Nonviolence International Calls for Global Fast to Stop the Killing in
Palestine and Israel
(Washington, D.C) Nonviolence International (NVI), a worldwide network of
activists, announces a global Fast for Peace campaign between April 8th and
May 12th (Mother's Day in North America), 2002. Citizens around the world
will fast, wear ribbons, and send petitions to leaders demanding an
immediate end to the killing in Israel and Palestine. NVI founder Dr.
Mubarak Awad says, "From now until Mother's Day, there are important steps
that everyone in the world can take to promote a just peace in the Middle
East."
NVI is announcing three actions from now until May 12th. Firstly, NVI is
organizing a Fast for Peace. NVI activist, Leah Wells calls upon everyone
who has a mother "to fast for one meal, one day, one week or more. Send the
money saved on meals to humanitarian agencies through links found on the
NVI
website, www.nonviolenceinternational.net."
In addition to the fast, NVI proposes that individuals wear a blue-green
lapel ribbon expressing solidarity and empathy with victims. The ribbons
are
available from the NVI website and can also be easily made. They are two
colors, green for Palestine and blue for Israel. According to Dr. Edy
Kaufman, "the ribbon represents the aspirations of all people of goodwill
who want to see Israelis and Palestinians live with peace and dignity."
Finally, NVI is announcing a movement to send letters and petitions calling
on all leaders to take steps to stop the killing. Dr. Lukacs emphasizes
that "enough is enough. Contact your national government or mission at the
UN and let them know that the killing must end." NVI board member, Dr.
Abdul Aziz Said adds, "The whole world needs the whole world to make
peace."
Nonviolence International was founded in 1989 and has affiliates around the
world.
