Iraqi defends his Israel visit

The former Iraqi official in charge of disbanding Iraq's Baath Party,
Mithal al-Alousi, reportedly said Sunday he was not the only Iraqi to visit
Israel. The London-based ash-Sharq al-Awsat quoted al-Alousi, who was fired
from his position for visiting Israel, as threatening to sue those who had
terminated him from his post. He told the Arabic-language daily "incumbent
officials and leaders in Iraq have gone on secret visits to Israel," adding
there were also leaders in the Iraq! i National Congress, led by Ahmad
Chalabi, who went to the Jewish state...

Chemical weapons turn out to be everywhere except Iraq

and costing billions to clean up elsewhere - from concrete "igloos" in
Oregon, to the Panama rainforest, to the highlands of China, where Japanese

munitions have turned up lately in Australia than in Iraq, where the Bush
administration claimed up to 500 tons would be found. As ! arms hunters
searched Baghdad in vain, chemical weapons material was being unearthed in
Washington, four miles from the White House...

Killings Surge in Iraq, and Doctors See a Procession of Misery

Business is booming at the Baghdad morgue. Before the war, before the fall
of Saddam Hussein's government, seven or eight bodies arrived each day at
this nondescript building in northeastern Baghdad for autopsies. Most
deaths resulted from car crashes or other accidents. Killings were rare,
and gun violence rarer still, a testament to the monopoly that Mr. Hussein
held on the use of force. Now the paper-and-cardboard ledgers where the au!
topsies are logged are torn from overuse. On an average day, the morgue
receives 20 to 25 bodies, the human cost of the post-war wave of crime and
insurgency engulfing the city.

Iraqi colonel arrested as a rebel spy

A colonel in the Iraqi National Guard has been arrested on charges of
aiding insurgents by passing on tip-offs about planned raids on resistance
safe houses. Samir Al-daraji led a unit of Iraqi troops that carried out
raids around the rebel-held city of Samarra, north west of Baghdad.
American troops arrested him last week after a series of operations went
wrong and troops attacked empty houses that had previously been identified
as resistance command centres...!

Falluja doctors decry civilian death toll

US warplanes, tanks and artillery units have renewed their assault on
Falluja, killing and wounding many women and children, medical sources said
late on Saturday. At least 15 people were killed and 25 wounded in what US
military authorities are calling a precision strike targeting "terrorists

Video of U.S. bombing a large group civilians in Fallujah

"September 24, 7:33 pm. A friend just sent me this link to what is dubbed
the "Fallujah Video Massacre." A quick search has turned up nothing on the
provenance of the video, but it looks very military. The town being bombed
looks exactly like Fallujah, with wide low buildings and broad roadways,
but again I can't say for sure that it is...

Allawi safety claims 'out of touch with reality' say Iraqis

the interim Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, before the US Congress that 14 or
15 out of Iraq's 18 provinces "are completely safe." "The truth is exactly

Baghdad mosque raided

US and Iraqi national guards have raided a mosque in western Baghdad,
claiming they were searching for weapons. Deputy head of the Higher Council
for Propagation and Guidance, Shaikh Mahdi al-Sumaidi, told Aljazeera that
up to 100 Iraqi police stormed the Ibn Taimiya mosque on Saturday morning.
In the "second incident" of its kind, al-Sumaidi said, contents of the
mosque, such as furniture and Qurans, were thrown around during the raid...
