The Sistani Puzzle. Did The Grand Ayatollah Collude With The US Assault On
Najaf?
Milan Rai, ZNet
Blunder or conspiracy? There are at least three possible accounts of the
origins of the recent Najaf conflict. Uncovering the truth requires a close
scrutiny of the behaviour of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, now feted as
the peace-bringer of Najaf. The standard Western media rendering is that
(for some unknown reason) militant Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr decided to
launch an uprising against the US occupation on 5 August...

U.S. Strike on Fallujah Kills 9 Civilians
Associated Press
A U.S. airstrike on the city of Fallujah early Thursday killed nine
civilians, including three children, and wounded six others, hospital
officials said. The strike, wh! ich hit a residential house in the southern
neighborhood of al-Jubail, came just after midnight, witnesses said. U.S.
forces have repeatedly carried out airstrikes in Fallujah, west of Baghdad,
since Marines ended a three-week siege of the city in April aimed at
rooting out Sunni Muslim insurgents...

US-Iraq-Israel-zionist connection
James Petras and Robin Eastman-Abaya
...Who benefited then from the US war? By examining the beneficiaries we
can get an idea who had a motive for promoting this crime against humanity.
The onl! y major beneficiary of the war is the State of Israel, which
succeeded in having the US destroy its most consistent Arab adversary in
the Middle East – the regime that extended the greatest political support
to the Palestinian resistance. Together with Iran and Syria they formed the
core resistance to Israeli expansionist plans to expel the Palestinians and
conquer and occupy all of Palestine...

A no-win situation
PAUL KRUGMAN
Last Sunday The New York Times confirmed that while the world’s attention
was focused on Najaf, western Iraq fell firmly under rebel control.
Representatives of the US-installed government have b! een intimidated,
assassinated or executed. Other towns, like Samarra, have also fallen to
insurgents. Attacks on oil pipelines are proliferating. And we’re still
playing whack-a-mole with Muqtada al-Sadr: his Mahdi Army has left Najaf,
but remains in control of Sadr City, with its two million people.

...This is no evidence of failure; nor are the missing weapons of mass

Baldoni, Malbrunot, Chesnot, bombe alle moschee, decapitazioni, ordigni tra

Blood on Whose Hands?
Felicity Arbuthnot, IslamOnline
...This illegal invasion has meant that everyone in Iraq is now a potential
“victim of terror,” residents and invaders alike. But the invaders have an
option: they can leave! (and take their puppet government with their
foreign passports with them.) Only then will normality and stability
gradually return, and shattered lives, homes, shrines, cities be rebuilt.
And maybe in time, foreigners too will again be able to walk the streets of
what remains of Iraq’s wondrous heritage till late in the night and hear,
as before, only, “Welcome, welcome, welcome...”

Republican Convention "We did not seek this War"
Juan Cole, Informed Comment
...And pretending that the US had no choice but to attack Iraq and reduce
it to a pitiful failed state is flatly dishonest (...) It dissolved the
Iraq! i army, throwing the country into chaos. That army was not gone and
would have gladly showed up at the barracks for a paycheck. It pursued a
highly punitive policy of firing and excluding members of the Baath Party,
which was not done in so thorough-going a manner even to Nazis in post-war
Germany. It canceled planned municipal elections, denying people any stake
in their new "government," which was more or less appointed by the US. It
put all its efforts into destroying Arab socialism in Iraq and creating a
sudden free market...

Dubbi sui rapitori.

Abu Ghraib hearing will not seek testimony from Iraqi inmates
The News International
A US Army judge ruled on Tuesday that a special military hearing for an
American soldier accused of abusing Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib prison!
will not seek testimony from ex-prisoners as it would be too difficult to
arrange. Judge Colonel Denise Arn made the decision at a hearing for
Private Lynndie England, 21, known around the world from a photograph
showing her holding a leash attached to the neck of a naked inmate at Abu
Ghraib, after prosecutors said it could take days to track ex-inmates.

Talks to Disarm Rebel Shiites Collapses in Iraq
DEXTER FILKINS and ERIK ECKHOLM, NYTimes
Talks to disarm hundreds of insurgents in the roiling Sadr City ghetto in
Baghdad collapsed Tuesday, after a tentative peace pact was abru! ptly
canceled by Prime Minister Ayad Allawi. Leaders of the Mahdi Army, the
rebel force led by the Shiite cleric Moktada al-Sadr, and two well-placed
Iraqi sources said an agreement had been reached late Monday that called
for the disarming of the rebel force and a halt in American military
operations in Sadr City. Mahdi Army commanders and other Iraqi sources said
Tuesday that Dr. Allawi backed out of the agreement on Tuesday morning...
