Earlier today activists from Seeds of Peace and the Boston Center for
Non-Violent Social Change were detained and searched for 4 and half-hours.
Activists from Seeds of Peace arrived in Boston with their bus converted to
be utilized as a mobile kitchen for events in Boston during the DNC as well
as the DNC2RNC march. The Boston Center for Non-Violent Social Change had
secured a lease on private property to park the bus through the week of the
DNC.
When the bus pulled into park in the lot Boston Police arrived to inspect
their presence. The police inquired as to what was on the bus and the
activist informed them that they possessed propane tanks necessary for
cooking at events. The police officer then called the fire department to
search the bus for possible hazard materials. The activists informed the
police officer that they did not consent to a search but were informed that
the fire department did not require a warrant to search.
The activists then contacted the National Lawyers Guild to seek assistance.
The Lawyers promptly responded to the call and arrived on the seen to assist
in answering, and not answering questions.
Shortly there after three fire tucks, EMS, haz-mat, Bomb Squad, and officers
from the Secret Service, Homeland security, state police, and the FBI came
to investigate the supposedly dangerous kitchen. After four hours of
attempted interrogation, dog sniffing and investigation the police left with
4 empty propane tanks and one full one. They also searched the activist's
medical supplies but later determined them harmless.
This event was yet another waist of the city and states recources as well as
an abuse of our civil Liberties. Add this to the number of unwarranted
preemptive assault on activists leading up to the DNC.
None of the activists were arrested however with the propane confiscated
they are left wondering how they are going to prepare the food for activists
that they had planned. The National Lawyers Guild is researching legal
issues around storing propane and weather the Seeds of Peace will get back
their propane tanks. In the mean time, if anyone has access to propane tanks
or money to donate for buying them please e-mail coffeepoo3 (at) yahoo.com
or call 617.492.8473.
