World’s First Arab Tribunal on the War in Iraq
Karen Button
...Similar to former tribunals on Iraq, held in Europe, Asia and the US,
this one has tried its defendants without their presence, not for lack of
invitation, but for lack of response. But what distinguishes this trial
from previous ones about Iraq is its organisation by Arabs and its location
in an Arab nation; Cairo was chosen because it is the headquarters of the
Arab Lawyers Union (ALU), who organised the mock-trial. Of course, the
irony here is! Cairo’s tribunal had far less Iraqi witnesses than former
events. As a Permanent Bureau member of the ALU, Sabah Al-Muktar represents
expatriate Iraqis and is one of the Cairo trial organisers. He’s also on
the Advisory Committee of the Brussels Tribunal and has testified in Tokyo
and Athens as well. "This is an extension to the Brussels Tribunal, a
follow-up," he said. When asked why organisers chose to include Ariel
Sharon and the issue of Occupied Palestine, when others have not, he
explained. "The first reason is that this trial is addressing crimes
committed in this region. The second is we know there are
Israeli/American-coordinated actions in Iraq, which unfortunately we cannot
fully address because these witnesses were denied visas."..

Iraq burns under Arab hypocrisy (updated with new cartoon)
Truth About Iraqis
.... Iraq is invaded, its infrastructure is absolutely destroyed, its women
and children are raped, terrorized and murdered by a US army that makes the
SS look like Santa's elves. The country is robbed of its natural wealth.
It's people are humiliated, shot at, tortured and forgotten. Where is the
Arab valor and honor now? How many Embassies did the valiant Arabs burn
when the horrific tortures of Abu Ghraib came to light? More than 100! ,000
Iraqis mostly MUSLIMS were killed in Iraq and the Arabs did ... nothing.
Yet one stupid cartoon mocks the Prophet Muhammad and all hell breaks
loose. Are not these 100,000 the living embodiement of what the Prophet
Muhammad strove and died for? Are they not the living ummah? Did the
Prophet Muhammad not instil in us the idea of social justice?...

The loonies take over the asylum
Murdoch hack counsels an “unconscionable” war on Iran
Gavin Gatenby
Anyone who doubts the determination of key elements of the US-led
imperialist bloc to wage a 'preemptive’ war against Iran should read the
recent opinion piece by Gerard Baker from The Times (it was reproduced in
The Weekend Australian 28-29 Jan 2006). Not much appears in The Times by
accident, and certainly not a piece of such resounding bellicosity. Until I
read Baker’s article I had been persuaded th! at the Bush government would
not be quite so loony as to launch a war against Iran, for the simple
reason that its puppet Iraqi government is dominated by pro-Iranian
politicians and that it relies heavily (in some areas completely) on the
militias of the Iranian-backed Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution
In Iraq (SCIRI) for recruits for the Iraqi puppet police and army units...

US Attorney General Shows America's Dedication to Freedom and Liberty by
Facilitating Torture (and Now Spying on US Citizens)
American Progress Report
On Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold the first congressional
hearings on President Bush's warrantless domestic spying program. Attorney
General Alberto Gonzales will be the lone witness. If his past statements
are an indication, Gonzales will provide few details about the
controversial program, hiding behind the guise of national security. Yet
even i! f Gonzales continues to refuse to speak forthrightly and honestly
about warrantless domestic spying, senators must at least press him to
respond in detail to the facts and statements already in the public
record...

Tomgram: Bushwhacked in Bushworld
Tom Engelhardt
Just in case you hadn't noticed, we're in a Bushworld too absurd for words.
But that hasn't stopped this administration from yakking its collective
head off Over the last week: The President came out for an ethanol-powered
globe -- that's corn on the cob to you, buddy -- while his Defense
Secretary Don Rumsfeld announced that our poor planet had somehow gotten
more terroristically dangerous since George took the helm. (No fault of
his, natch.) Last Tuesday night, o! f course, the Great Helmsman stood on
the congressional deck of state -- perhaps confusing it with the deck of
the USS Abraham Lincoln (Didn't anyone hear me? Mission accomplished!) --
and declared that we were on nothing less than the "road to victory" in
Iraq. (Unfortunately, the message seems not to have gotten through to
Iraqis lining that road with IEDs, possibly due to power outages in that
country.)...

Pentagon covers up widespread sexual abuse
Kathy Durkin
The Pentagon is hiding a shocking secret: the rampant sexual harassment and
abuse of women soldiers within the ranks of the U.S. military in Iraq. This
sexual violence has even led to deaths, the causes of which have been
deliberately concealed. Col. Janis Karpinski, former commander of Abu
Ghraib prison, charged recently that Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, ex-senior
U.S. military commander in Iraq, ordered cover-ups of some women soldiers’
deaths from dehydratio! n there. These women, Karpinski charged, were
terrified of being sexually assaulted by male soldiers. As a result, they
did not drink sufficient fluids in order to avoid using latrines late at
night...

The March To War ... With Iran?
Rowan Wolf, POAC
If you haven't gotten nervous yet about the next neoconservative Bush
administration target, then you might want to perk your ears. I know that
common sense says that the US is over-committed as it stands; that the push
is to downsize the U.S. force in Iraq. Certainly no one could seriously
propose another "regime change" at this point. Well, the rhetoric is rising
and the target is clearly Iran. Not only is the rhetoric risng, the world
could be looking at a Sprin! g 2006 offensive - perhaps as early as March.
Yes, next month...

This Presentation May Be Too Graphic
Mary Pitt
Is anyone else tired of hearing this crap whenever the "mainstream media"
are talking about the consequences of the War of Choice? The announcement
is made on the television "NEWS" channels every time there is a story about
a bombing incident or a disaster such as the situation in New Orleans after
Katrina.. In fact this warning is usually unnecessary because they will
"fuzz out" any details showing severe wounds or dead bodies. This protects
both those with "queasy ! stomachs" and those who feel that it is their
"patriotic duty" to know what is going on even though they may be repulsed
by actually seeing anything gruesome...

IRAQ: Occupation increasing poverty
Doug Lorimer
The number of Iraqis living below the poverty line has increased since the
US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 to one-fifth of the population,
according to figures released by Iraq’s labour ministry on January 25. "A
study conducted by the ministry in coordination with the International
Monetary Fund and the United Nations Development Program [UNDP] shows that
20% of the population is affected by poverty", Leila Kazem,
director-general of the department of social! affairs at the labour
ministry, told Agence France-Presse. "Some 2 million Iraqi families live
under the poverty line, as defined by international criteria, which is
fixed at one [US] dollar per day per person"...

Numbers
Cindy Sheehan
The now famous black shirt with white lettering that I was wearing on
January 31st to the State of the Union address originally read: 2000 Dead.
How many more? That shirt was made by Veterans for Peace on the occasion of
the 2000th U.S. soldier killed in Iraq. That tragic number was reached on
September 25th, 2005. About four months later, on the morning of January
31st, before my fellow peace activist and partner in patriotic dissent, Ann
Wright, and I set out for our day's adventures, Ann ! put masking tape over
the zeroes in the 2000 and wrote: 242. Thus changing the number to 2242,
which was the upsetting casualty total for that day...

Hillary Clinton and the Neolib Gender Game
Kurt Nimmo
According to CBS, Americans don’t care what gender their neolib rulers are.
"As has been the case for a number of years, nearly all Americans say they
would vote for a woman for president from their own political party if she
were qualified," reports the corporate propaganda division of Westinghouse
(a former death merchant industry). Not unexpectedly, CBS sports an image
of the Grand Madame of Globalism—Hillary Clinton—on the page with the poll
results, thus ! revealing who they imagine the next president should be,
that is if the easily and repeatedly hoodwinked masses decide 2008 is high
tide for a female ruler. No doubt millions of Americans will feel a tad
better—at least in the short term—about taking their marching orders down
the thorny road toward slavery from a woman...

Who Will Save America?
My Epiphany
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
...Other readers write that 9/11 shields Bush from accountability, They
challenge me to explain why three World Trade Center buildings on one day
collapsed into their own footprints at free fall speed, an event outside
the laws of physics except under conditions of controlled demolition. They
insist that there is no stopping war and a police state as long as the
government's story on 9/11 remains unchallenged. They could be right. There
are not many! editors eager for writers to explore the glaring defects of
the 9/11 Commission Report. One would think that if the report could stand
analysis, there would not be a taboo against calling attention to the
inadequacy of its explanations. We know the government lied about Iraqi
WMD, but we believe the government told the truth about 9/11...

GI Special 4B5: " Sometimes We Sham" - February 6, 2006
Thomas F Barton
...The young experts of the CPA live in total fear of the very cities and
people they are charged with governing. They are mocked as "occupodians" by
their own praetorians: the multicultural, working-class GIs from Fresno,
Philly, and the nowhere hamlets of Arkansas who guard the Green Zone
palace. Lacking experience with the real Iraq, these postmodern
colonialists, the ideological anti-Arabists of the American Empire, spin
wildly unhinged! plans and dole out vast sums of unaudited, practically
unmonitored cash to US contractors. Meanwhile, outside the walls one hears
the boom and rumble of IEDs...

De-Constitution of Iraq
Övgü Kalkan, kerkuk.net
The Iraqi Constitution, which is likely to accelerate the
de-constitutioning process of the country through the vital deficiencies it
brings, has to be examined. In this study, the possible negative
implications of the Constitution will be explored at the macro and micro
levels under the federal framework. On the macro level, the main issues of
divergences will be examined from the perspective of three major groups,
where as at the micro level the negative implicati! ons of the Constitution
will be observed from the perspective of minority rights...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 6 February 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board,
the Free Arab Voice
...It has become pretty much a daily occurrence for young Sunni Iraqis to
be arrested by the US-installed security forces, most of whom belong to
Shi'i sectarian militias. Their bodies are usually found several days
later, having been bound, blindfolded, tortured, and then shot to death.
Sunnis have been kidnapped or "arrested" from many areas throughout Baghd!
ad, as well as other cities, by members of the puppet "Interior Ministry
Shock Troops (Maghawir)" and by other puppet government forces. The water
treatment plant in ar-Rustamiyah is a popular place for dumping the bodies
of Sunni victims. So far about 230 bodies of murdered Sunni youths have
been recovered from there. The US-installed regime has, as would be
expected, taken no action to curb the behavior of its "security agencies"...

What's more outrageous? Spying, or invasions?
Eli Stephens, Left I on the News
Many people are up in arms, and certainly rightfully so, that George Bush
and his minions are claiming that the authorization of "force" passed by
the Congress in the aftermath of 9/11 is what authorizes the use of
warrantless domestic spying, on the grounds that after all, any "war"
includes spying on your enemies. Now let's review exactly what that bill
authorized: That the President is authorized to use all necessary and
appropr! iate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he
determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks
that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or
persons. But here's the thing. On March 21, 2003, Bush cited that same
statute in justifiying the invasion of Iraq...

Danish paper rejected Jesus cartoons
Gwladys Fouché
Jyllands-Posten, the Danish newspaper that first published the cartoons of
the prophet Muhammad that have caused a storm of protest throughout the
Islamic world, refused to run drawings lampooning Jesus Christ, it has
emerged today. The Danish daily turned down the cartoons of Christ three
years ago, on the grounds that they could be offensive to readers and were
not funny. In April 2003, Danish illustrator Christoffer Zieler submitted a
series of unsolicited ca! rtoons dealing with the resurrection of Christ to
Jyllands-Posten...

leaders have fixed the proceedings and urging court-appointed defense
lawyers to quit. The comments came in an emotional statement issued by the
Amman-based defense team and addressed to Saddam's sympathizers in Iraq...
