussein's regime...

Iraq's Pentagon Policy for Iraqi Troops Failing Badly
Sam Hamod
Not only is the U.S. training of Iraqi police and military going slowly but
even those trained have little allegiance to Allawi or to America. This has
been seen in battles in Najaf, in Fallujah, in Karbala and in Baghdad.
Somehow America has not yet grasped the fact that Iraq is a traditional
society, not an American nuclear non-traditional society. In the
traditional society of Iraq, family, tribes and friendships outweigh
monetary or political gai! n...

Iraq's economy crippled by heavy debt and foreign hegemony
Mustafa Jalal, Media Monitors Network
On June 28, after a hurried transfer of power to a few Iraqi cronies, Paul
Bremer, who used to be the undisputed ruler of Iraq, boarded a military
airplane without even waiting to receive John Negroponte, the newly
appointed American ambassador to Iraq. Bremer left, but his legacy did not.
This legacy will no doubt influence the policies of the transitional Iraqi
government. That, in turn, is one of the institutions e! stablished by
Bremer, whose job it was to perpetuate the US' s priorities and policies in
Iraq. A barrage of binding decrees was passed during the US occupation...

Lawmaker expresses "dismay" that White House allegedly wrote Allawi speech
AFP
In a letter to the White House, a leading US Senate Democrat expressed
"profound dismay" that the White House allegedly wrote a large portion of
Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's speech to Congress last week. "I want to
express my profound dismay about reports that officials from your
administration and your reelection campaign were 'heavily involved' in
writing parts of Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's speech," California Senator
Dianne! Feinstein wrote in a letter to President George W. Bush...

Allawi Couldn't Have Said It Any Better Himself
Dana Milbank, Washington Post
It's a political whodunit: Since Ayad Allawi delivered his address to a
joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, foreign policy devotees have been
searching for the ghostwriter of the speech, which sounded curiously
familiar to American ears. The White House denies that anybody in the
administration did it. Several of the usual suspects outside the
administration, including former White House officials Karen Hughes, Dan
Senor and David Fr! um, have also denied culpability. But those searching
for a ghostwriter of the Allawi speech may be overthinking things. Maybe
the prime minister simply went to the White House Web site and combed
through some of President Bush's speeches. Consider the similarities...

Iraq: Sanatized Slaughter
Ted Lang
Considering the abundance of horror photos on the Internet showing our
military's success in terms of air strike attacks upon civilian targets
causing a staggering loss of life, and showing small children who have lost
arms and legs, and the endless photos of dead babies who never had a chance
at life thanks to America's selfless zeal to bring democracy to the Iraqis,
one needs to demand: Where are the mainstream media accounts of these
atrocities?

Witnesses: U.S. troops fired at car carrying children
ASSOCIATED PRESS
U.S. forces on Thursday attacked a suspected safehouse used by an al-Qaeda
linked group in Fallujah, the military said. Hospital officials said at
least four Iraqis were killed and eight wounded. Also, witnesses said U.S.
forces opened fire Wednesday on a car passing Fallujah on the road west
from Baghdad. The driver was shot in the head and lost control of the car,
which plunged into a canal, said witness Hussein Alwan, who lives near the
sce! ne. A man was brought to Fallujah General Hospital late Wednesday with
a bullet wound to the head, Dr. Ahmed Khalil said. Later, the bodies of two
women and five children arrived.

Pentagon Iraq strategy 'failing'
Nick Childs, BBC's Pentagon correspondent
A key element of the current US strategy in Iraq, the training of Iraqi
forces, is still proceeding too slowly, a new report by a US think-tank
says. Iraqis will not be able to take over the most demanding security
roles until late 2005-06, the Center for Strategic and International
Studies' report says. The report was published by a respected military
analyst, Anthony Cordesman. Many experts have said that the Pentagon does
not have an ef! fective strategy to deal with the insurgency...

Oil-rich Iraqi provinces push for autonomy
Roula Khalaf
Iraq's oil-rich southern provinces are considering plans to set up an
autonomous region - a move that reflects their growing frustration with the
central government in Baghdad. Members of the municipal council of Basra,
Iraq's second largest city, have been holding talks with officials from
councils in two neighbouring provinces on establishing a federal region in
the south, following the example of the Kurdish north. The three provinces
- Basra, Missan and ! Dhiqar - account for more than 80 per cent of the
proved oil reserves of the country's 18 provinces and provide a large share
of the national income...

Guerra ai nemici di Israele
David Hirst da Senza Pace, Nuovi Mondi Media
.... Con il pretesto di privare l'Iraq delle sue armi di distruzione di
massa, gli Stati Uniti cercano di "ridisegnare" l'intero Medio Oriente,
facendo di questo paese fondamentale e riccamente dotato il fulcro di un
nuovo ordine geopolitico filo-americano.
