This is an update on the latest developments, sent to
all who responded to our first appeal relative to new
weapons, dated 8 August 2006.

This morning Marcello left to Beirut as a delegate
from the group NuoveArmi; he is a professional nurse
with experience of work in war zones, as he was in
Afhganistan for 6 months with the Italian NGO
Emergency. He will meet with a number of lebanese
medical doctors and scientists, which we have reached
thanks to the involvement of other scientists network,
journalists, local and international NGOs, and direct
personal contacts.

Although no conclusion can be drawn at this time, by
analyzing the evidence that have reached us, we
suspect that more than one new experimental weapons
were tested in the Lebanese and Palestinian theater at
the beginning of the conflict. Subsequent widespread
bombing with conventional weapons, however, have
probably concealed most direct evidence, and also has
directed the attention of most people on the possible
war crimes related to the killing of over 1000
civilians.

As we are aware that there are also scientists who put
their science at the service of war, we consider it is
time to remember that our responsability as
scientists, should be instead to make the world a more
helthy, easier, better place for all. Thus, we feel
the duty to help the victims of mass destruction
weapons and to gard the line that brings to even
higher escalation of warfare through the use of new
technologies.


We are now working in three main directions:

1.
Investigating as deeply as possible a few case
studies, and provide scientific explanation of the
observations made by local doctors. The results of
this enquiry will be made public through all
appropriate means: scientific publications, press
conferences and/or mass media services. We will also
consider the possibility of presenting results to
international legal institutions, if we consider it to
be appropriate.

2.
Preparing a folder describing the weapons and their
effects, to be of help for medical and first
assistance personnel in case of further use of these
weapons.

3.Organizing and setting up a web site to allow for
rapid and reliable exchange of information related to
the characteristics and use of new weapons.

At this point we think we are well set for a
significant study that will keep us engaged for the
next several months. If, after reading this message,

relevant subject (weapon expertise, medical, chemical,
physics and so on), and also, information
professionals or other.

Among the mentioned needs, we are now starting to
accept donations to fund missions to Lebanon and
Palestine. We will soon open a bank account so that
those who want, can offer their contributions.

Questa mattina e` partito per il Libano un delegato,
infermiere professionale che ha lavorato per 6 mesi in
Afghanistan con Emergency, con lo scopo di prendere
contatto diretto con diversi medici e scienziati
libanesi, che siamo riuscit* a contattare grazie
all'aiuto di giornalist*, altr* scienziat* di varie
discipline, ONG nazionali, locali (libanesi e
palestinesi) e internazionali e conoscenze dirette.

Per quanto sia al momento prematuro tirare
conclusioni, avendo osservato le evidenze che ci sono
giunte finora, abbiamo il sospetto che siano state
utilizzate alcune armi sperimentali, piu` di una,
all'inizio dell'aggressione. I successivi pesanti
bombardamenti con bombe convenzionali hanno
probabilemte occultato le tracce lasciate da questi
nuovi ordigni, oltre che dirottare la maggiorparte
dell'attenzione internazionale sui crimini di guerra
legati all'assassinio di oltre 1.200 civili libanesi.

Attualmente ci siamo posti tre obiettivi immediati

1.
approfondire quanto piu` possibile alcuni episodi, con
lo scopo di identificare la natura dell'aggressione
che ha portato ai casi di morti e feriti descritti dai
medici.
Il viaggio della settimana prossima servira` a
raccogliere dati su un numero anche ampio di casi, per
poter poi fre una cernita e scegliere quelli su cui
concentrarci (in base alla disponibilita` di
informazioni, materiale, testimoni, feriti
sopravvissuti, e, importantissimo, la disponibilita` e
il desiderio dei medici a lavorare con noi).
Prevediamo poi di approfondire questo lavoro su alcuni
pochi casi anche con successive missioni in Libano e a
Gaza, allo scopo di raccogliere le evidenze
specifiche..
I risultati di questi studi saranno poi utilizzati in
modi diversi: pubblicazioni scientifche, pubblicazioni
attraverso media per il pubblico (che deve essere
informato), e (se del caso) denunce presso gli organi
nazionali e internazionali competenti.

2.
Contemporaneamente stiamo lavorando per preparare un
documento in cui sono descritte le nuove armi, i loro
effetti, e come comportarsi nel disgraziato (ma non
impossibile) caso che vengano utilizzate ancora.

3.
stiamo organizzando un sito web (in italiano ed altre
lingue), che permetta lo scambio di informazioni in
modo rapido ed efficace. Questo risponde alla duplice
necessita` di avere uno strumento per lavorare on line
per il gruppo e di diffondere le informazioni in modo
ampio ed aperto e sarà pianificato per rispondere a
questi obbiettivi

A questo punto riteniamo di essere ben avviati verso
un lavoro importante che ci impegnera` per diversi
mesi. Se, avendo letto questa mail, volete partecipare

competenze scientifiche, mediche e di conoscenza degli
armamenti in molti modi, dal lavoro sul campo a quello
di analisi e a quello di informazione on line e non,

Il gruppo si sta allargando con il sostegno di
consulenti internazionali.

Tra le cose di cui ancora c'e` bisogno, ci sono sempre
fondi (per pagare le missioni e le spese telefoniche,
che non sono poche) per cui apriremo presto un conto
per ricevere contributi di cui manderò notizia in
lista.
